i'm in the same boat and slightly baffled that something as sophisticated as houdini lacks something so basic. this is basically a showstopper for any larger scenes.
maya for example has a text field in the upper right corner where i can enter whatever name i want and after hitting enter all matching objects are selected. the network view has “find node” but the crucial difference is that it's not recursive so pretty much useless.
so what's the recommended way of selecting objects recursively? hscript? something else?

this is a bit embarrassing but how can i turn off these tooltips in 15.5?
it is so annoying. i can hardly move the mouse anywhere without getting one. i didn't have these in older versions but i don't remember whether i turned them off or whether it was the default.
i did of course go through the prefs but nothing i did helped. i even been through houdini.pref but whatever i thought of could be the one didn't help either.
for the record i know that according to the docs it should be under the edit menu but it's not there. in fact compared to the included docs other entries are missing from the edit menu as well.

To me (and others I’ve talked to) the SideFX site now looks like all the other technical product websites and that’s not necessarily a good thing to me. Heavy on images and wasted space, low on relevant information. The previous main page provided a lot of more direct information with regards to customer stories and company news as well as upcoming training (when it existed) or other events. Now you’re presented with scrolling series of massive and scrolling images that are short on useful information. There is a single item visible for customer stories, news and tutorials whereas previously you were presented with a lot more.that nails it perfectly! and sadly goes for most sites these days. even worse, the new site not only got absolutely nothing individual but also copied all the problems that such sites have, too. like for example completely unnecessary and way too much use of js. i can't even see the login form without js, wtf?
the design however is really poor. actually, can it even be called “design”? especially for one of the biggest shots in the gfx industry the non existant level of creativity is a joke.
i'd scrap the whole thing, sit down and think of what actually makes sense and then come up with a worthy representation of one of the oldest and most advanced gfx companies in the industry
edit: and in favor of the users' privacy whatever you get from jquery.com should be hosted locally.

hello,
thanks but i know that.
the problem is not the general amount of ram but it eats more and more ram even if all
stuff must be loaded.
not so with single or dual machines but on the big one (16cpu).

hello,
everytime i use mantra over network with a big parallel machine it constantly eats more and
more ram until the machine has nothing left. after that it begins eating the swap…
i use: mantra -H bigone, bigone, bigone, bigone… dependent on the machine's cpu number.
happens with 5.5 and current…
ideas?
thanks

you'll find no advantage in running Houdini irix on an out dated machine.
Buy even a cheap PC these days and your gonna do better.
no way!!!
x86 sucks all the time
Technical Discussion » remote render win2k crash

hello,
everytime when i try to use the win2k houdini for remote rendering from an octane i get
“Warning: remote render exited unexpectedly”
the other side (hserver -d) shows:
nobody is listening on the other end?
i tried nearly every option from the hserver.ini in /winnt/system32. the hserver loads the options correctly but it doesn't help.
got no problems with irix.
redhat 7.2 also does the job but newer versions like mandrake 9.1 show the same.
happens with all versions i tried (5.5.30-266) !!
i don't have one of those personal firewalls or similar running…
any ideas?
thanks in advance

Technical Discussion » Image format for CompositeROP is missing. Only Houdini PIC.

DavidRindner
In MantraROP there are options to export in JPEG, TIGG, TGA and other format. Yet in ComposiveV2ROP (5.5.208) only Houdini PIC is suppourted. Problem is that After Effects does not read that format. It suppourts Softimage PIC and SGI formats but does not recognise Houdini PIC. Is the limiting of compositing export to Houdini format, endemic to Apprentice, or is it same in Halo and Master.
Dave Rindner
comp v2 still lacks a good export node.
you can use iconvert from the houdini bin folder to get the format you prefer.
