We had a (maybe?) similar problem, that when sometimes just entering a material library lop with some materialx and karma nodes inside, Houdini would crash and also just before crashing one could see “evaluating python” in the info bar.
It didn’t happen on every workstation though and was with houdini 19.0 on Windows.
If I remember correctly the problem stopped when we removed an external python installation from the windows user directory.
Cheers

Hit "d" when you're mouse is over the viewport to open the Display Options.
Then under the "Camera" tab you can set the View Mask Opacity.

Do you mean how fast the smoke/density fades away? You can control this through the "Dissipation"-setting.
Hope that helps.

Solaris and Karma » Dome Light Texture Format Options not working

Hey everybody,
while trying to transfer old render setups, I realized the different format options for the Texture Map (Mirrored Ball/Lat-Long/ Angular/Cube Map) in the Dome Light LOP aren't changing the way the map is interpreted. It looks the same, no matter the chosen option, even after a render restart.
Can anybody confirm this?
I'm working with Houdini 19.0.531 on Windows 10 and render with Karma and Redshift. But the behaviour is the same with H18.5.596.
Cheers,
Michael

PDG/TOPs » How to compute velocities when reading 'pdg_input'

Hey guys,
I'm came across a limitation (I think) when I'm trying to compute velocities with the trail sop, while I read my input files via the ‘@pdg_input’ variable.
I guess it makes sense, that while cooking a pdg network and using the trail sop, pdg doesn't necessarily know, what the frame before or after is (except when cooking simulations with the ‘all frames in one batch’ option).
So my question is, how (or if at all) I can utilize the trail sop when working with @pdg_input?
Please find attached a simple setup that illustrates the “problem”.
Cheers,
Michael

PDG/TOPs » Evaluate pdg-attributes in expressions with python script top fails

Hey guys,
via a Python Script TOP I'm trying to query and evaluate several attributes on “normal”/non pdg-nodes that use pdg-attributes.
But when doing this with classic python hou module functions (Node.Parm.eval() etc.) it seems, the attribute values can't be evaluated.
Example:
Create Wedged Attributes in TOP Net
Reference them with @attribname on a Parameter of a classic Houdini Network Node (e.g.: an Outputpath that has the wegded values in it)
Try to grab the current value (per Work Item) of the Parameter with a Python Script TOP.
In most cases it returns nothing or 0.0 etc. depending on the Data Type.
Please find attached a simple mock up of my setup.
I know how to reference parameter values on current pdg node withetc.. But what would be the right way to reference parameters containing expressions from external Nodes?
Cheers, Michael

What happens if you reverse just the “flipped” line prior to skinning wiht a Reverse SOP?
Also, do you have a Hip File of your setup? Might help as well to check that out.

What works however, is when you create your Color and Toggle Parameters via Edit Parameter Interface and then use Expressions to drive the values inside the VOPnet. Of course this is not as convenient

Hey Emil,
I can confirm the problem in your scene as well. I then tried rebuilding it from scratch in h17 and h16.5 and it also didn't work.
I also rebuild the functionality in a VOP-SOP and to my surprise it works there as expected. So it seems to be a bug relatet to VOP-Parameters in the /mat conext.
You should contact support or log an RFE for that, I think.
Best, gotchee

Hey there again,
I just tried adding the functionality of disabling and hiding a parameter in H17.
Works here…see attached hip-file.

Try adding spaces after the first and before last brace.
{ condition == 0 }
I think it also says so in the documentation :-)

Technical Discussion » Transfer color to texture?
- gotchee

Hey there,
Independtly from how you put the colors on the mesh, you first need some proper, non-overlapping UVs. After that you could use the “bake texture rop”.
What do you mean with “colors from the mesh”?
Was there already color information on the imported geometry?
If so, you could simply try “Attribute transfer SOP” to transfer color from the imported geo to the clean one.
Hope that helps,
Cheers

The only slightly more convienient way I can think of is when you have the “edit parameter interface”-window open, you can drag an drop your target parameters directly in the middle column and then it’s directly linked, named and of the right type.
Hope this helps…but I would also like it to be even more convienient :-)

When you create a digital asset, look for the “node tab” in the “type properties”.
There you can define you subnet as a dive target and make it editable
