finally after at least ten years and a over heating graphics card that was the only one incompatible with houdini (!) i am getting a new computer, just wanted to run some specs past and see if the graphics card is actually usuable.
i am on a strict budget, so i have already spent to the limit, if i need any extra, or you suggest a different card it needs to be in the same price range. thanks guys:
3XS OEM * 4GB PNY NVIDIA QUADRO P1000 (4x MDP to DP)
AMD 16 Core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Unlocked CPU/Processor
ASUS AMD Threadripper PRIME X399 A TR4 E-ATX Motherboard

I'm thinking of getting an Bulldozer proc machine, is there a ‘perfect’ graphics card for Houdini - I got a radeon in my current machine - the only card not approved for houdini - don't want to do that again. Price around $250-$500

I've been Houdini since it was prisms action 1.0 - it has it's short-comings, I'm constantly finding bevels and cookie problems, which should be pretty basic by now, and although there is a plethora of new SOPs, unless you know how to string them together… but I remember the days when Greg Hermanovic would come and install a new version and be writing code at my desk to make sure it did what we needed. You don't get many CEO's doing that.

I agree with RudiNieuwenhuis post, I have ATI firepro v7800 card and it's totally useless, you can't select points without the clip plane jumpig all over or the screen freezing, and the fix for this glitch leaves you without textures.
It states on the ATI site that this is one of the few cards that doesn't support Houdini (find out AFTER I buy it) so best to check compatibility - it's not really their fault.

I expect there is a way, but I don't know it and can't work it out.
I have a houdini with loads of materials, many of which aren't being used, is there a similar thing to light linker that tells you which material is being used?
Thanks

It's been there for about two weeks now, computer restarted many times as well as houdini, it's just weird. I use spy to hunt down viruses and malware (ocassionally!) as it's the ONLY reliable navigator that shows ALL files in ALL folders, I thought maybe it was linked to this in some way.

Not very important, but got me wondering.
I created a shortcut to a project, put it on my desktop, kept forgetting to use it, deleted it, but it still shows up in the houdini file chooser…..
Is the link gone, still there, or is this a quirk of history in the h file chooser?

i've had to animate a train recently. i looked at all the procedural methods of road building, but being a bear of small brain i had to come up with a ‘traditional’ houdini method of getting a train to run on tracks.
i draw a curve, polyspline it, even lengths. make it into a creep path. run another, short, line along it, deleting all but the end points. I copy the train bogies to these points, so the bogies follow the railway lines, which lie in a section of track/landscape, copied and creep'd along the same path. i scale the ‘bogie’ line (which is just two points, so it scales along its axis), make IT into a creep path (resample for more points), scale it so I get some overhang on the bogies, then creep the carriage of the train into this box, making sure it's the original proportions, likewise the engine, creep'd a bit further along. this way the all the wheels run along the tracks, and the engine and carriages looked parented to TWO bogies.
is there an easier way? it looks perfect for my application, but if it were film fx?

Technical Discussion » exporting fbx

I've been having problems exporting fbx. Is it true that you have to have the thumb slider at frame 1 ?
Do you have to have camera and geometry nodes displayed on ?
Do you have to quit out and reload houdini file each time - I've been getting empty scenes if I don't.
I've had it work, seem to do the same things again, and it not work, how buggy is it? Thanks.
MAX compatibilty rather than maya.
And I've been setting up bundles rather than the default /obj, or picking particular objects, does this make a difference. Thanks.

Nice easy technique, but I have trees and concrete balls (!) in my scene, is there a shader than can handle this? Thanks.

The font sop doesn't seem to understand russian, I get question marks, is it possible to get the font to recognise this? At the moment I'm doing a trace, but it's not satisfactory. Thanks.
Technical Discussion » .osm data import to houdini

I've been trying to import data from .osm (open source maps) and found a couple of converters that DON'T work, but one way round this is to export .xml data, does anyone know anything about getting .osm to .xml, converting .xml to something houdini can understand? Thanks.

I know open source map data can be imported into houdini to produce ‘cities’ but try as I might I haven't figured it out, I don't want to buy the tutorial from cmivfx particularly - just to find it doesn't do what I want - si if anyone knows how to convert open source map files (.osm) into something houdini can understand I'd be eternally grateful.

I've put this in another topic, but sadly no replies. I've just discovered my brand new 6 core computer with a firepro 7800 card has issues with houdini - like I can't use the edit sop, or if I change the ogl setting I can use it but not see textures (sigh). Is the quadro 4000 PC compatible (i'd guess yes) and a ball-park price as I want to replace this ATI card….ta

it seems ati graphics cards have inherent issues with ogl in houdini (is this right?) so what would be the perfect graphics card for $650.00 or less? (you'd think at this price ANY card would do the job).

I've trawled the web a bit more and found that ati cards seem to love this problem. I found a fix but I swap being able to use the edit sop for texture display problems……

I thought this would be easy converting .osm to .obj, I found the open street map pages and downloaded the .osm format file, but although I'd gotten the impression it would be straightforward it appears it's not. Anyone know where I can get something that will take .osm data and convert it into .obj (or houdini friendly format) preferably in separate layers (roads, buildings etc)? Much appreciated.
I can't afford the ‘building cities’ tutorial (weeps).
