HI Guys, i have a tops setup.. and i am trying to figure out, how, when cooking the node, i can disable my packages, therefore, dramatically reducing the startup time of the pdg tasks.
In the scheduler, i can add an env variable and i set HOUDINI_PACKAGE_SKIP = 1, but the packages still get loaded. I also tried by adding an environmentedit node, and setting the same variable there, but again, the packages get loaded.
It seems that should be something thats possible to set the environment for the tasks. The only workaround i found is to literally remove all the package json's from the folder.. then it worked as desired.
Any idea on how to get it working via the environment variable ?. I dont want to set it prior to starting houdini, as i need the packages when working, but some of the top tasks, they really dont need it.

It's machine specific? strange
during the investigational stage, i tested linux/windows… with quite a few people.. always 3 sec.. (like i said you could just use a box, its almost irrelevant of the geo)..
but on one of the devs's linux box.. 0.3 sec…. we did a lot of testing, and since it was added as actual bug, I am hopeful.

its not a matter of translation, there's something wrong in the obj loader.. (its been confirmed as a bug).. a file (like i said, 20k prims, but you could take anything (make a cube, export it as obj, and try the import).. it will take 3 sec to load… (off of an ssd)
one one of the devs's machines.. 0.3 seconds.. (which is expected, and which is what it loads like in other apps).. like i said.. its been confirmed and acknowledged, just hope it could get some love soon as it would really majorly help out here….
edit: (we dont have the luxury to request other formats, its what the delivery is, so stuck with .obj as incoming format)

Is there any chance we could get some attention to this? I wanted to bring it up again just to make sure it didnt fall through the cracks.
I am currently working with 10000's of .obj files (obj sequences) and the import times are so slow, that I might have to explore other avenue's. The bug was confirmed as (ID# 105211). I am trying to convert them to .bgeo files, but yeah… 3 seconds to load a 20k file is just making it completely prohibitive.
Thanks,
Oliver

Hi Everyone,
I've been developing some tools primarily aimed at improving workflows in an efficient manner. ODTools for Houdini is an ever growing collection of tools/HDAs that I have been working and improving on for a while in the shadows, spreading via word of mouth, but I feel its time to let people know about them officially.
Some of the highlights of the tools are as follows (there's currently about 70 tools and more being added all the time, so I am just listing some of them and you can look up a full list on the product page: OD Tools for Houdini [origamidigital.com]:
- Drag and Drop support Video Overview [vimeo.com] (older video, much improved now but shows the basics)
- Obj to Lops - provides a quick way to get obj level nodes into Solaris. Either via sop/scene import or by creating .usd files and linking those on the fly. Just select/multiselect your nodes and let it go.
- Snippet Manager Video Overview [vimeo.com] - A simple way to manage your wrangles and other data.
- Asset Library Manager - Manage Your Texture/Object/HDA/Node Libraries, automatic thumbnail creation, etc
- TheGrove 3D Import - allows you to quickly import trees generated by the Blender plugin
- Octane QuickSetup / Quick Material. Video Overview 1 [vimeo.com] Video Overview 2 [vimeo.com] - a very fast and efficient way to work with octane.
- Viewport Material Picker Video Overview [vimeo.com] - Lets you click on anything in the viewport, and opens up a floating window to the underlying material.
- Project Selector Video Overview [vimeo.com] - A very simple pipeline tool to help people get organized, especially when you work together remotely with others.
- Light Placer Video Overview [vimeo.com] - allows you to quickly create lights based on reflection/diffuse angle on an object in the viewport
- Lots of tools, dealing with Materials, their setup, their conversion (Octane, Redshift, 3Delight, Renderman, VRay and Arnold) supported, some of them highlighted here six additions [vimeo.com]
- Reference Manager - gives you a reference to all external files, lets you localize them and update.
And many more, please refer to the product page. As I am updating, I'll post more videos here.
One of the use cases for common issues solved by these tools can be found here:
Object Library to HDA - Part 1 [vimeo.com]
Object Library to HDA - Part 2 [vimeo.com]
Object Library to HDA - Part 3 [vimeo.com]
Lastly, Thanks to all the SideFX people, their support team, their developers, the SideFX Labs team, their incredibly quick bug fixes and just, for creating the most awesome package I have used in my career.
Also a continued thanks to all the customers supporting ODTools for Houdini, making suggestions, coming up with sometimes crazy stuff but always being awesome.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy!

Technical Discussion » Hip file drag and drop onto gui not working

I made something similar as part of ODTools…
@alexwheezy your script (if it works in 17.5 and not 18) just needs a minor addition to it.
What H18 sees when a file is dropped unfortunately got changed (it now outputs a URL versus just the filestring like it did in H17.5.
I filed a bug report for that too, as in 17.5, it was possible to drop multiple files, and in H18, only a single file is now possible..
To make your script work in H18, you simply have to unquote the file variable: unquote(urlparse(file).path)

The one thing i noticed (windows, but might apply to linux as well) is that if you are using packages, Arnold needs to be last in the directory, so call it zarnold.json instead of arnold.json. After I made those adjustments the windows version worked fine.

I just packaged everything up, and before sending, i tested it again. and this time, everything worked fine. (i had put everything into the $HIP folder.. the images, the hda and output dir also.
I wonder if it has something to do with the hda being in the documents folder normally, versus in the $hip folder that i created for sending everything. I will check this some more as I dont want to waste your time.

This looks to be an issue within Houdini itself. Your HDA appears to be triggering some functionality within Houdini that is crashing. This is probably not to do with PDG itself, but rather some other bits of Houdini functionality. If you could please attach the HDA and the data involved, we could track it a bit further to see exactly what is crashing.
ahh. great.. thanks for letting me know.. I'll file a proper report with everything attached !.

This is a very simple hda, but fails on writing geometry. It seems that as soon as i add `@pdg_index` to the filename, it can not cook anymore.
Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong ?

Technical Discussion » Truck with Trailer Movement Setup.

Hi Guys, I have been trying for a while now to figure out how to do a proper Trailer movement when its attached to a truck. The following link has a mp4 describing the issues, as well as my setup file. Since I am still a bit new to Houdini, I am quite frankly stumped and would appreciate any help. I've searched around and couldnt find anything similar, even though to me, it seems like such a basic thing that should be easily possible. I imagine its just a matter of knowing how. There might also be a bug with chops when loading a scene, and if anyone could confirm, I'll submit that.
