it appears it is slow overall…
I brought in the geometry with no animation, it was a little heavy…14,000 poly's…I plugged in a poly reduce node and reduced it to about 2000 poly's…
Still takes forever to cook…..
Is there a better way to emit fluid then using the SDF? as thats what seems to take so long cooking.
I am still a houdini newb, but I assume the SDF is generating a volume….but all i really need is particles emitting from the surface. Maybe the SDF is overkill?
The problem is, loosing the network generated from the shelf tools if I have to do it manually

I am importing an alembic animated character and wanted to emit fluid from the character.
The process is insanely slow….it cooks for at least 10 minutes per frame on a very low rez sim with a medium rez object (maybe 2000 poly's)
playing around with the alembic file, I see Houdini can generate an SDF from the alembic file in near realtime so I am wondering…what is taking so long to cook in this sim…is alembic perhaps not the best format? I have tried importing it on the alembic node as houdini geometry, but it didnt seem to help.
This is using the shelf tool for emit from object…which is great, but hard to diagnose the problem in the network when you are a beginner

Technical Discussion » How to use realflow mesh export SOP

I am trying to import Houdini generated fluid meshes into Lightwave…
The best method I can tell is the Realflow plugins (LW does not accept the generated alembic files)
What I have tried so far, is creating a RF Mesh Exporter ROP….and pointing to the particle fluid surface SOP node. Inside the particle fluid surface node only the convert to setting of surface polygons seems to somewhat work. Compressed fluid Surfaces messes up triangulation (points are in the right place but polygons are a mess) and Surface VDB exports nothing…
Also I have had better success with transfer attributes unchecked.
Inside LW, I can kinda get it to work….usually have to import twice and it will eventually crash after 10 seconds of scrubbing citing ‘RF importer format error’
This RF mesh export is totally undocumented….I have found some plugin docs for an older version that did not even have the RF mesh exporter.
So my question is…does anyone know how this is supposed to work?
I have kinda got it figured with very limited Houdini knowledge…but I dont know if this was even designed for native Houdini fluids….or if this was meant to export RF meshes created with the RF mesher plugin SOP's in houdini.

Here is the hip file….
I didnt include the GEO as it is about 175 MB….but shouldnt have anything to do with the problem (i think)

Just playing with the autorig…following along with both DT and CMI tutorials….
In the animation rig…my spine controls are all disappearing
I just redid my rig, twice to see if it is something I missed.
I have found the level of detail control settings and adjusted them for the spine as well as the scale and color of the spine controls….but no matter what, the only visible control is the COG pivot.
All of the hip, lower, back and chest controls are missing.
I have tried refreshing imports in the parameter controls, and dug through the network as best I could…..but that's as deep as I can go

i can't seem to drag and drop throughout the houdini interface
when i am in the material pallette i cannot drag and drop from the galleries into the shop context….
i cannot drag and drop materials onto objects…
and i cannot drag and drop parameters into expressions or other channels
something i'm missing here? some environment variable I have to enable?
Nvidia 470 on win 7 64 bit Intel I7
thanks

what is the correct context to use this in then….
i'm following along with magic of houdini, which of course is H8
i've entered this expression in the textport and Hscript textport both with the same results….but in the book that's what he directs you to do to test the expression
in the book he has you preceed the expression by the echo command
which i do
/obj/soccerball -> echo ‘prim(“./measureArea”, 8, “area”, 0)’
and houdini returns
prim(“./measureArea”, 8, “area”, 0)
/obj/soccerball ->
but in the book the echo command returns the attribute number itself
when i do it it dosn't seem to evaluate the expression

i'm not actually trying to use parmlist I was just experimenting
what i am trying to do is use prim….
which i have searched out in the help and found an expression “prims”
let me paste what i typed
/obj/soccerball -> prim(“./measureArea”, 8, “area”, 0)
Unknown command: prim
/obj/soccerball -> exhelp prim
float prim (string, float, string, float)
usage
prim(<<SOP>>, <<prim_num>>, <<attrib_name>>, <<attrib_index>>)
This function can be used to get information about a specified
primitive. When given the “P” or “Pw” attribute, the centroid of the
primitive will be returned.
examples
prim(“/obj/geo1/facet1”, 3, “P”, 0)
Evaluates the X component of the centroid of primitive 3 in the
sop specified.
prim(“/obj/geo1/facet1”, 3, “Cd”, 1)
Evaluate the green color of the “Cd” attribute of primitive 3.

the unknown command thing is throwing me

trying to follow along with some tutorials….
i can type help for command example
exhelp prim
and it will display the help for the command
but when i type it in it is coded red and says
unknown command prim
when i start typing “prim” the popup for commands starting with “P” appears but prim or prims is not on the list
I tried this with other commands that are on the list such as “parmlist”
and when i type
exhelp parmlist
it returns
No installed expressions match parmlist
to me it seems it isn't finding installed expressions….is it possible that it is referencing an improper file location for expressions?

on second thought…..
selecting delete from the viewport will only give me the blast node…
whereas selecting delete from the network editor gives me the delete node..
try it
the blast node does work fine….but i specifically wanted the delete node for some of the options it has…and even if i select it in the viewport it only gives me the blast node??

having trouble with slections and tools not on the shelf
for instance if i wanted to do a delete(not a blast) i would select a couple of polygons then right-click on my last node and select delete….this would not delete anything…
so if i right-click and selected delete…then selected the polygons after…same result.
by manually entering the polygon numbers in the group parameter I could then delete the polygons
same thing with soft-transform…no matter what i have selected it seems to apply the soft transform to the entire object.
is this something i'm doing wrong….
i have no trouble with any tool on the shelf….am i selecting these things wrong?

these people would print them themselves and do
The manual does not have to increase the price….if people want it they pay for it.
Lightwave has about a 1000 page manual that you pay extra for if you want it…..which I did…
And they are identical to there help files….and they make money selling the manuals.
This thread is for people who are pushing for houdini to make it available….if you don't like it don't buy it.
It's like saying “Hey SideFx, please discontinue copy stamping and focus on cooler things….cause I never use it”
People on this thread are asking for a manual……that I would gladly pay seperately for.
It's not a big issue…ya a little more than an hour….but not of any programmers time!!
The help files are already written……

Please SESI, do NOT spend time printing manuals…use that time to develop more fancy stuff
the help files are already written….not a lot more to do
i don't think they would actually print them on site….
probably take a secretary 1 hour to run to office depot or some other print shop
some people actually like printed manuals….i read them in bed
