I was trying to coordinate with SideFX in doing something like a 200 or 300 level bootcamp class (5 days or so) like they have for the Introductory Bootcamp.
I would still be interested in this if other people are and if SideFX would be willing.

number one… I'm not big on people whining about things being hard.
If it is too hard… move on.
- with great freedom (or power) comes great responsibility
Houdini gives you the tools to make a helix. You could even create a helix tool of your own, pretty easily. You could post that to the exchange to prevent further concerns about houdini being too hard.
- If everyone could make the effect at the press of a button, it would cease to be a “special” effect.
I hope houdini doesn''t bend to the will of button click…
I'm still very much new to houdini- Still soooo much to learn.
But it is a challenge that I seek with the reward of being able to really control and harness what I am after.
Thanks SESI.

Houdini Lounge » could or did mac update to 10.5.6 kill houdini?

to see whether it was a mac thing or not.. I ventured down a dark road last night and made my MBP a dual boot system and installed Ubuntu.
A few very quick trials and it appears to be working much better in the linux environment. I'll try and do a bit more testing today.
I would love to go back to a single environment.

very simple…
added a grid object. go to -> Create Particle tab.
With the grid object selected click on Source from Geometry.
Application exits with “fatal error”
Add'l update.
Tried to add a POPnetwork and crashed with fatal error.
Steps:
added sphere.
added transform node
added keys at frame 1 and 100
Added POPnetwork node
double-clicked to go inside and crash
Add'l side note. I let the software update run on this machine (only).
OS X = 10.5.6
I'm thinking that may have broken something.

follow up question…..
does anyone think that creating and working in a linux partition on the macBookPro would add any stability or performance?
if this is a possibility..
I may do this in the near future…

system specs:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version: 1.28f1
I'll even attach the crash_log
Any help would be appreciated.

OK…
got it all sorted!
minor tweak to the AnimationColors file and then I reset all the interface settings to the defaults in the Edit>color settings>user interface.
I can now see splines and they are colored properly and so far things are working well. Previously, I had downloaded and installed one of the color “mods” (JC's Dark).
Thanks everyone for all the help, patience and suggestions.

ah… just checked the first link….
now I get the joke
DaJuice-
I'll look at that a bit more diligently. I peeked at it last night, but did not see anything that I though I was looking for. And actually, in any of the other “skins” that I've loooked at, none of them have changed the background color of the channel editor.

OK.. I started digging through the .hcs files. Primarily looking at the UIPro.hcs file. I couldn't find anything that looked like it defined the background for the channel editor. I saw a bunch of lines for the dopesheet, but that's not what I was looking for.
I'm attaching an image of what my channel editor looks like. This could simply be some lack of knowledge, as I'm new to houdini
And for reference the machine I'm on now is:
mac book pro (purchased summer 2008)
4Gb ram
2.6 GHz intel core2 duo
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (512 MB)

OK… besides downloading a different color setup
is there a file to tweak all the bits of the interface.
The reason I ask is that I have an interface bug that I'm trying to work around.
I'm running the latest Apprentice on a mac and when I go to the channel editor I cannont see the animation curve, however I can see something moving over one of the dashed lines when I move a curve handle. It almost appears as if I have a black animation curve over a black background.
I would love to be able to see my curves in the channel editor.
