Neil78 or any other savy Mint users
– I am super newbie Linux person and had troubles getting apprentice running on Mint (all issues with me nothing with apprentce or mint). I finally worked that out and have Houidini apprentice running but now the whole driver thing.
I tried to get the latest nvida drivers for my geoforcce 650gtx and install them –following a bunch of suggestions found on the web and well ——-have not been able to figure this one out yet. And without latest drivers Houdini and well lots of things are going to not work well at all.
So does anyone have a link or notes to go from downloading the drivers which I think are Bin files ? (guessing) to actually getting the drivers installed.
A couple of times I think I got as far as aggreeing to terms by NVIDIA and then it was installing and it stopped saying I was running a x server and could not proceed. So I then tried to research all that –and still have yet to figure it out.
This is my first adventures with Linux –and if I could get my driver issuer figured out —I have to say —-Linux Mint is pretty darn nice indeed.

I am sure Robert might have his hands full with somethings besides our Houdini gear needs…….but hopefully its still on the radar of things to work on and get out.
So I wonder —will I actually learn faster wearing a Houdini tee-shirt? Probably not but I will think I am.

So Garman added times to all the videos and I did a quick add and It comes in like over 22 hours worth of videos.
Now I will say this –the videos are of a slightly casual and relaxed flow as if Garman was sitting next to you showing or teaching you as he went along. And even sometimes “surprsing” himself when something might not work as he thought it would. Some people do not like that style but I seem to remember things like that even more . It presents a relaxed feeling condusive to learning IMHO.
So I happen to enjoy that style as opposed to the very edited super fast tutorials that you have to stop every 5 seconds to keep up. I have been going pretty slow through them so far but — I feel I am finally learning things the right way.
Will add some more thoughts as I get through some more videos.

That sounds great Robert—– I think this is going to be a very good initiative . I mean you will get all kinds of free advertisement all over the place —and we get a chance to sport some gear that says something about what we think is a rather special tool and company.

Robert that price seems fine to me as well…..and I would definitely pick up some.
I suppose you have looked at Cafepress –since they are one of the bigger folks in that business. Their corporate hq is in my town Louisville–not that I have any connection to them but I know they can provide a “shop” of sorts.
Anyhow —–I think you guys should move forward on this —-for a host of good reasons !!

Well —trying to get more an official gear program going out from SESI more than just making my own……Copyrights are important to everyone and do not wish to even in a simple personal fashion intrude on theirs.

I am just saying —we all wear tshirts with all kinds of nonsense on it. Proudly wearing some houdini gear seems like such a cool thing to do.
And hey –its free advertising for Side Effects as we walk about the earth. Of course a lot of us may be hold up in some cave trying to create something cool . Smiles .

Yes —I mean this company and software is too cool not to have any gear for sale.
I would like to see Side Effects or Houdini tee shirts or hoodies for sale……don't you ?

Garman is not exagerating when he says “extensive”—Smiles.
I just purchased the non support training and there are currently over 140 videos ….There is also a 100 page companion pdf “book” that is used with the videos —-
I am just starting with this training but a casual look at the content tells me I made a good choice here. And —–what I loved so far –right up front Garman closed the shelf tools window….that alone made me smile and I knew this is just what I needed.
I had kind of leaned a lot of things shelf tool wise first , –well , thats cool but you never know what you are really doing. What's really going on ? I think this might be the just what I need. So its back to beginning but I have never been more excited to start over knowing Im learning things from someone who really knows his stuff.
I will post some more thoughts as I get along more with these —but I am a happy customer right now for sure !

after you agree to agreements get an error regarding the ver 2 key.
I can open the application —and do things but cannot then render.

I just wanted to thank all the folks at Side Effects who have been supporting and making all the new training on the web site in the last year. Big applause for Ari Danesh but others as well deserve kudos. It obviously has the attention of the higher ups and its been such a great help.
And the fact that SES has the Apprentice version deserves special thanks as well.
Its great to see SES really working hard on helping folks get into Houdini. And I think its a great master plan in getting Houdini out there in more places and more studios etc. in the future.
So again —THANKS.

I see in the announcement that indeed the Apprentice versions can author to the Orbolt site but are they limited to making things free – so as to keep to the terms your Apprentice License?
Or is there a special rule allowing sales of assets on orbolt made with Apprentice?

So I got this really intriguing email about a sale and was wondering which videos folks liked best?
It looks like some maybe be a little dated and some maybe a little to advanced –I would definitely say I am not advanced by any means.
A few that catch my eye —The procedural building making, The L Syetems, The shading and rendering one.
thanks,
Rich

Ok, I thought specifically this gpu might be good for pyro simulations and generally nice viewport manipulations as long as the it behaved nicely of which I know there are no guarantees with houdini and gaming cards.

Was wondering if anyone has bought one of these to use in Houdini—-looks like a great non-production GPU for Houdini.
But knowing how Houdini is focused with workstation cards was wondering if anyhow has took the plunge with this card and could talk about how it worked?
At a little under 500 US dollars here in states–its not exactly cheap. So this would help a lot of folks who had similar thoughts.
