Has anyone who frequently works in Houdini use their work in Unity? If so Id like to know how. Any what is good or bad about the Unity+Houdini workflow.

Im looking to create this space scene seen here:

Now I know its gonna take some work and learning, but I dont know where to start in Houdini.Can some one point me in a good direction with tutorials, or which steps Im going to have to take to get to that point. I dont expect it to be easy, I just need to know what direction I need to head.

I don't really use it that much yet, I just started learning it. But so far I am sold and want to continue using it more. I don't really know z-brush that well, but from the people that I have spoken to that have used both I've had a lot of people recommend 3-D coat over z-brush. I just like how intuitive, simple and fast it is.
Awesome, Im gonna try it. How experienced are you with Houdini? Im having a tough time try to tackle what I should learn first. So much, I just dont understand.

I'm not sure what else you are doing other than organic modeling and texturing. Can you do it in Houdini - yes absolutely. Is it better than Maya et al. depends on what you are doing what you are used to and how often you are doing it. The great thing with Houdini is that you can create some pretty wicked custom tools if you are doing similar operations over and over again.
Just out of curiosity have you heard of 3d-coat? Have you compared that to z-brush and what do you think? Their voxel based sculpting/additive tools are pretty awesome/quick for modeling organic models - and can be brought back and forth from Houdini (or any package) pretty easily.
Never heard of 3d-coat. But I went to the site, and I have to say I am very interested now. How often do you use it? How much of it do you know, in comparison to Zbrush? Do you have any samples of what youve done with it?

Yeah, I think thats what im trying to get past. I dont want to have to resort to maya or max because they are better at it. Well I guess, my questions is, why are they better? What is it Houdini is lacking in that field which makes it not as pleasing. My desire to to be strictly Houdini, I just need to know why I cant. Of course anyone can say, “do what you like” or “you can do anything”, but I want a more realistic understanding of its drawbacks.

Hey there,
if you just want to compare ZBrush with Houdini, it has so much more to offer being a modeling/sculpting software like being able to paint fine details into your characters/creatures. You get so much more control being able to use the tablet too, i also believe Ptex was integrated into Houdini because they know artist want to import their models from other packages (ZBrush. 3DCoat etc).
I've seen organic models done completely in Houdini, so it's not impossible. Maybe someone specialized in modeling will come along and point out key differences?

This actually does help. It lets me know that some one out there can do it. I would love to just do a houdini + ZB workflow. Is there anything wrong with Houdini modeling? Why isnt it up there with the others?

I know this is counter productive. But I usually do my modeling with max or maya / ZB.
But I want to eliminate the hassle of using so many softwares. I was thinking of making Houdini my main source of everything + ZB.
Can you guys tell me why I shouldnt character/organic model in Houdini if I already know Maya and Max workflows?

rigging and anim are very strong particularly for more esoteric types of rigging and animation tasks (like when there are lots of character driven fx)
If you dont mind can you expand on what type of projects would this work for? So that when the time comes Ill understand the strengths for it.

I know that choosing a good compositing and motion tracking software is a preference issue. But I have to ask you guys. When using Houdini, what software have you found works really well for Tracking and Compositing?
Im used to AE, but am interested in hearing about some other softwares. What do you guys use and why?

I know its strengths for VFX, Proced-Modeling and Mantra. But I want to start doing other things in it that I would normally do in Maya or max. Such as animation and maybe even character design (w/ Zbrush).
I have to ask you guys. Do you use Houdini for anything other than VFX,P.Model and Mantra? I would like to eliminate the use of multiple 3d softwares if Houdini can get the job done….Can it? (keeping Zbrush of course)
If you have any examples, Id love to see them.

So with Houdini's extensive abilities. I wanted to know a little about specialty.
If I wanted to specialize in structure dynamics and modeling, is this something that could be employable? Or would 1 houdini user have to be the master off all?
What do the opportunities look like for Houdini modelers? And where?

Ah I see. I guess Im still new at this, but does anyone know the solution? Or at least where to point me in the direction to fixing it?

Ive been doing this tutorial with Houdini 11 :

And as usual when I use a new version of a software that isnt used in the tutorial things go wrong. Im having a problem with the following issues and would to know why they are going wrong.
1) When I render the image, the 2 liquids that I made red and blue both appear clear.
2) The cup itself appears as a strange noise like, or rough stone texture. Ive tried to apply other textures to it, but still renders out the same no matter what.
3) In the tutorial, the guy just grabbed the glass tutorial from the materials palete. I on the other hand do not have those materials or options.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or how to fix these issues? I have included some screenshots to help explain.

Yes I am running a 32 bit version. I am planning on upgrading to 64 soon. Until then, Is there a setting that could dampen the problem. Im even noticing that when Im just moving the camera around and not even animating, I still get this problem.

Im receiving a Memory Allocation Error and Houdini crashes. Im not really doing anything extreme. Doing a Partible fluid sim, thats no more than 50 frames. Its just a basic sphere colliding with the ground. I have 4 gigs of ram. I would expect that to be more than enough to get the job done. Does anyone know a setting I can adjust to optimize the memory usage to avoid the problem. I dont have anything else in the background running.

There's a menu in the lower right corner of the interface that reads “On Mouse Up”. Change that to “Auto Update”.

Im looking to buy a book on Houdini. I know that the current version 10 is pretty new, and also the new version coming 11. I was looking at the sidefx “Learning Materials” section and I came across these:

I know both books offer tips and tricks. But Im curious if they are worth getting if they are outdated compared to the newer versions of Houdini.
If anyone can suggest worthy physical reading material, thats up to date id appreciate it.

When Im using a slider, the geometry does not update in real time. It will only update when I release the mouse. I thought it was real time toggle, but it isnt helping. Im using the wired bend operator. How do I get it to visually update as I am using the slider?
