if all you want is to create velocity data, jason iverson explained how to do it here [sidefx.com].
as for a fix to the Velocity Blur COP, how about a buggy per pixel streak blur [youtube.com] instead?

I thought I'd take a stab at this and try to make it less “technical” … “missed it by that much.” ;o)

meant to add that installing H11 on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit is still much faster and has always worked.

aiworks
An update. Uninstalling the Intel software did not help. It was only disabling the WiFi card in the “Device Manager” that resolved the problem.
coincidence* or not, awesome detective work!
after reinstalling:
can now run (edit 01) win32 ver on Vista 64 which previously had infinite licensing prob. ( build 460 )
(edit 02) and can now run win 64 bit version on Vista 64 which previously would install, but hkey and hmaster would crash with a seg fault. ( build 460 )
other than that, i was able to keep the AV and firewall up and i did have one set of lingering keys in the file.
peace & 42

Houdini Lounge » Using Ramp param VOPSOP to adjust the profile of a curve?

after tinkering a bit, i now have more Q's than i started with:
is the curve planar? do you want to be able to transform into an arbitrary direction a la Transform Axis SOP? or only along X, Y or Z axes? or along their point normals? as for a VOP SOP, how does one limit it's scope to a point group? ( skipped for now. thinking setting attrib to -1 or something then filling the 0..1 range then i can use an If-Then VOP. other suggestions? )
if using the (N / (NPT -1)) method, how does one deal w/ a point group that doesn't start with 0? isn't sequential? ( del non sel, sorted by vec, set attrib and transferred back to original pts )
can the Transform Axis SOP use point attributes in the Transform param field? used as a look-up into the ramp with the chramp() expression? ( i couldn't get this to work. seemed to only use the first value in the ramp )
my WIP solution uses a point group and so far requires the first value in the ramp to be zero or the whole mesh moves. “input” params include a vec to control the “u” attrib creation via a sort, a vec to set the transform direction, the ramp and a scale ( not just to inc but also invert the ramp ).
any suggestions welcome.

quick side thought: should H11 take over 20 minutes to install on vista64?
i have 10.0.528 working fine on same machine and was able to install H11 on a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 fine ( and installed very quickly ).
Edit: crash log is attached & via another thread I sent off an RFE.

same here. win vista 64. ati catalyst 10.3 and more recently 10.7
hkey and hmaster and even the command line sesictrl … “segmentation fault”. now the error dialog flashes on the screen for less than a second.
i got H10's hkey to accept H11 keys, but still no go.

is this what you mean?
(N / NPT) drives the ramp… then add the output to the coordinate you want to move.
you can tinker more by adding extra params to scale (multiply) the values more if you like.
ps - you don't have to do this in VOPS ( although probably faster ), you can append a ramp param from the “Edit Param Interface” and use “uv” or “bbx” or whatever to get your lookup value, but then you'll be in hscript ( or python) territory.
peace & 42
Edit: (N / NPT) has a small error ( N starts at zero )… for exactness, probably should be ( N / (NPT - 1 )) … just make sure you have more than one point.

Allegroi was going to reply that they are the same, at least visually, but when i went to run a binary comparison i noticed the files had a 90 byte size difference.
I didn't know about that method…
Is there a difference between the results?
what's the preferred method for comparing 2 images to see if they are identical? even if the file sizes are slightly different?
other than that, with the “edit param interface” method one gets to tell it what uv attribute to use. does the “mantra -u” method have such a feature?

thanks everybody! appreciate it.
FYI, i wasn't using the “mantra -u” explicit setup, but the “other one” mentioned off the odforce wiki post [odforce.net] about adding the extra params to mantra. same method, just a different way of getting there.

i'm trying to get a clean shader unwrap, but i appear to be getting artifacts too.
i've made my own VOP Vex Shop that fits N to 0..1 and pipes that into Cf.
is there a setting or something that i'm missing?
hip and my unwrapped shader texture map attached.

there's an alternative way to color – or colour – your points:

hopefully this might help someone.
i have a Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4830, running ubuntu 9.04 64bit and H10. the grfx is an integrated radeon 3100 IGP. Catalyst 9.8 installed and worked, but the 3D viewport, the shelf and various other parts would disappear and only reappear when clicked and then they'd disappear again. Sometimes it was hard to find them. ;o)
I attempted upgrading to Catalyst 9.9 with no luck. ubuntu would not boot correctly if at all. Eventually, i went back to 9.8 and …
turned off Visual Effects ( System -> Pref -> Appearance -> Visual Effects tab ) and Houdini runs like a charm ( and glxgears shows improved perf as well ).

where are we with this? is it a bug or a result of the new viewport code?
other than that, i'm curious if the following is valid ( or moot ) as a speed up to birthing particles based on the color of an image:
instead of using the pic() expression in the birth probability param, use Jeff's VOPs speedup to color points made with a Scatter SOP, delete points based on color, then birth particles from points.
other solutions appreciated, but my main focus is the apparent “speed-up” which may be erased or diminished with fixes made to the pic() expression etc.
thanks.

Technical Discussion » How to make a particle move along a ellipse orbit?

brianBurkei like this approach.I am curious how you could get a real elliptical orbit
Here's one approach with an SDF driving the orbit. The nice thing about this approach is the shape can be whatever you want it to be - no limits.
in tinkering with it, i noticed the orbit is expanding. i don't have a perfect fix, but i was able to use a Displace Along Normal VOP to get the points back onto the SDF surface… but now i get a little compression in Y. other attempts cause banding or bunching of the particles if allowed to run long enough.
what'd be a good method for keeping the particles in orbit without expanding and allow for more than just a flat film of particles?
another Q: how can a random velocity be set for each particle? so that some orbit faster than others? i tried sending “2*rand($ID)” via a param and multiply that with the outputted velocity, but it appears to be constant for all particles.
thanks.

just to make the decision making process even more fun!
AMD just “released” their 6-core CPU.
http://seekingalpha.com/article/140698-amd-rolls-out-six-core-chip-positioned-as-value-play [seekingalpha.com]
Intel already had a 6-core CPU and their Nehalem acts like ( pretends? ) to be an 8-core due to hyperthreading.
Soooo, whether or not you choose these alternatives or not, this could affect prices on older tech. maybe.
merry xmas everybody!

* First off, the actual total cost for something like this is a bit higher than $800. The “sticker price” doesn't include tax or S&H. Also, that is with 4GB of ram… 2GB per cpu… which, if my forum research tells me anything, is not enough. Furthermore, to upgrade to a DVD burner, it's another $30… add it all up and we're just north of $1K. *shudders*
( any financially blessed benevolent H TD's pls PM me. just kidding. )

probbinsI'm curious what this means, exactly. Does this mean GUI-less? If so, would us Apprentice users be able to use such a beast?
Certainly for a rendering box …

probbinsThank you *very* much for the heads up!
…The only caution I can think of is the Broadcomm network card. On some linux, particularly Ubuntu, this can be a PITA to get working correctly, wireless especially.
* Finally,
twodagain, if i get this far, i'm not aiming for top of the line graphics, but curious, would a PCIe 2.0 x16 downshift into an x8? or best to stick w/ “vanilla” x16? specifically, assuming an adapter is used – therefore, no change to the mobo or slot – is there any chance a small fire, nuclear explosion, personal harm or damage to gpu or mobo be had? :?:
The real-world difference between x16 and x8 for most graphics cards and applications is minimal. In most cases even the x8 bandwidth isn't even saturated. I think you have to go down to x4 before you get a noticeable hit.

thanks for the help.
perhaps a “heads up” : older posts show that older Dell's that have the x8 instead of the x16 don't allow the x16 to fit in w/o altering the slot thus voiding the warranty or getting some sort of a converter.
if anybody has realworld experience with this, it'd be nice to hear about it.
other than that, and not to suggest that we take advantage of our nice and helpful computer manufaturers, but if someone bought a system like this and then couldn't get it to work ( couldn't upgrade the graphics, issues installing Linux, couldn't get Houdini to run ) could we return it? anybody return a pc bought mail order? was it an enjoyable experience?
thanks again.

would an 8-core ( dual Opteron 2376 2.3GHz ) system that doesn't have a PCIe x16 slot be worth it?
http://dealnews.com/Dell-Power-Edge-T605-AMD-8-Core-2-3-GHz-Server-for-799-35-s-h/298144.html [dealnews.com]
if it only cost $800? which is more / less the cost of a mid range quad core these days ( granted w/ the potential for better gpu ).
note: i'm currently running a Geforce 6600 ( on AGP ) so even a slight upgrade in the gpu would be an improvement even if i had limited bandwidth w/ the PCIe x8 slot.
thanks in adv
