I'm trying to change the default Geometry node that I slap down at the /obj
level to include some gear that I find useful.
I've rooted around for a bit and I'm not sure where to do this. I presume I can change the geometry type properties, but that's bad, right?

Technical Discussion » getting values from a custom panel

I'm trying to create a custom panel to set global variables. The problem is I'm unsure of how get at whatever value i type into an input field in the custom panel and pass that to my script
I see the cuquery command as perhaps the only option, but i was rather hoping i could just have a button in the custom panel that would drive a script with the custom panel values being fed to the script as arguments.
Something like
Pfoo/bar/doStuff.cmd in.val out.val
wishful thinking no doubt.
I tried messing around with cuquery, but i guess i'm just screwing up the syntax.

You could always throw $OS in the group field. That'll make your group name the same as your node name.

Hey Mr Cat
I've been getting this all the time.
Simply undisplay any active COPs networks (uncheck the blue flag) and scrubbing. Should be as you expect it.
I've been banging on about this for a while now.
I'd guess you're working on windows too. It seems that COPs is cooking even when you're not in it.
SESI says it ain't so, but that's what the evidence suggests.
I don't know what is going on in COPs, but I'd say it's rooted.
Just make sure all you display flags are off and you should be ok.

The lines represent the particles velocity.
If you want to get rid of that, add an attribute SOP and kill the velocity.
You'll then need to enable points display, as your particles won't be visible in the viewport once you do this.

I think it's important that when you do your surfsect, you don't do it across the seam of your geometry. It seems to give dodgy results for sure.
I'm assuming when it does the cut, if the seam lies across the cut, you'll have three sections instead of two which makes it trickier to determine inside and outside of the cut.
The more pices of geometry you have the more confusing it's likely to get.
Maybe bust it down and cut each part individually.

I hope I'm not mising the point…
If you want to transform perpendicular to an edge loop you could do this using the construction plane.
Holding down th c key will let you click on three points of your geometry to define the construction plane orientation.
Be sure to click on three which best lie in the plane of youe edge loop.
This will snap the construction plane to the points you selected.
Make sure you first disconnect the jack by pressing the ‘ key. If you don’t, you selected geometry will orient at the samre time as the jack.
On your transform jack, a right click should give you some transform jack options. You want the one that orients it to the construction plane.
Then hit ‘ again to reconnect the jack and transform your geometry.
hope that’s what you're after

I'm sure most Houdini users aren't general users, so there is no need to clutter up the interface withg buttons for everything, but I take your point.
Issues like this can be frustrating. Dude, trying working with COPs for a bit.
If it's a persistent problem then it's trivial to create a custom panel button to do that anyway.
Sometimes there might be caching isues, in which case, turn off
texture view, flush cache, (maybe step to a new frame to force an update), then display texture again. A pain maybe, but then you hopefully aren't refreshing your texture cahe alll the time.
Somrtimes we have to live with these little issues just so we don't have to use Maya. Well, i do anyway.

Is the problem in chops to do with sample rate.
I'm presuming this would have to be set to a rate that breaks down nicely into your subframe steps.

It took a lot of people a lot of time to do these effects. I worked on Blade2 on some of the Vampire ashcarbon effects, and came in after the R+D guys had set it al up. They did a great job and it was a very smooth pipeline.
The Vampires were tracked in Maya and the effects work was done in houdini.
Houdini definitely has the best tools to do this. Then the compositing guys spent a lot a time stitching it all together.
It is probably quite difficult to develop the initial production pipeline, but once that's done then things *should* go smoothly.
Sometimes there were little problems that needed to be fixed but that was pretty straightforward with Houdini.

Hi Chris
To cut to the chase you can certainly use it as a one man band.
I'm freelancing at the moment with a copy of apprentice at home.
I've used Houdini both in a small boutique and also at the features level.
I have used expressons and also completely avoided them depending on whether or not i'm feeling artistic.
I would say that it is as capable as you are.
I doesn't have a whole bunch of plugins but depending on how technical you can get
you can usually figure out a solution. Or some helpful soul in the communitywill help you out. The scope of the package is truly immense.
Earlier versions of mantra gave us headaches with rendering artifacts, but these are supposedly all gone.
There certainly hasn't been a job that i've done in another package since starting to use Houdini, and scope of the stuff you can do with it sometimes makes me giggle.
Look at it a litle longer than a week though, and see how you get on.
If your mind takes to the different paradigm in hjow things are done it's easy to get to griops with.
Check out the expressions in the tutorials. They may seem a bit daunting at first, but eventualy you get to understand them and then use them all the time. And I would say my background is slightly less technical.
Hope this helps
regards
