You can do it in vop, You just have to convert the ids into a vector first, and then you can do a pcopen with this as lookupposition, it;s a mean hack, but it works. it would be far better if there would be a integer lookup
I did a RFE some weeks ago on this , having a lookup by attribute would be very handy

if You want to use a group, that does not exist, you get a error, so You need at least a empty group

i user them in popsims, grouping based on expressions is too slow, but with vop it is quite fast

I guess one main reason coulc be they do not share memory, and data exchange via PCIExpress is slow compared to videoram

thanks Dennis.
I'm will build a quite similar setup, cool to hear everything works fine. I'm considering this mainboard by tyan S7025AGM2NR.

@Dennis: What mainboard do You use ?
dennis.weil
I experienced the HT behaviour with Mac OS X as well as Ubuntu 11.04 so it's not an Ubuntu issue. Haven't tested it with Windows though.
I also tried Linux Mint which is available in an Ubuntu and a Debian Flavour. I liked it very much but in my opinion Ubuntu 11.04 had a better “runs out of the box” feeling to it.

the only limititantions that I'm aware of, are render resolution, no thirdparty rendering, a own fileformat(that turns every commercial session into non commercial) some resctrictions when writing out data

one mantra node for all takes means that You have to override all rendersettings in the take, including pathes and so on, and I just think it is easier to have a node for every take. it more visual.
and in the renderview You can select which pass to render by selecting the node without switching to that take.
takes can be confusing, and for me that works best.
when I want to render all passes I just use a merge on all rops and it's fine

i think one mantra node per take is better and clearer to manage on a renderfarm

another question that I have in my mind is what happens when You use 2 or more tesla cards. The size of the sim that a tesla card can handle depends on the memory of it, but do the memories of 2 cards add or not. My guess is not, as as soon as the card has to exchange data it slows down. but would be interesting to hear more about it from the sidefx people

there are more than one way. one way is to control the emission by primitive attrribute, but chances are good You will see the geometry resolution when emitting many points. another way is to emit many more points and filter the ones that are not needed at the first frame.
I attached a little example with both.
You could also combine both together

intersectVOP seems to be not threaded. I already asked about that at support
When You advect points through volume data it is fully threaded. not sure what prevents intersect to be threaded. at least there should be some info about that in the docs.
at least with intersect You can build own collision pops that work with animated geometry, that has not to be triangulated
I hope for 12

use the ROPOutput Driver SOP to write geometry to disk. with a filesop You can read it back.
as fileformat use bgeo, its fast, efficient and stores all attributes that are on Your geometry.
