Hey all,
I've just installed (eek!) Windows Vista, and I keep getting this error when I try to launch houdini:
License Error: Unable to connect to hserver for license aquisition.

Yeah, I had just noticed that it was removed from the Apprentice link and I was wondering if it was by design.

Don't get me wrong, I think that snoise(1,$ID,$F*.01) is as cool as the next guy, but I'm here to make pictures.

I've always wondered why this forum doesn't have a user gallery. For a software package dedicated to making pictures, there sure is a lack of imagery here. I'd think that the way to inspire new users would be entice them with pretty pictures.

At the Object level under the “Render” tab, turn “Displace Bound” to a value just higher than the world space amount that you're displacing the geometry.

It never occured to me that the primitive snap option did that, that's awesome! I owe you a Red Bull.

It's often important to add an extra span outside of the polybevel result or you'll end up with normals being interpolated across what you'd expect to be a flat surface. I usually use a polybevel set to “corner” followed by another polybevel set to one of the round options in order to get around this.

I think that with the increasing popularity of subd's, nurbs modelling isn't as common as it once was.

That's a good tip Andrew - it worked, thank you. It took a little longer (as expected) but it finished without me having to tile it.
And thanks to e.d.w.a.r.d. for bringing this thread to Andrew's attention.

By limiting the memory used for ray tesselations, how will the image be affected, if at all? What's a typical value?
edit: Upon further investigation it appears that e.d.w.a.r.d. had hit the nail on the head - it looks like I'm exceeding the 2 gig per process limit with the mantra operation. Stupid 32 bit processors.

When mantra finds a ray call does it immediately load everything in anticipation of a bounce or is it discriminate?

The “memory” command returns the following info:
Memory: 448.35 MB of 702.08 MB arena size
What should I be taking from this?

Is this the expected behaviour? I'm getting out of memory mantra crashes when there is ample virtual memory available in the paging file to draw from.
