Hi,
i am just “guessing” but:
occlusion depends on the geometry of an object.
this geometry is changeing when displaced. now the dirt/occusion would be different for this displaced geo.
maybe try this:
bake out occlusion maps and use them for displacement.
kind reagards

Hi Lars,
maybe you could elaborate a bit more what you are suggesting.
Do you have an example that shows your concept?
I am intrigued.
kind regards
Olaf

When you simulate water you will create a lot of data on the HD.
So SSD is nice but i would go for a bigger HD or maybe two, you are on a very tight budget. No SSDm means your win will bott slower and the software will start bit slower, but this is not realy a big deal.
As for the Brands: All the ones you mentioned are ok. I would look for a good deal or special sale. Again you are on a tight budget.
I have a ASUS VGA and a AsRock Motherboard.

ok for that budget i recommed:
i7 6700 300$
socket 1511 mainboard you get a decent one for 100$
32gb ram 180$
and the cheapest gtx 970 you can get. 350$
+ case, power, HD
Hmmm You might need about 11-1200$…
You would have a killer PC for houdini and maya and for the current high end games too.

Hi,
your processor is about 3 times slower. (Actually maybe even more)
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-4300+Quad-Core [cpubenchmark.net]
4
Benchmark: 4640
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-5820K+%40+3.30GHz&id=2340 [cpubenchmark.net]
Benchmark: 12991 (overclocked 15000+)
Now you definately need more than 8gb ram. And your motherboard has a max at 16gb.
If you are very low on budget get 8gb more ram, this will help you a lot.
However the amout of particles you can confortably work with is quite limited. Its not realy fun to work against the limits, but if you are patient and only want to learn the software this will do.
Your VGA will work. More is allways better Houdini can use GPUs to do simulations. This might actually be an option to upgrade your gpu first, if you are on a tight budget.

Hi,
my sys specs:
Intel Core i7 5820K - 3.3 GHz
64gb ram
This would be the fastest non xeon you can buy.
Maximum here is 64 gb ram and if you want to work with water etc. i would strongly recommend it. The more ram the better.
I think you would be ok with 32gb too, but lees is for sure no fun.
If this is above you budget:
get a i7 socket 1151 4ghz
and 32 gb ram
greetings
Olaf

Hi there,
the new principledshader is like a universal material lib. It is so easy to setup 90% of all materials needed now. I am very happy with it.
The rest would be textures and there is plenty other sources for that.
Plus you have great noises and some procedurals in houdini.
Maybe you should look at the great tutorials:
http://www.rohandalvi.net/textures/ [rohandalvi.net]
http://www.rohandalvi.net/shader/ [rohandalvi.net]
They where like an eye opener for me and speeded up my learning curve.
The tuts are not for free but worth every penny.
regards

The Orbolt Smart 3D Asset Store » Why is it so much crap available on Orbolt.com?

i agree with most that was said here. I wish too there would be more stuff like this: https://www.orbolt.com/asset/Haybyte::mb_plumage_system [orbolt.com] (it is a feather tool) very nice.
I also think that sidefx would wish for more complex stuff like this but…. big studios dont care about 80€ or so to release their inhouse tools.
And small freelance developers rarely have a tool like plumage to sell.
I have made some nice assets. But to make them saleable with niceer interface and documentation is a lot of work… I simply dont have time to prepare this.

Hi there,
for a shader i would like to use a list of floats from a .txt file.
It works all well with a Parameter set to String.
But not when i want to use a .txt file with the same text(values) in it.
Is there a special .txt format?
Any tips are welcome!
thx

Hi there,
any news on this? Will there be a precompiled version soon?
(Or maybe somebody wants to share a compiled version with me?)
Also (to Strob) where can i find: InstallGuide_en.docx ?
I am an ex 3dsmax user now FullTime on Houdini. But my old 3dsmax friends are hopeing for me to produce digital assets for them.
thx

For that you would use a “Wave Layer Tank” or a “Wave Tank” instead of the “Flat Tank”
