I was just wondering how often you guys upgrade to latest build… since ther's almost once a day or 3 a week.. do you reinstall houdini on every build?…
i'm actually using 387 build.. and today i see we're already on 389 .. fast.. but boring to reinstall every day :p
cheers.

Thanks a lot DaJuice… this really explained me the current limitation and workflow for Global Illumination… I'm also trying to render an Interior scene (I'll post the wip once I'll get the first lighting setup) with houdini to learn Lighting in Houdini itself….
I just hope mantra will be improved this way cause now its pretty hard to archieve correct, or maybe just nicer, results..
any words by someone from SideFx on this point?
cheers.

thanks a lot, that was at least really clearifying to me.. makes totally sense now.
therefore.. this means it's time for me to start write some shaders
anyone have a “Vex coding for noobies?”.
I'll try to write then my first shaders right now that i want that pins_toy rendered out of mantra… and the challenge of writing my own shaders is stimulating me a lot. thanks for your help.
cheers.

Sorry again for my post… but i really dont get why it seems I'm doing something really special while i'm not.. and I dont get any result or solutions.
Shadows trought Glass or just transparent objects.
brand new scene.
I've a grid GEO as a floor (with a plastic or anything else material).
a Box GEO as a glass (with VEx glass, or Vex Supermaterial)..
a Cone Light as a light (with or without shaders)..
that's it. I just have plain black shadow.
shadows are plain Black. the Box has been shaded with SuperMaterial, VEX Glass, no way to get shadows properly casted as I'd expect. When I color the transparency I should get Colored Shadows, aint it?… no way.. plain black shadows.
It takes longer to explain my problem that really figure it out.. i just cant get correct shadow from transparent objects .. i tried all glassy shaders from Houdini otl (vex glass, supermaterial) and all type of shadows shaders for the light, shop and no-shopped…
what i might be stuck with is the Mantra Ray sampling maybe.. which i'm not familiar yet (i'm a really newbie).
please, can anybody guide me trought this simple process?
thanks a lot in advance.

Houdini last build (114)
OS XP…
and 1 Gb Ram…
is not really a RAM problem cause i dont even allocate half of the ram i have.. and i'm talking about a really small scene (just one source.. 200 particles.. and two obstacles)..
from the techimage pinshead PDF tutorial (the BEST tutorial ever found on the net.. EVER!! i wish there where more tutorials so well made around :]) :
9.2 BUG
At the time of writing, the Houdini Apprentice edition distributed on CD
contained a bug that caused a memory leak when using the pic() functions to
reference the new COPv2 compositing networks. You will notice if your
distribution suffers from this bug if the available memory on your system
decreases rapidly in proportion to the amount of times the pic() function is
cooked e.g. Playing through the scene while viewing the displaced geometry
grid.
The best approach is to upgrade your Houdini installation to a distribution that
no longer contains this bug. Check the Side Effects web site
(http://www.sidefx.com/ [sidefx.com] ), or its mirrors, to see if a download is available to
you.
Alternatively, the memory leak does not occur using the older style Houdini compositing networks. These dont show up inside Houdini by default. You need to set the environment variable HOUDINI_COPTOPMAT to 1. You can then access the old style Houdini compositing network and build the samenetworks. You are on your own, however, in implanting the compositing side of this tutorial. The reference to the old style compositing network is /comp/ .
Rather than /img/ .
end of pasted text
now… this happens here also on playing plarticles … for a while of time…
its like a … overload (fake cause it isnt at real) instead of refreshing the cache each play restart…
hope this helps on explaing my prob :]

wasnt this fixed or not present after release 5.5?…
I still have that problem when playing particles for a while.. or playing with compositing nodes to deform my geometry… …
anyone with same problem?
