It is sad… Houdini have a great potential to be a alternative to character animation…but like this is difficult to think out FX but I will try small projects until SideFX improve it.

Houdini is a monster in VFX industry.
The new algorithm Vellum is wonderful but I think for that reason a lot of user(me include) try to see new areas like modeling or render or animation.
No one have doubt about procedural tool that exist very better in Houdini but new user that came to Houdini is missing some improvements in our software thas is more clear in others aplication.
But SideFX is not a giant company like Autodesk or Adobe if we see Houdini 17 for this point of view Houdini is growing very well.
OK I will wait for use Houdini 17 and I will have a real opinion about it but I believe in SideFX and I respect all development in H-17.
Thank you SideFX for the new release.

I personally do not like the presentation for two reasons:
01 SideFX had not time to explain things properly
02 Not any news in render.
1) In my opinion Sneak a Pick was enough to show the big news about Houdini.
But was clear that the alive presentation had not enough time to explain thing properly.
In that scenario is better make individual videos and show the costumer the improvements and explain the new tools.
2) It is a “mantra” in marketing never tell things that you can not show or prove.
In Sneak a Pick SideFX tell about denoiser and in presentation only in the last minute we ear little words about it?!
Please it make me very unhappy if Mantra is not ready why in the world you show it in Sneak a Peak?
If you(SideFX) think it is not the right time to show it(Mantra improvements) OK but what you did was not good.
About the improvements I became happy with animation tools became more clear but in modeling….my opinion is simple if you have no interest in sculpt tools like Blender or Modo you can make a better bridge with Zbrush and 3D Coat even Blender can help.
But your new modeling tool will not working well without a model to refer.
OK it is all that I can tell now.

I have the same problem in 16.5.496.

If Mantra start to use GPU Houdini will won a lot more users.
But to be honest if mantra use a good denoiser and became fast it will be enough

Hi Pallotta welcome to Houdini's world.
About to learning Houdini the only thing important here is that Houdini is very flexible and powerful.
What this mean?
In Houdini you can make your own solution like cloth, hair, and a lot of simulation of course exist some made material but the power here is to make what you need.
This power you can translate in to see what happen inside the tools or nodes with a simple click.
You can go deep and deep, but this kind of thinking is different from other packages that try to help you hidden the information or put this information not clear and accessible.
To think here in Houdini at first glance is very strange… but after you start to understand the logic you will get a lot of freedom and probably you will never get back again.
But the world is big and you need to understand your real need in order to acquire your goals, for example Blender for simple stuff is very fast, Maya have dozen of tutorials to help, Modo is very popular to modeling and Houdini give to you power and control.
About your learning path the answer is simple, in order to learn Maya I dedicated my time during several month, the same was to Blender for Houdini it took me the same time, if you really want to learn your effort will be the difference.
Here in SideFX site you will have a lot of material, tutorials and interviews for help and improve your knowledge.
But if you really really need some thing simple to learning… the true is continuing in the 3d package that you think is more comfortable and when is possible to you buying a plugin to it…
But again in Houdini you eventually will make your own solution for your needs this is the beauty about Houdini.

I use Houdini like a freelancer and to be honest the most slow render in my test is Mantra.
If Houdini Indie not have third party render it will be impossible to use Houdini(my opinion).
Houdini Indie bring new life to SideFX, people like me that can buy only a single core I7 but not exactaly a renderfarm or two processor in one machine had difficult to work.
Mantra is good! Mantra is beautifull! Mantra is integrate…. I know it all.
But if I can not render my jobt in time I will not make money… but we had a talk about it in “thoughts about mantra” and SideFX probably read it a lot…
I think here is not necessary to open this speech again

The two areas that Houdini need to be more strong is a Render Engine and Character Animation.
If character rigging and animation became more friendly more user come to Houdini especially if we think the big advantage that SideFx bring to us with Houdini Indie ;-)
It is not a criticizes but I am a little tired to see FX at ever Houdini showreel all the time.
But it is my fault too :-)

Hi Mr Rmagee congratulation again for you and SidFX.
The big problem is to start in Houdini, I am sorry but what I saw since I started is only the same thing, everybody is very worried to tell that Houdini is procedural and show some things that not help beginners.
Today we have a lot of material for intermediate people but for start in Houdini we have nothing very good until today I recommend John Moncrief because is the only easy way to learn tha I found.
Another big lack is the documentation sincerely it need a very careful attention a lot of people love to read and the documentation need to be more friendly and more artistic whenever is possible.
I Know it is a boring stuff but here in Brazil I am a Computer Graphic teacher but the people is the same around the world a lot of students ask me how start in Houdini and some intermediate user in Maya or other software not understand how transfer their knowledge to Houdini.
An example time ago SideFx put an video about Motion Graphic in Houdini and Entagma was there with a very beautiful stuff… but after that a man that was a teacher in Adobe, Cinema 4d show a very basic how to in Houdini very very basic but a lot o people comment it in Vimeo to ask more to help because a lot of people could understand.
Here in Brazil I teaches people with different age but it is all the same around the world we need in Houdini more KIS “keep it simple” believe me until Mr Rohan Dalvi is hard to start…
It not new but a lot of people want an alternative to Maya an Houdini is the Strongest competitor to win this place but we need some help.
When I start in Maya PLE what help me was “The Art Of May” now we need “The Magic Of Houdini” because today is very difficult to have Houdini for the first 3D package…

Congratulation for this initiative I downloaded this amazing pdf(HOUDINI FOUNDATIONS | GDC 2018 EDITION) and I am reading all articles.
To be honest I never seen a good text like this since I started in Houdini 15 in my opinion if you (SideFX) change your Houdini's help into something like this you will get a lot of new user and a lot of them will be very proud to read the Houdini's help.
I am still a Houdini's Indie user and today I am very closer to Unreal but in new versions of Houdini I want to use Houdini for character animation…I tried it few times ago and the performance is very slow compared with Maya.
It not a big problem because your Mplay is very good but if you can improve it (this slow and change it for real time animation) the experience will be great.
In the future if possible will be very happy to see more tutorials about character rigging from the scratch like Mr Actor showed to us.
But any way thank you very much.

I am very happy because now we(Indies) can do more with Houdini(H).
I was sad about the fact that resolution was to smalls for this days…but now it is very suitable.
Of course the price still very good to be honest only Blender can surpass H in price but I can do a lot of good things here in big scale that was difficult in other software.

If you can invest a little money you can start at Pluralsight with “Houdini Core Skill” stay with John Moncrief.
You will see Houdini 15, the logic is clear but some nodes and the interface is a little bit different but nothing to worry.
