Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
I'm not sure if its a bug or not, but Houdini Master 8.2.13 on linux (ubuntu) doesn't give the .wav or .aiff options in the ‘Save Data Channels’ extension dropdown menu, Whereas on the windows run 8.1.704 it does. I'll post it in the ‘bugs’ related section to see what they say.
Thanks for the help ,

Thanks Jeff,
I am having some problems doing what you said on a linux (running 8.2.13). It didn't work for some reason. I've subsequently tried it on a friends machine (windows) running version 8.1 build 704.. and it worked.
The one thing I did notice when checking the outputted audio file (from the windows machine) was that it sounded horridly scratchy when played with windows media player, even though it sounds fine when playing in Houdini. Any idea why this might be happening?
Thanks,
srgb

So, with jjstanley's excellent help I've managed to put together a very simple ‘heart’ section with a pulsating movement that is driven by an actual heartbeat audio file.
I have a question regarding the audio: I have manipulated the audio wave within CHOPs, but I have no idea how to export it out as a new audio file so that I may be able to use it with the final rendered images. Any ideas?
I've attached the hip file for you to have a look if you want.
The .wav file can be obtained here: http://www.zshare.net/audio/2743575d30e13a/ [zshare.net]
Thanks all.

Thanks jjstanley, I was going to start looking into using CHOPs tomorrow by going through Old School's blog tutorials (someone on odforce mentioned using CHOPs too), so you're example is perfectly timed . I had a quick scan through your example and it seems to be exactly what I am looking to use. I was wondering what format the audio files that one brings into CHOPs have to be in so that they can be used as you have used the default wave forms in your example. I have a .wav heartbeat that I want to test out with the blendshapes method you showed me, but when I plugged it in it didn't work. I'm guessing I have to convert it somehow?
Thanks for the help,
srgb

Hi,
I'm looking into making an object expand and contract back to its original state as a heart would act when beating. The trick is that I want separate areas to expand and contract at slightly different times, and eventually be able to have control over the irregularity of the beat. Any ideas regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ladies and gents.
Cheers,
srgb

Thanks for the information Phenom. When I said, “It seems quite strange that such a versatile tool is not more prominent in today's industry”, I was basing this statement on the information, or rather, the lack thereof regarding sprites that I came across in my online search sessions. I found it rather hard to find articles in which the people involved with special fx shots for films ever mentioned sprites. I guess the fault lies in my presumption. I have just received an email from a very helpful gentleman in Australia who echoes the very things that you have pointed out. I am here to learn, so thank you for the insight.
When you mention ‘economy’ are you referring to render time?

srgb

Hi Miguel, you have created some amazing pieces of work! As the forerunning individual in sprite-based rendering that I have encountered in the Sidefx forum so far, I was wondering if you be so kind as to provide me with a few of your personal opinions?
You seem to have a very sound knowledge of Houdini's VOPs level. Do you think that the ability to create high quality, fully CG sprite-based renders for volumetric smoke, snow, fire (i.e. not using any live-action footage for texturing as WETA did for the Balrog) is dependant on having a very good understanding of VOPs (and expressions)?
The reason I ask is because I completed your very thorough ‘Meteor’ tutorial and achieved some really nice results, but without a better understanding of VOPs and expressions on my part, I don't feel that I would be able to create the high standard of work that you have produced.
Do you have any advice for new Houdini users who are interested in pursuing the use of sprites in their work? Should they perhaps focus on the other areas first (such as VOPs and expressions) to gain a clearer understanding of the power that sprites can give you?
And, what do you think are the limitations of sprites with regards to being used as a tool for visual effects shots in films?
Thanks you for your time, and the inspiration that you provide to all of us.
Regards,
srgb
PS. Would you mind if I showed sections of your tutorial work (i.e. your excellent productions) on the website that I am creating for my Masters Student Research Project? You will be credited within the site and a link will be provided to your home page (if its ok with you)?

Hi, is it possible to convert a sequence of tiffs into a single .rat file? I have a sequence of smoke images that I want to play in a repeating fashion as they are shown on the sprites that are instanced to particles. When I sourced the tiff sequence into a vex layered surface shader and then sourced that shader into the sprites and put it on repeat it only shows the first image in the sequence while the particles are emmiting. I'm trying to get the smoke sequence to play on each sprite.
Any help would be much appreciated

Hey all,
Having recently stumbled upon sprite-based rendering I am quite surprised to find that the technique is not used more widely (and more frequently) in films. The brilliant results that WETA achieved by using the combination of real life footage on sprites for the fire and smoke that emits from the Balrog, and the more recent work done by MPC on the ‘Sunshine’ cloud sequences, are a clear indication that the technique can be very successful.
It seems quite strange that such a versatile tool is not more prominent in today's industry.
Have any of you used sprites in projects?
If you have, what did you find to be negative or positive aspects in using them?
Why do you think that more people don't use sprites?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone, have a great day!
