I'd rather buy the highest or the lowest….not the middle…-.-!
As I know, i7 is much faster than i5, if I were you, I will get i7.

As the iPad is getting popular, could you release the non-flash version of houdini website for the iPad or iPhone users ?

Maybe you could write it like this to your own DSO something like this :
pipeline : read the particle info with your DSO -> instance your geo onto the particles
RtString *data;
RtBound bound;
RiProcedural(data, bound, RiProcDynamicLoad, freedata)
You can also have a look at “ cluster this ” plugin for houdini.
Hope this helps.

I had the same problem before. I solved it in this way :
(If the models are built with maya)
import the models from maya into houdini, use facet sop to re-calculate the normals.
export the models for massive to do the sim and export to ribs.
Import the ribs into Houdini to render with PRMAN.
Hope this helps.

My linux desktop at work just packed up this week, 3 months after the support contract expired, so now I'm in the market for a new machine. I'd quite like to have a MacPro but with this Houdini issue taking forever to get fixed up and the fact that they don't support high end graphics cards I can't really make the switch with confidence. $10k+ will most likely still be going to Dell/HP.
I still recommend you to buy mac book pro. You will understand after you buy it.
You can use 10.5 OSX, it has no problem on houdini viewport.

I previewed my render with mplay on OSX. I exported the mov file from it and it is very rough.
How to setup the export compress parameters with the mov export from mplayer on OSX? I remember there would pop up the parameters to tweak on windows.

“If you were to have reverse engineered Pixar's perlin noise, better be careful where you use that. ”

Is it the “Perlin noise” ?
and the “Perlin noise” is the “improved perlin noise” ?
Anyone knows the c code of the “Original Perlin noise”?
