Has anyone use the VFX School tutorials? If so have you specifically gone through the Film FX course using H18? The course is initially designed for H17.
If so, I have a couple of questions for you…
1. I noticed in Week 03 tutorial, chapter 03 when the “+” is added in front of the “=” to the first line in VEXpression
@P = @P + @v * @TimeInc; the resulting animation does not have the desired effect as in the tutorial. Is this a glitch in Houdini (v17 vs 18)?
2. In Lesson 5 of Week 3 by the end of the chapter the result I get is different than what it should be. I think it has to do with the point wrangle VEXpression “v@v = v@N;” but am not sure. My model ends up with the point solver directing the particles 45 degrees upward from the grid rather than perpendicular in the X-axis as the tutorial does. I've gone over the tutorial 3 times with same result. The included HIPLC in the resource file of the same chapter also exhibits the same effect which is different than what it should be in tutorial.

I recently updated Houdini to v18.0.391 and now receive this message whenever H is launched. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Very helpful info and yet very archaic methodology. Lol!
I'm building the new Core i9 9900K machine this weekend so I'll be sure to return license first.
Thanks again.

Thanks, Christopher.
What happens if the machine that has Houdini installed/licensed on is inadvertently taken offline/reformatted let's say without returning said license?
I can easily return the license on the existing computer but am thinking if I forget that one time which will be inevitable.

I'm in the midst of building a new desktop PC. Is it a simple process to “deactivate” a Houdini license on current machine to activate on the new when ready? What happens if one were to forget to deactivate before the machine is retired? Is it all handled server side or software?
TIA. Stay warm!

With the release of 17 is there any thought on a promo discount on licenses? I sadly let my Indie sub expire last year due to no time to learn. It was a one year license before the two year became available. Even though a 2 year license is substantially discounted compared to a single year I thought I might sub again if there was a deal. Exchange rate turns that $399 into some big Canadian bucks.

I think the price increase is unwarranted. The single license/dual computer has been a long requested ability by users. 4K rendering is nice but not everyone will utilize it.
Now I have to decide whether renewing Indie will be worthwhile considering the jump in price especially in Canadian dollars.

I just purchased Indie today and get the same error. I sent an email to SideFX Support in regards to this.
Lol! After sending an email to support I discovered an email in my inbox containing a different password to use. This password along with my email addy worked! Check your email from “License Manager” which will have a different p/w than what you registered for the forum and such.

Usage means how much I use the particular system so I use the laptop 3/4 of the time. Desktop is not as convenient since it's located in a downstairs home office away from the family and stuff (actually that sounds convenient ;-) )

Quick! My finger is on the “BUY” button…
Since according to EULA it's a single comp install only I need to decide which one to stick Indie on for license registration:
Laptop: Core i7 6700HQ 2.6GHz, 32GB DDR4, GTX980M | Usage 75%
Desktop: Core i7 2600K 3.4GHz, 32GB DDR3, GTX1070 | Usage 25%
Or, dammit, do I just pony up the chump change for two licenses?
Oh the pressure!

I went and read the EULA and it does indicate a single installation only per license. This is unfortunate as I too would like the ability to have Houdini installed on both a single desktop and single laptop with the convenience of using the software from whichever location. I am on the cusp of buying Houdini Indie but now have to decide which machine I'll install/register on.
Perhaps SideFX can look into this and provide us the opportunity for a dual install/single use scenario? All the other software devs I purchase/subscribe to allow this.

I'm glad to see this subforum exists. As an XSI user from way back a little part of me died inside when Autodesk took over and booleaned Softimage into the ground. I'm completely new to Houdini and like what I see in the upcoming Houdini 16 release which has some resemblance to XSI. Hope to see this forum get utilized by former XSI'ers.

The new features look awesome!
I have a quick question: I recently (last month) purchased an Indie license for Houdini 15.5.
With version 16 now being released, is there a way for me to upgrade my Indie license to version 16 or would I have to re-purchase a full new license?
Thank you!
Because Indie is subscription-based annually doesn't that mean any upgrade/point release is automatic as long yearly purchase is maintained?

@Pixel8d - see above, the “buy” website is updated with the new prices and Indie is still there. Has been discussed above.
Yup thanks, saw those posts after I posted mine. Doh! It's good Indie is still in the mix. Time to hit the ‘buy’ button!

Same here watching from Western Canada. Voice audio was too low as well. Hope it gets cleaned up in the re-release version.
Also, atm not sure how I feel about the new Core/FX version. Seems like Indie was a way better option considering it was FX but @ yearly subscription. Core will have less features now? I was going to subscribe to Indie but will hold off since I'm worried it will get overwritten by 16 Core when released? Or am I misunderstanding the new business model?

Just out of curiosity…what would make Redshift better than say Thea Render or Octane?
Let's see … there would be:
- speed
- performance
- lack of lag
- faster results
- quicker invoicing thanks to the above
- less waiting
- more time for important things in life
Oh, and it's faster, too, gives more performance and … speed.

Oh, so you've tried them all out then and came to that comparative conclusion? Cool, good to know!

Asking because I'm also researching a 3rd party rendering solution to cover a variety of 3D software.
