I think this attib can help
"You can assign a SOP attribute named usdvolumesavepath to specify a custom path to save the volume file to when using the USD ROP. This attribute is translated into the HoudiniSavePath metadata on the USD field prim."

Solaris and Karma » SOP Import for Volumes with specified path attrib

Hi,
This idea works fine on meshes, but I cannot get it work on volumes.
I have few VDBs, each with "path" attib which specifies where the volume should arrive in USD hierarchy, including field name.
Unfortunately it doesn't not work.
Screenshot will speak for itself.
Thx

Houdini 19.0.436 Added a new USD ROP parameter that allows Houdini to work around some USD issues with overwriting USD files on network drives (at the cost of a performance penalty during the save)
Try this. Perhaps mtucker can chime in if this feature can help in this case.

Just an idea, perhaps using different file sharing protocol will make a difference?
Try switching to iSCSI from SMB, but really, its a wild guess.
I am planning to buy NAS and use it with USD pipeline, so that is quite concerning.

give it a try. You will notice that VDB will be written as usual, alongside with USD. So you get both !

When VolumeLOP loads VDB from disk, it needs to load it and parse it for existing volumes(density, vel, temp, etc). The bigger the file, the longer it will take, and that happens per frame.
I had the same issue. To solve it, I started saving VDBs to disk as a USD. This way all necessary info is written to USD while data is in memory. Then I can reference that USD file in LOPs at very high speed.

Is this volume being imported to LOPs with SOP Import or Volume where you specify path to VDB?

Hi,
Denoiser OIDN and Optix does the trick, but AOVs are not denoised.
Is there any checkbox that I am missing? Or would it be cool RFE?
Hopefully it will be obsolete in 2 weeks.
cheers

Got you.
I was just trying to cover edge case where I don't know the name of the parameter that is switching.

Hi,
Is there a way to get the "active" (the one with solid line) connection of a node with python?
Surely I can query Switch parameter to find out which one is it, but isn't there any shortcut method?

ahh, thanks for directions. Here is what I have learned so far.
VMware provides overall better experience compared to VirtualBox.
On VMware I get OpenGL4.x compared to OpenGl3.x on VirtualBox - out of the box, without installing extra drivers.
Both running Mesa in software mode.
On VMware with OpenGL4.x I can run H18.0, but any 18.5 is crashing.
I will try to make a ticket with SESI, but not sure if they will pursue unsupported OS config.
It used to work not so long time ago, hopefully it can work again.
cheers!

Hi,
Has anyone successfully run Houdini on Linux via VirtualBox?
I'm developing on Win, and sometimes need to test it on Linux. VirtualBox is way more convenient then dual boot.
I am getting this crash when running Houdini 18.5.672 on Ubuntu 20.04 via VirtualBox 6.1
I might try vmware, but I have a feeling its the lack of "proper" gpu device that is causing the trouble.
Thanks

Hi,
Im puzzled with specific argument that I pass to Hython. Its ignored. Whats so particular about it? It works fine in vanilla Python. Its already breaking if I use -j instead of -job.
args.py
hython.exe args.py -bob john
hython.exe args.py -job john
thanks

I agree with path/name attributes, they are interpreted at default in certain LOPs.
Even if I rename s@name to s@piece and use it as a Path Attribute in Import Configuration, I get unstable result.
Why I do it in the first place? I want Prototypes to have names from s@piece attrib.
