I'd pay (as long as it wasn't too pricey).

I was just wondering (hoping) if SESI would consider lifting the Apprentice restriction on mantra only being single threaded. I don't think it serves any purpose as the limited resolution and the Houdini logo printed on the output image act as adequate penalties for using a non-commercial edition and work well to deter commercial use.
It's not like someone will suddenly be able to use Apprentice commercially if now their frames take 5mins instead of 15mins to render - the other restrictions make sure of that. Having to wait longer for renders only serves to infuriate.
Just think of the PR coup - another feather in the Apprentice cap… could come in handy with the big H9 push in persuading more to learn Houdini.

jason_iversenI noticed SESI recently posted in the ZB forums inviting Canadian Zbrushers to apply for internships with them. I take this as a sign that things might be moving in the direction you suggest. I hope they get some worthy takers - http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=37302 [zbrushcentral.com]
One day SESI or someone should put together a comprehensive set of ZB tools and also some user documentation (on OdWiki?)…

Hi Serg
ZB spits out its UVs as vertex attributes. Using an attribute promote sop to convert them to point attributes before sending them to your disp sop should sort things out.

Hi
If anyone out there is interested in learning Houdini from scratch, and wants to be part of an online class, please register your support over at 3DBuzz.
Basically, Buzz is polling for which class he should do next. He's just finished producing content for a Maya Fundamentals class - a whopping 70+ hrs of video content, and is wondering in which direction he should go next. More Maya seems to be very popular…
Now that providing training has become 3DBuzz's sole income, logic says they should opt with the more lucratively option (maya). But anyone who knows Buzz, and knows Houdini, knows of the passion he has got for Houdini - so lets make it easy for him - if you are interested in partaking in a Houdini class, please register your support in this thread - http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=112230&page=1&pp=20 [3dbuzz.com]

Yup, I'm in the same boat…guess it's going to be a ZBrush weekend for me then.
I thought a recently introduced feature of Houdini was to allow license periods to have a small extension overlap to cater for moments like these?

Yesterday, someone over on the ZBrush Forum posted a link to the Blender MakeHuman project, which is currently in beta - http://www.dedalo-3d.com/index.php?filename=SXCOL/makehuman/news/mahehuman20winter01_is_out.html [dedalo-3d.com]
I'm not saying it's what you're looking for, least of all as it isn't ready yet, but it may be interesting just to have a peak…

It seems like you are another unfortunate caught out by the hidden menu in the side panel thingy. If you hover your mouse over the right boader of the help pane a button strip changes to lilac - just press to expand. Most of your querys are answered there… not intirely sure about 3 though.

As you don't need any deformations to occur, all you need to do is to parent your geo objects to their respective bone objects. No need for capturing any of the geometry.
Looking at your layout though, I'd split up the geometry a little more - so each moving part is in it's own object (fingers for example).
Nice looking robot btw
EDIT: pipped to the post by arctor

It may be overkill for what you want, but Renato Tarabella has a great example file on his site that may give you a few ideas - http://www.tarabella.it/Houdini/Houdini.html [tarabella.it]

I have this problem too, when loading some of the starter files from the html help. But opening the hip the normal way from the demo folder works fine for me.

I've just dug out issue 30 of the mag again (forgot what the tut was about it was so long ago). In retrospect it doesn't really go into much detail, as it only serves as an intoduction into finding your way around the animation interface for the face and how to rig/setup the legs. There isnt anything on facial setup.
Have you seen the tutorials (and scene files) in the html help of the latest 6.1 version though. There is one on facial setup using the Wire Deformer - might be worth a look if you haven't already seen it.

I thought SESI did have a strategy:- to fill the world with Apprentice users so that more companies would switch to using Houdini, thus generating more money for SESI which they'd invest in making Houdini even better and more affordable. I thought that was clear to all.

I've recently been introduced to Apprentice courtesy of 3DWorld mag, but am having some trouble with a tutorial featured in issue 30. Basically I cant even start the tut.
In the read me first files that come with the tut it says that some desks and custom operators have to be installed first. Very clear instructions for doing this are provide which I have followed, but when I open up the backstage.hip file (the first file of the tut) I'm just presented with an empty screen.
Obviously I've done something wrong - can anyone help.
Cheers in advance.
