Haha,
I have the history in my email ;-)
You're not talking to the walls, I'm just on something else.
And you're right my post wasn't for starting a big debate, I was just searching if I was using correctly the tool.
About the rest too you're right as always, but I suspect that doesn't bother too much other user not used to a clean workflow ala Softimage.

… and although it could be used more frequently on an organic model, there are the sculpting packages that offer a much greater flexibility for this type of tweaking.
That's an essential feature needed for the edit tool actually we can get 50% there by using a topobuild op but no falloff there.
By the way I'm not understanding clearly why there is 2 op for moving points around ;-)

Hello,
This been some times now I can't find a way to use the “Slide on surface” mode of the edit tool.
There's no doc on it did someone wrote some rough description on how to use this tool ?

Hi,
Hello how can i snap to an objects, like bones, nulls, cameras, lights whatever we need in the scene ?
I can't find a way to do that, trying to snap a full rig here… I'm aware of the little button on the object transform ;-)

Ok, here's the updated version…
It includes the above-mentioned fix as well as another improvement which is that it now no longer requires the original rig to be in rest position. This is done by grabbing the weights from the selected deform SOP's input and then transferring the deformed point positions to the shadow_geo (necessary because it's very common for the deform SOP to be set to ‘Delete Capture Attributes’, the auto-rig is setup this way).
Performing the capture correct after this step sets the whatever the current pose is as the ‘capture pose’. So then all subsequent deformations to the shadow_geo will take place *from* this point. Meaning bones and deformed geometry will always match up.
This could be handy if you're working with an already animated asset, that you don't want to mess about duplicating or resetting channels on to retrieve the rest position (I am really, really lazy )
Nulls also have their display scale set to something hopefully more sensible.
That's wonderfull!
How far are we from the exact inverse ? taking an imported fbx (matching RIG) driving a real Houdini rig ?
Trying to import Mocap from MotionBuilder then adjust modify in Houdini

How exactly can I use a tool downloaded here as a .shelf file ?
Seems so easy and so complicated in the same time !
I tried putting it in a toolbard folder referenced in the HOUDINI_TOOLBAR_PATH
Cheers

If you're on Windows, you can use a tablet on a dual display setup, by installing autohotkey and downloading and customizing the script I've attached.
I'm guessing you're on Mac OS, but I'm trying to make sure you're aware of what I've posted previously.
Yup we can with this AHK script but I was simply expressing my griefs on the wacom drivers in general. That's a user request for like 10 years and they only makes that possible over a tablet button, so useless…
By the way on macos they had a supercool app named Karabiner ! but the app is now very limited by the recent OS updates, so sad

@Marty Indeed, that's the main reason I use the mouse in everything else other than sculpting/drawing.
@all Looking at this thread and its common denominator (Mac OS), I feel like an elephant in a porcelain store. I hope, at least some Windows users will appreciate my solution to no one's problem.
Switching displays, yeah, just for that I can't use my tablet.
Plus Wacom doesn't provide any interface to map the Wacom function keys to keyboard keys !!!
So… As I've always have a hand on my keyboard for traditional shortcuts there is no way I'll should have to move it to the keys located on the tablet just for doing this or that related to the tablet.
I just don't understand the Wacom developers here…

@julca,
Houdini build in camera contain a temporary “look-at” with special handles, that's not exactly like in Softimage where this look-at is a reel null and the camera doesn't have any particular controlers in the viewport.
I found it working just fine in most anim cases.
Then, if needed, for now you can try the wonderfull QL camera rig ;-)

Soo,
How do you guys think about houdini 16.5 now ?
I saw 2 great little thing in the what's new
One of my biggest grip was the viewport with the wire colors and styles not so great to the eye while modeling compared to the clarity of Soft..
And you did you think it's time to say bye at Softimage ;-) ?

FixedI think this means you are not forced to release alt or space each time you want to adjust you position while in a quad view ! a so small fixe makes so huge experience changes ;-)
You can now click buttons in the toolbars around the viewport while holding Space to enter the view tool.
ImprovedOMG !
Objects now have a separate Pivot Rotate parameter to rotate the geometry’s local axes, for better animation control. Press Ins or ' to switch to the pivot handle.

About Transient key, this remind me the viewport tool.
The viewport transient key require you to hit alt each time you want to change view otherwise you're moving the same view outside of the view himself.
That's a feature who bug me when I'm trying to navigate in a quad view form example
Can you guys tell me if it's just me or this happens to you too.
In my opinion a transient key should reset his state accordingly where you are clicking.
Are you agree ?

Seriously, softimage selection and snapping was just perfect. This becomes obvious only after a day or two with it (mentored by a good old game modeler).

Hi, how can I disable the “click translate” mode on Objs, it's kind of anoying when you juste want to select something in the viewport and you end up with a slightly translated obj.

Hi, that's not mine at all.
That's a outgoing effort to rebuild in Houdini the most used ICE nodes.
This project started on the softimage mailing list by Andy Nicolas and other “big names” of the list.
Although I don't have time now to participate, I think building a lib for softies is a very good idea
