Sure, I've attached my file for reference. Yeah, I started to get the wind working after I posted this, not sure why it wasn't coming up the first time I tried.
Which part of the process were you wondering about?

Technical Discussion » Blend between hair grooms in H16

I'm trying to blend between two different hair grooms on the same object in Houdini 16.
I've attached a sample file, but basically I have set up hair for how I like it on two sample grids. Then I want to blend between those on a third grid. And not necessarily blend evenly throughout the grid. More like painting texture to choose which sections got which properties. I'm not sure if that is better done with painting textures, skin attributes, or something else.
Does anyone have an idea of how to do this?

Technical Discussion » Hairgen not following Guide Deform node

I have an animated mesh that I have added hair to. The deform guides work well and follow the mesh as it is animated. On the first frame, the static and deform guides are in the same location.
However, when I turn on the hairgen node, the created hairs do not follow the flow of the deformed guides. Although they do follow the flow of the static guides if I link the hairgen to the static Guide Deform.
So even though both static and deform guides are in the same place, the hairgen only seems to conform to the static guides.
I've attached pictures demonstrating this, the HIP file, and the geometry files I'm loading for reference.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Technical Discussion » Simulating Hair on animated alembic geometry

I've figured my problem out here, so I'll just leave this for future reference.
Importing an animated alembic file and applying hair to it seems to fail at simulation.
I've had to import an exported obj of the first frame of animation as my static mesh.
Then I imported the alembic as the animated geometry.
Applying the hair to the static mesh works, and the simulation will use the animated mesh.

Yeah, I've got hair appearing on the geo. It's just the sim that seems to be failing.
But I hadn't seen that masterclass yet, so thanks for the link. I'll reply again to this thread if I'm still having problems after the video.

I'm having trouble simulating hair on animated alembic geometry.
I import the alembic file and add hair which works fine. However when trying to simulate it, the hair jumps all over the entire body.
I believe this is because I have the hair guides set to Scatter on Surface which means they are slightly changing positions every frame which breaks the sim.
If I set the guides to Guide Per Point everything works well, except I can't control the distribution of the hair with skin attributes.
Does anyone have an idea on how to use a hair sim with animated alembic geometry?
Thanks

Hi all,
This is the first thing I've made in Houdini. My first test in Houdini 16 using the hair tools.
The sphere is transferring a furdirection attribute to the grass as it passes over. The direction is being driven by a CHOP of the sphere's motion passed through a slope to get it's velocity. That value is then normalized and passed as the direction the grass should face.
I'd still like to add some waving on the grass as if there's a gentle breeze, so any suggestions about how to do that would be appreciated.

Hi,
I'm trying to control the furdirection attribute with a skin attribute within Houdini 16. I believe I have my scene setup correctly, as it works sometimes, and then will randomly stop working. I've attached a simple HIP but here's the basic setup.
1. I have a grid with hair added to it.
2. Inside the grid object, I have an Attribute Create with furdirection as a 3-sized float
3. I then have a sphere inside the grid object with another Attribute Create with a different furdirection set
4. I am trying to attribute transfer the sphere furdirection into the grid.
Now this seems to randomly work, but then all of a sudden, the fur's direction will stop being picked up from the skin property. When that happens the Attribute Creates and the Attribute Transfer don't do anything.
Does anyone have an idea what could be going wrong?
This is made in Houdini Apprentice if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
Adam

I'm transfer to transfer a length attribute to fur guides in Houdini 16.
My setup seems quite basic, but I'm probably missing something fundamental on how this is done.
I have created a grid, and added fur to it. Then I've added a Set Length guide process and set the length to be driven by a Guide Attribute.
My thought was to then:
1. Put a sphere inside of the Guide Groom Node
2. Add a length attribute to the sphere
3. Animate the sphere moving across the grid
4. Attribute transfer the sphere's length attribute onto the guides
However when doing this nothing seems to work. Houdini crashes whenever I try to display the sphere. I've also tried with a box instead of a sphere, and the box will display but automatically be smoothed which makes me think something more complex is happening in the groom node and it's interfering with this technique.
Does anyone know how to transfer attributes to the fur system in Houdini 16?
Thanks

I'm just getting starting with Houdini, so it's quite possible that I've made a rookie mistake.
However, I'm having trouble getting this tutorial to work consistently. I am painting the length of fur with a brush, and when turning on the display flag for either the paint node or the following guideprocess node, I can see the masked fur length.
However, after selecting the guideprocess node itself, all the fur gets set to the same length again.
Additionally, when going back to the paint_length node, the painting job is not visible until I click on the object with the brush tool again.
Any idea what may be happening?
Thanks,
Adam
