I am also new to Houidini, so my guess as to your malady may be off.
As far as I have been able to figure out, SOPs perform their operation with polygon/vertex order in mind. So if you create a 10x10 sphere, then append Edit pulling points #10, 23, 30, and 40. Then go back to sphere SOP and change sphere parameters, say to 12X12, the results of Edit SOP will be changed as points #10,23,30,and 40 are no longer the same points that you originally pulled on a 10x10 sphere. Does that make sence? So if you have SOP network and change something in an early tile, that change will propagate down the network, perhaps with undesirable results.
The concern that SOPs will not evaluate properly is always on my mind, so I routinely (every 10 SOPs or so) delete history, as to have a plain mesh.

HI and THX for great feedback.
The model started as a box which was split, pulled, sculpted, uncounted times. I first modeled the front leg, then sourced it to make the hind leg. Then sourced again to make the arm. Then all three were merged and bridged to construct the body. Head is usually the toughest part. The front of the head was modeled in Houdini, the back I sourced from existing geometry that I modeled some time ago. In a way it was a test of how I can fuse legacy geometry with fresh construction. Houdini's tools, workflow, and GUI are really conducive to bridging the unconnected meshes together, and cleaning topology so the we end up with nice quad poly cage. I experiment with various forms, and here Houdini shines much brighter then Maya, or Lightwave. I would create these networks that branch off at various stages, then I would explore which form iteration I like the most. In formZ,MAYA, and Lightwave, I did that with multiple layers. Layers are great way to work, but I like the Houdini's branching approach much more. At this point, for modeling sub-division characters/creatures, Houdini is hands down my favorite.
Check out my other work at URL below.
Now how do I get myself a job as Houdini 3d modeler?

OK. Got it. Thanks. My custom CHOP appears in Filters. I expected it to appear in Generators. My thought was that I was creating a custom noise function, like Noise and Wave tiles in CHOP/Generators. How does one create Generators or Filters or any other types of CHOP tiles?
Once again , thanks. Learning this app is easier with user suppourt like yours.

Thanks. Great someone answered. However I am confused. I did the ‘Save As Context Operator’ in VOP ,as instructed. Then went to CHOP. Still have the same problem as before. What tile am I suppoused to use to bring in that newly created CHOP.

I just want to reiterate how good Houdini's polygonal modeling tools are. For sub-division cage construction its the best I have used. I am amazed how with relatively few tools its so easy to construct complex cages. My hats off to SideFX staff for the thought-out way they implented the modeling tools. I think there are some issues and improvements to be made, but overall the modeling in Houdini is outstanding. If I had the money, which I don't, I would make Houdini my primary character modeler. My hope is that one day I'd end up working in a Houdini based shop.

Hi all.
A while ago I began my Houdini training project. I posted some initial screen caps and some people from SideFX asked to keep them updated. So here are some more developed caps of the creature model. Right now I have no clue how to rig the skin to the skeleton in Houdini. I know exactly how I would it in 3DS MAX and Lightwave using Weight Maps and discreet vertex assignments, so I hope I can port some of those skills into Houdini. I took some time off modeling to understand how various modueles ties together concentrating on VEX and CHOPs. Also I am experimenting as to the best way to integrate facial animation with bones rigging. My current plan of attack is to have the head and body as different geometries. Then merge the two geometries into a master model, and isolate all facial animation, done with shape animation via Blend and Sequence Blend tiles.

If anyone has ideas as to how to best go about rigging this beast, please share it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi all.
I thought I had this figured but apparently I have not. I wish to import VEX Chop Operator (the Output ‘V’) values into a CHOP.
First I created a VEX Motion & Audio Operator in VEX
In it I created Turbulent Noise tile with Noise output appended to Output Tile V paramenter.
Just a simple noise function thats all.
So now I want to bring the output of this VEX into CHOP
In CHOP, in a new CHOP
Created Fetch tile.
In Fetch tile I made following Options;
OP: vex
Path: Chop1
Path: output1
Channels: *
Fetch: OP Control Channels
Select: Non-Constant Channels
Needless to say I got Red Play button. So I switched second path to ‘turbnoise1’ and Red Play button disappeared but I still had no signal graph in CHOP Viewer window. Experimenting with further permutation of settings in Fetch tile yilded no results.
So what am I doing wrong?
Thank you for help in adanvce.

Technical Discussion » Best darn sub-div modeler I've used!
- Dave_ah

I signed up for Apprentice program, and like all 3d apps, I started to learn Houdini by 1st tackling modeling tools. I've quite some experience with sub-division modeling/animation so I targeted that aspect. Namely Hoiudini;s polygonal tools. My opinion. Houdini is the BEST sub-division modeler I have used. I am comparing it to formZ, 3DS MAX, Lightwave, and MAYA. Once the basic network is setup, the flexibility is amazing. Some features, like topological edge deletion, are not present in Houdini, and I wish they were. Topological edge deletion is when an interior segment, of a poly, is deleted, he face, and the vertices, of that segment, are not deleted. Right now Blast will delete all faces that share the deleted segment. Another tool I really wish Houdini had is the Knife tool, also goes by name of Plane Slice. Basically, its like PolySplit, except it inserts segments along conic section line of intersection of plane with geometry. The Flat Wire Shaded drawing mode is worth its weight in gold. That is the single most usefull drawing mode for sub-div modeling, and coupled with no backface culling, seeing cage topology easy.
I decided to model a creature. Sence I am kinda fan of Cthulu lore, I always wanted to design my own creature.

Technical Discussion » Strange problem with Backround image in SOP right view.

Hi
I am experiencing strange problem with Backround image or COP display in SOP. I have a BK image that is a side elevation sketch.
I defined it as a backround in Display Options as Texture Mapped and Apply Zoom To Backround.
The image is displayed fine with full controls in front, top, and perspective views. But not at all in Right viewport. Now if I turn on Automatically Place Image or turn OFF Texture mapped options the BK image is displayed but in a wrong position. With either one of those options, which allow custom positioning, the BK is not displayed in Right viewport. So I am unable to edit the position and scale of BK image in right viewport, but have to settle for default. Why is that?
Thank you

I just don't understand why this SOP is not working.
I have a NURBS grid SOP, and NURBS Curve SOP.
The NURBS surface is piped into 1st input of CurveClay, the Curve into 2nd. Just like it sas in the help pop-up. Yet, every time, as soon as curve is piped into 2nd slot, CurveClay SOP turns red. It just doesn't seem to work.

Hi.
A little bit of confusion on what should a clear subject.
I modeled a simple polygonal geometr, in Houdini.
In OBJECTS I am unable to transform the pivot point, or more accuratly I can't see it transform. First the ‘P’ is not drawn as it is for imported geometry (through File SOP). Transforming of the pivot in Pivot fields does not move it. Second question. Where is the pivot orientation/rotation fields.
Thank you

At times the pointer changes to right pointing arrow with big + underneath. The only way, so far, to reset the cursor, is to restart Houdini.
ESC, and none of the mouse button clicks change it back. What is causing the pointer to change, and how do I change it back without restarting?
I've been experimenting with Blend SOP. This is the closest SOP for doing multi-target morphing (shape animation) I can find. I am wondering if there is another SOP like that handles more then 16 inputs?
So why only 16 inputs? Is that its becaouse doing lip-sinc animation requires 16 phenome targets?

Hi
I am confused as to how a CHOP is used. Details please. I have an object aniamted along a spline path with a F-Curve for position. I also created a Noise CHOP. My intention is to ‘modify’ the path F-Curve with Noise CHOP so that the object shakes and vibrates randomly as it moves along the path. What is the procedure to overlay the Noise CHOP on top of the Pos F-Curve?
Thank you

I allowed my Houdini Master Apprentice to expire, then re-authorized.
As if by magic, the troubles have disappeared.
Previously, when I entered into the two week countdown to expiration, Houdini just started misbehaving. Mantra would not launch, constant crashes using common tools. Now all these problems have disappeared, Houdini is behaving as per tutotials and PDF docs, apparently, becouse I got fresh codes. Can anyone shed light on this phenomah.

Hi all. This is aimed mainly at the nice folks form SideFX who frequent this forum. I got Houdini Apprentice with intention of learning it, and possibly using it at some time. But the Apprentice has left me with very negative impressions of Houdini. I don't know if I should continue, or its a just a waste of time, All I have are problems, and I don't know whether its user error, or Houdini really requires good amount of tech suppourt to work. I can't get much usefull learning done, as I am fighting the application. Here are samples of the most serious ones;
1. I cannot re-authorize the Apprentice. I keep getting same damn codes, from the SideFX site, that will expire on Aug.27. In any case the Licence Manager rejects the codes.
2. The program does not render at all. Period. Mantra either does not launch, or crashes upon start. Quitting the mantra.exe proccess, as reccomended by SideFX person, does not work. Rebooting, the app, Windows session, or the whole machine has no effect.
3. Any VEX network with Mandlebrot tile crashes the application.
4. File SOP does not load geometry files unless they are in the same directory as the saved project file. I originally thought that it was the directory depth. But it has turned out to be the that geometry source files must be in same directory as saved project. I import either polygonal OBJ files or NURBS in IGES (Maya) format. I model in Rhino and formZ.
I confirmed this by doing the following test. I took a copy of the same OBJ file, and placed it outside of project folder. In SOP File I first had it load the file in the same folder as saved project file, which loaded just fine.
I then retargeted the File SOP to load the file, outside of project folder. The file failed to load, and FileSOP tile turned to red play button. When retargeted to original , it loaded just fine. To verify the validity, I swapped the locations of two OBJ files. In new Houdini project I repeated the same test with same results. So there is something screwy going on with Houdini.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

I am sorry. I get no rendering whatsoever, from any project, at all. I LMB the render button in viewport and nothing. A Mantra output tile, turns red upon press of Render button. And there is no Mantra.exe, now, in Task Manager. Its like the rendering portion seems to have completely been turned off. I get no error messages anywhere, simply nothing happens.
Rebooting , the app or the machine, doesn't fix anything.
Perhaps its has something to do with re-authorising Apprentice, but I can't do that either. As the codes I get from SideFX are rejected by licence manager.

THanks. I had two Mantra.exe that were running as proccesses. But I still have the problem is that every session, Houdini starts to fail in rendering after short amount of time.
