I hate the fact that you need to select keyframe handles before you can edit them in the Maya channel editor. When working on animation heavy scenes, this becomes very tedious.
Houdini allows editing of handles on the fly. The region editing tool is awesome as well.
Oh, and the “graph per channel” setting in Houdini is great as well.

small request, but potent!
Give us middle mouse button(scroll wheel) to translate, rotate or scale from anywhere in the viewport after selection of objects or components are active, so that we don't always have to select the gizmo to move objects or selections.

You can find that tutorial on 3DBuzz and from what I recall its free. Search on old tutorials (old interface) and surely you will find it and it is still very much relevant.
Thanks, but the 3DBuzz rigging stuff is not for free. Not a problem though. I managed to learn allot from just playing around with the bone and capturing tools in Houdini…and reading the help files.
I'm finding it very clean and easy to rig in Houdini. The reverse foot rig took me a couple of minutes to figure out, and I found a couple of hidden gems that Softimage does not have.
I'm loving Houdini more and more every day.

I made a tension map in Houdini to learn more about building my own deformers. The transition from Softimage to Houdini has been painful and lots of fun at the same time.
The first two weeks were hard, but I'm slowly getting the hang of the interface and how to work around some of the selection bugs. I hope the next release will fix some of the old niggles.
Please have a look at the hip file and let me know if I'm doing it the right way.
Thanks
Werner

Thanks Jordi.
I'm having a blast learning Houdini. How about adding a video on building reverse foot rigs to the list? Rigging tutorials are hard to find in Houdini land.

Thanks MartybNz, but I could not get it to work. Found a channel viewport colour, but changing it does nothing.

Is there a way to change the ui background colour of the channel editor to anything other than black?
Can't find anything under color settings. Maybe one can edit it outside of Houdini.

I'm having a hard time with the Polyknit tool. Having used the create poly tool in Softimage I really think this is another modeling tool than needs attention.
Have a look at this and let me know what you think.

Another time saver during workflow would be translate, rotate and scale without having to actually click exactly on the gizmo's.
In Softimage and Maya you select the object and then hit translate. If you middle mouse click anywhere in the viewport and drag in the direction of a specific axis, it will constrain in that direction…a huge time saver when having your mouse close to the border between Network view and viewport.
Currently left and middle mouse does the same in Houdini when selecting and manipulating objects. It would be grate to have this functionality on middle mouse to constrain anywhere in the viewport.
I will do a screen capture if my explanation was bad.
Let me know if this request was unclear.

McNistor
Softimage is better than 3dsMax when it comes to poly modeling. I've worked with both (Maya as well, but irrelevant in this case) - modeled lots of stuff in both. 3dsMax was my first s/w when I got into 3d and it was the only one for about two yrs.
Ergo, if we need to get inspiration from somewhere (and we do for many things) then we'd better adopt as much as possible from Softimage in this area.
I have to agree with Mcnistor here. I have worked in SI, Max and Maya and when it comes to modeling there is only on application to look at and that is SI.

Thank you Jordi, for the time and effort you are putting into this. Your efforts helps me to sell the idea of turning our studio into a Houdini shop to my peers.
Every evening after a long day I come home and check this thread to see if there is something new to learn. After a month of digging into Maya and Houdini I can honestly say that I feel happy to slowly fall in love with a 3d application again. I should say thanks to SideFx, but your efforts makes it all worth while.
Thanks again, and thanks to all the good people at Sidefx for thinking in a procederal way.

another small thing that might seem stupid, is selection of fields. Why not highlight the filed on click? I find that I spend allot of time fixing exploding meshes because I forgot to click–drag to highlight a specific field.
It will save tons of time if a click on a field selected the value by default.
What do you guys think?

Have a look at this softimage video. The tweak tool in Soft is brilliant. It gives you a couple of extra options all in one go. It also works with soft selections, which makes it very powerful.

You can right-click on the tool in the shelf, go to the hotkeys tab, and set it there. That is strange it doesn't show up when searching in the Edit > Hotkeys… dialog.
Thanks goldleaf. Much appreciate your help.

Is there a way to set up a hot key for Edge Loop?
I get that it is just a poly split with Quad Strip enabled, but for some reason I can't find it in the hotkeys editor.

SI user's must be drinking lots of energy drinks to see Houdini as slow
Houdini is tumbling the same as Nuke & Blender on osX IntelHd3000, Amd 7950 and RaedonGT 120. OsX and Linux.
Which software and os & graphics card are you using?
Edit: RMB and drag is quite quick too. Does SI use ‘Mouse acceleration’? Houdini is very quick when you move the wheel quickly and more subtle when slow, at least on OsX
I find the mouse zoom increments slow in Houdini. I know that alt + RMB zooms in quicker, but once you get used to the scroll wheel zoom, it's hard to let go.
I'm sure there must be a way to tell Houdini to increase or decrease the amount of zoom by setting the increments it uses.
I've been playing with Houdini a lot over the last two weeks and love the power that it gives. We can all agree that the workflow, modeling and animation side needs some work, but I'm sure it will change over the next year or two.
All I can say is that it is allot more enjoyable then my trail and error of maya. Man that thing is a bloated old ship.
I am running Win7 on a GeForce GTX 560 Ti…which works well with Houdini

Is there a way to increase the scroll wheel zoom speed in Houdini? Maybe with a environment variable? Shift with scrolling slows it down, how about speeding it up?
I find that it is very slow compared to other 3d applications.

I was looking around in the help file to see how opensubdiv surfaces work in houdini, but could not find much about this?
I tried switching the algorithm in the subdivide SOP but it needs to be cooked first? How does this work? Apparently this was implemented at viewport display level as well.
