Do people generally model in programs like ZBrush and then import to Houdini or do most just model using Houdini's tools?
Yes and No it depends really on what you want to do and how!!!
Organic Modeling => other tools (zbrush, 3D Coat, Cinema 4D …. )
Procedural Modeling => Houdini
You also can do organic Modeling in Houdini but you mostly want then to make it procedural to have like a generator.

you can use the File Sop or under the Menu: File > Import > Geometry / FBX / Alembic build the nodes by this importers

I want to have a small script that checks if the insert file name has the extension in it if not it should add the correct file extension to it
as for test callback script i have made this one and it doesn't work:

if ( ${script_value:e} != “.jsx” ) then
set $script_parm = $script_value + “.jsx”
EDIT: it looks like strcmp should be used but when i insert it still won't work.
the first version i have made a python version in my script(otl /PythonModule) that works but it changes the $HIP to full path so i loss the $HIP what i don't want:

node = ropNode.parm(“save_file”)
path = node.eval() # Eval doesnt come as $HIP

By default P is a hotkey for Parameters window, and I would like to assign it to another key.
But I can't seem to find exactly where I should Shift+Ctrl+Alt click. Any ideas?
Edit > Hotkeys… > Search > Enter Key
When you want to add a new key click with the mouse to the empty field and press what you want. example: Ctrl+Alt+X and it will insert it.

i have made some tests and for learning more VEX. the only problem i have are the edge corners otherwise it should work.
you can check the file the third_method is the last one and the best in my option it just has a small bug you will see it in the box test setup.

There is a structure but it has do be done manually. In H14 you will get a project manager if you can wait the 15.01.15 will be your date. :-)

I meant Rigging not simulation type rigging. Rigging for game assets.
Ahh okay :-)
just as a simple example: make the car model in groups and put the pivot points correctly. Make the rest in the game engine. that would be the simple way.
on 3dbuzz.com there are some general rigging tutorials.

you could make a custom camera with 4 tiles at 1024x1024. or buy a houdini fx there you get unlimited mantra render.
if somebody can affort a fulldome theater they also can pay a fair price for the content!
btw. look at touchdesigner maybe this also can help.

the textport has the command history but i don't know if the python console has the same.

i haven't 3ds max but normally fbx should work.
what you can try is the export with a older fbx version.
just as a example the maya 2014 fbx export is not equal to maya 2013 fbx export. it gives me always at the bones different result.
