not sure if Arnold issue or Houdini but rendering in viewport with rendersettings from stage is much faster than rendering with Husk to disk.
things I tried:
- made viewport resolution same rendersettings res
- render everything with a single process (worse)
- double checked the viewport is reading the rendersettings from stage
- tried flipbooking but it wasnt updating the vdb sequence from disk and I was getting the same frame of the smoke for the whole flipbook duration.

I have a similar problem with husk and Arnold stopping after few random frames while rendering a sequence inside the Houdini GUI, will try your method and report back

This was a bug on our end. I checked in a fix for it yesterday evening, so it should be fixed in today's daily builds.
Sorry to revive this thread but I'm running into this issue on 19.5.303 and cannot upgrade versions as I'm locked into it due to educational setting. Is there any work around to getting it working?

Technical Discussion » FLIP sop multiple collisions

mzigaibyeah performance is horrible with collisions since it does alot of vdb merging under the hood. also it can lock you of out of cooking with a "operation interrupted" message and refuse to recook unless you restart Houdini (not reload the .hip file), this behaviour has been observed on a couple of machines so I am not alone
Continuing from here and using this thread as an addendum for my doubt.
Is that just me or using colliders in general animated or static is much slower on flip SOP than the old DOP setup? Because that is what I am experiencing so far although I love the SOP dynamics nodes and I really wish to have they as my primary setup which I already do with Pyro and RBDs, but for now on H19.5 I am getting some really bad performance issues on this flip SOP compared the the old school DOP setup, it is not on everything like I said I am felling more towards the collision part.
So it is just me?
Any tips?

"Configure Stage" LOP can be used to mute layers and I think it will pass down to Husk.

SOP Create and SOP Import dont work with volumes
Just wanted to clarify here... SOP Create and SOP Import do work with VDB and Houdini native volumes. At least they should. If you have a hip file demonstrating a case where they don't, please post it (either here or send an email to support@sidefx.com).
It's possible that they don't work in the viewport with Arnold, but they should be displaying properly with the Houdini GL and Karma renderers.
sorry for the late reply, this SOP Import, Scene Import and all other methods work for rendering vdb in karma/ openGL, but Arnold (tested late versions of HtoA 6.2) doesnt work and will give you a blank viewport with zero errors.
only working method I know is the "Volumes" LOP to load the .vdb file sequence.

Solaris and Karma » Authoring value clips from bgeo sequences

Here's a simple example file that uses BGEO files directly as value clips. The trick is that the BGEO files need to have a detail attribute added to them instructing the BGEO USD import plugin to generate attribute values at time samples at a particular time.
is this advisable for huge liquid sim caches? I couldnt make it work for deforming caches.

stitch clips for deforming liquid sims generate a topology file that writes a huge .usda file that is not necessary since its a deforming polysoup mesh and not an animated one.
How do you efficiently load a sequence of deforming geo into Solaris without Husk converting them into .usd files in the $TEMP% folder? this slows down the time-to-first-pixel significantly and increases ram usage by alot

This is what Value Clips are for. After writing out your sequence of per-frame USD files, Use a USD Stitch Clips ROP to create a value clip, which you can then reference into your scene.
is there a tutorial on that?

make Karma/ Mantra convert textures to .rat on the fly and use it just like Arnold. I think Arnold is the best in tersm of .tx files generation since I dont need to manually enter ".tx" at the end of every jpg on every single shader.
big hassle for big scenes with alot of megascans assets

Technical Discussion » Karma CPU memory usage & verbosity in Hydra

hi all,
is there a way to know how much memory Karma CPU is using? something like detailed verbosity in Hydra just like in XPU?
I know renderman and Arnold do this stuff easily but what about CPU?
I just want to make a comparison between .rat files and .jpg files for memory and render startup speeds since Karma cant handle ~8 4k megascans assets.
Thanks

will this make the engine automatically choose the .rat file or do I have to manually assign these new textures on the principled shader?
