You can start out by reading Customer Stories at: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=7&Itemid=68 [sidefx.com]
There are several there like Monsters vs. Aliens and possibly more. If you also go to Houdini In Film at: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=44&Itemid=88 [sidefx.com] you will find a list of movies through the years that Houdini was used in. Houdini had a predecessor evolved into Houdini that was called Prisms and was used on such films as Flight of The Navigator and others mentioned in The Magic of Houdini (which is for version 8 but I find is still helpful).
Hope this helps as a starting point.

I just want to say that I am also coming from Blender 2.45-2.49b and am figuring things out: like the rab3d bearing and the Blender: Architecture,Buildings and scenery(Sofa..)…
For the 4 pillars I feel as of know with my knowledge to just use a bridge sop to the primitives(faces) of the pillars that you want connected. That way you can move the pillars around by themselves much easier.
I find that even though using nodes is a little slower in Houdini than the way it is in Blender I feel that with time and tutorials, I am getting a little faster each day.

I am new to Houdini myself(coming from Blender 3D 2.45-2.49b) but I am thinking this way: set up the Mushroom Cloud Blast via Heavy Fireball through the PyroFx toolshelf onto say a sphere and then have a particle system from that sphere emit whatever you need it to be. I am not at my computer with Houdini but that is the basic steps. If I was at my computer I could set-up a basic .hip file to be looked at. The Blast-Cloud itself should first be low-res until it looks satisfiable to your needs and then made hi-res.
For tutorials on the PyroFx tools look on this site.

Also, you can find good tutorials on mr. Piter Quint's vimeo chanell:
http://www.vimeo.com/user2030228 [vimeo.com]
Actually I just found that I missed it when looking to see what he had and I seemed to have missed them when I went through to download.. ops:
Thanks Jeff: what I want to do is: take a grid subdivide like what peter quint has on his for-each tutorial and randomise the primitive motion on the y axis.

I have Apprentice HD 10 on Win 7 64bit and I am wondering if I can have a stereo file used to make the effect that I want? Also am I just limited to .WAV files on Windows?

I can get the Heavy Smoke to show in the viewport but it does not render out through Mantra.

When I say doesn't leak I mean that the liquid/smoke doesn't just fall through: an example is like say I have a glass sphere and I want it filled halfway with water and I then want to animate that sphere and have the water move around.
For the FX Tool Shelf: I can get bubbles and sheeting rain to work but when I say take the default platonic object and use heavy smoke on that toolset I don't see anything; with the Pyro FX and other smoke tools I can see the smoke through the viewport.

Are there any tutorials for the downloaded FX Toolshelf like for the reflective heavy smoke?
Also how do I create liquid from an object like what was shown in the carve tool lesson: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1295&Itemid=132 [sidefx.com]
I want to know how to make it so that the cup/sphere outer object doesn't leak?

They are shipped as locked digital assets. Go to the top node and RMB on the node then choose “Allow Editing of Contents”

You might also want to use the Rainheeting tool on the FX Tool shelf to start with. You can shorten the Rain Length Factor parameter to get a more snow-like look.
Let me know if you can't find the FX tool shelf.
I am wondering is there something similar in Apprentice HD to the Rainheeting tool?

This is a global illumination effect, which means that a surface properties of an object affects surrounding environment. To enable GI in Mantra you need either Global Illumination Light Shader applied on one of your lights or PBR Mantra mode turned on. Additionally, since you expect your surface emits quite amount of energy out of a scene, you should make sure, its colour is enough strong to let us see it. Make it hight above 1.
Thanks SYmek,
I'll try this out when I get home on my computer that has Houdini.

I was just doing some research through the H10 Doc's and I was thinking what if I parent the object say the standard cube to a Light object or vice versa? and maybe using a glow shader node if necessary?

I have just started to learn Houdini Apprentice HD 10 and I am wondering if there is something similar to Meshlights that are in Yafaray renderer for Blender 3D? Would using a Glow Material somehow be it?
To be more specific I am wanting to create an object say a lightbulb(various types), or just having an object glow that shades an area surrounding the glowing volume. Can this be done in 3D or in the Compositor somehow?

I am at work and can only use IE7 and I am getting threads cropped and can't read the whole thing unless I am signed off, and when signed off I don't get the image and file attachements. Is this a problem with IE8 because I am having problems with the site with Firefox and Windows 7 x64 at home?
