Technical Discussion » Auto-save files in a cache node

There is no Advanced Tab in the original File Cache UI, that still sounds like the new SOP. Here is a screenshot. File Mode set to Automatic will automatically write files to disk.

The original File Cache node can do this, very useful if you want to spit out a bunch of files from a for loop. If you have the Asset Definition Toolbar set to be visible in your parameter pane, you can just switch to the older version. The preference can be changed here:
File > Asset Manager > Configuration > Asset Definition Toolbar:
File > Asset Manager > Configuration > Asset Definition Toolbar:

Unfortunately it's not a feature of Karma yet. Hopefully we get absorption, dispersion, and volumetric scattering for refractive materials in Houdini 20.

You can have multiple material assignments in a single Assign Material LOP. If you continue to drag and drop materials onto objects it will append to the existing node.
Technical Discussion » How to completely turn off bezier snapping in Curve2.0?
- Siavash Tehrani

Okay, as far as I can tell...
Draw your curve
Hit F to go into Edit Mode
Select a point to see some tangents
Hit K to toggle Transform Handles
SINGLE CLICK a tangent endpoint. Don't click-drag because that will just axis snap the tangent.
After you single-click and your handle has appeared you should be able to move it without any inadvertent snapping going on.
Yeah it sucks and is horribly error-prone. An RFE is probably in order.

Using the viewport pixel inspector it does seem like values are clamped to 1, regardless of what Color Limit is set to for the Viewport Settings, or which rendersettings prim is being used in the Display Options. Maybe that's to aid the interactive denoiser? When viewport renders are saved to exr they appear to have the full range.

Is a similar construction possible for MtlX materials? for Karma XPU? I can't figure out how to achieve such a result.
For Karma CPU you can use MtlX Thin Surface if you are comfortable building materials using the BSDF nodes. Doesn't seem to work with XPU unfortunately.

Color Limit is probably the culprit like jsmack mentioned. Anytime I've messed with caustics I've needed to increase it. The renders below are with the default value of 10, and then with the Color Limit set to 1000 (both direct and indirect).

Technical Discussion » There was a problem with the Heightfield paint mask
- Siavash Tehrani
- 710 posts

I'm guessing the "mask" heightfield isn't actually there, maybe because it was deleted before the heightfield was cached to disk. First re-create the mask layer before trying to paint it. You can use Heightfield Copy Layer to do that. Make sure to hit Reset Strokes on Heightfield Paint before attempting to paint again.

Definitely install Afterburner if you haven't already. IIRC the GPU fan won't reach its max rpm (~4,000 rpm) without it. I also wonder if your power supply is adequate for a 64 core processor + GPU.
Another thing you could try is alternately disabling your Optix (GPU) and Embree (CPU) devices to see if it's one or the other causing issues. Take a look at the Disabling devices section at the bottom: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/solaris/karma_xpu.html [www.sidefx.com]

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Karma SOP Import - primitive problem

Looks like USD is applying a default "widths" primvar (with a value of 1) to your curve. You can see the undefined widths primvar in the Scene Graph Details pane when you select your curve. One way to get rid of the ribbon is to right click on the primvar in the SGD pane and Edit Property. A value of 0 will make the ribbon not visible, and you can also just "Block" the property.

It's not possible, SideFX has not implemented it. There is an existing RFE (Request for Enhancement) #106266 for this feature. I would urge you to add your voice to it.

The yellow exclamation mark is a warning. You can examine node warnings and error by looking at the node's info window. Bring up the info window by middle-clicking the node or hovering over it and pressing the info button. It's covered in the docs: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/network/nodes.html#info [www.sidefx.com]

I'm seeing the same thing. It works fine when driven by inputs like your constant or a noise, but yeah, it seems like the Mix parameter on its own is borked.
