Is there a way to copy the edge/path or primitive from Illustrator file that's imported into Houdini to be worked as a separate object so I don't need to have the Ai or EPS file associated with anymore? I tried Trace SOP and Extract but it requires the image file or node path info as well.
Since I still can't manage to bring in Ai path to center or the size shows up to be super big and stuff so I would like to make a copy of it and start fresh from it (center and subdivide…etc.).
Or if I am passing the file to another person to continue working on it and this missing file or link won't be an issue.
Is it possible?

Thanks, probbins!
Ya, guess RAM is the way to go first. I just realized that RAM on workstation is different from consumer ones? shock So I will have to look around and hopefully at least another GB will help me throughout tutorials. lol
I usually don't like to open up many things at the same time so, besides webpages or downloads, I have nothing running to against Houdini; however, I have no problem running Maya while having other programs on at the same time.
For the Tweak.mce, is it the power toy one you are talking about? I will have it installed. What or which setting do you want me to take a look?
I have been always wanted to work on Ubuntu but the pity thing is most of my apps are on Windows so I just can't make the switch full time….sigh.
Anyhow, I will try and see how it would work out. Thanks again and have a good holiday.
Sincerely,
david

I am having Houdini 9 frozen from time to time on a used HP XW6200 workstation I got recently. Sometimes even simple task like File->New will freeze it up so I am wondering what should I upgrade to avoid the problem.
Based on info from other threads and my experience on the computer, I don't think that my computer is unable to run Houdini but somehow it just freezes up and would not respond at all or giving me any error message. I have installed the latest driver and reinstalled Houdini couple times as well as the latest daily updated version but none of them seems to fix it. Software like Maya, C4D, After Effects are running fine on the computer. Would reinstall my Windows help?
Eventually, I will surely have both of them upgraded but I can only upgrade at this moment. Since I am learning on Apprentice so I am not really getting anywhere complicated yet so I am wondering if anyone can give me a suggestion based on my spec below
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Intel Dual Xeon
1GB RAM
GeForce 7600
Latest NVIDIA driver and Houdini
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
david

Sorry, got another question right after 2 steps, Edward. ops:
Is there any reason my tab > POP Network doesn't show up?
I create a geometry, renamed it. Press i to go to SOP mode and delete the defult file1 in network pane. But the POP Network doesn't show up on the tab menu list…

Yes, I did Tab->Merge and the cursor became a square outline so I was afraid to go further. Now, you confirmed that's the right way to go so I tried again. I clicked on blank space and a new node came up called merge1 but still getting nothing in the viewer window so I connected both the cap and fins to the merge1 and I got to turn the whole thing into Object view.
Is the connection nodes to the merge1 necessary? Or it should be merged together right after Tab->Merge?
By the way, I am working on the moon plane now.
Sincerely,
david

Dear Edward or anyone:
I got a problem here where I need to make my rocket into Object view.
In order to have the whole rocket visible I have to merge the rocketbody and fin nodes but how do I merge them? I checked around and got to know how to connect between nodes and stuff but it seems not the right way to merge.
Thanks for yoru help.
Sincerely,
david

Hi, Edward:
If that's because of the version difference, then I apologize that I didn't read through the changes. I am working on the tutorial comes with Houdini. The Rocket model in Quickstart Modeling - Part 1:Modeling the Rocket Fuselage - Step4
hdox/houdini/content/base/tutorials/fm_02_guide_quickstart_1002085.xml
About selection, I didn't select anything else so the tube is selected.
(In fact, I don't know how to select in the Viewer pane like in other softwares but the tube node in network is highlighted.) Now, I just tried again and still not sure where to RMB click at to complete. I clicked on the tube eventually and cap node shows up in the Network pane but still not in Viewer pane.
Before RMB to Confirm

After confirm and have values changed

I have problem right after I reshaped my tube and trying cap my rocket… ops:
Don't know why, after I tab->Cap, the blue help text along the bottom of the Houdini window, instead of top, saying Select the faces and/or hulls to cap and right click to complete….and then my problem is I right click on the tube and nothing really happened. Even though a cap icon showed up on the network pane, my tube is still a tube.
This is really embarrassing since it's just the beginning, haha….but really hope anyone can help me out…
Thanks!

Thank you very much, guys!
I have tested all the products myself as well and found out what you guys exactly pointed out. Always using one another so why not keep them all handy right? I am very excited about learning everything of Houdini now.
Best Regards,
david

Hi, Everybody:
I am a Houdini newbie. I have basic knowledge of Maya and just got my computer barely suits the requirement for Houdini, and I am ready to go. 8)
I would like to know which product in the family did you start or should I start.
Are there people who only focus or work on Halo, Select, and Escape?
Or did you all start with Master anyway? Correct me if I am wrong. To make a 3D animation work, modeling is the first thing to start with, right? So Either Escape or Select or even Master is the one I should start with…or it just doesn't matter? Compositing skill is what I am aiming for. Please share with me if you have any suggestion. Thanks!
