As a check, not that I like to suggest it, you can download Maya PLE and try and load the .obj there. If it doesn't work then it suggests your .obj is corrupt.

varomix
Now to your question, of course you can, you can use CHOPS for that, you can control that with your mouse, keyboard, midi keyboard, audio file, there's tons of options you could do it and they don't require scripting, maybe just clever thinking and setup.
As far as I'm aware midi doesn't work anymore. It only allows you to read a file. It doesn't deal with midi devices anymore.

Simplest way to find out is export the obj and load it into Houdini. You'll have your answer in 2 minutes.
Technical Discussion » Wacom and curve editing issue

I don't think it's a bug in either of them to be fair, just an unhappy combination of how they work together.
Houdini expects you to click to select a point before curve editing. It IS possible to do this with the Wacom, it just tends to be very tricky. I think it has some thing to do with the fact that the pen is VERY sensitive to movement and therefore very difficult to do a static selection click on a point. The pen will always be moving, even when you click, just a small amount.
It may be possible to improve this by changing the pen sensitivity, but that will change the whole pen feel.

As a noob you need to know you can do a great many things with Houdini.
It is VERY important to understand that unlike other packages attributes, such as colour, normals, velocity, are just data, just numbers.
Once you understand this you can use that data to do anything. It is just a value to be manipulated.
If you look at the example file you can see how colour is used to create an attribute called “spin” which is used in the copy SOP to rotate the cubes.
You should use the textport and type “help” and “exhelp” to get a list of expression commands in houdini. You can then see how the point() and opinputpath() expressions are used in the attributecreate SOP to find the colour value from the input SOP.
Also please look at the learning materials on-line and included with Apprentice. There is valuable information in there which will be very useful to your learning experience.
Good Luck!

think about getting the magnet to set a colour attribute on your grid object, so as the metaball passes through the grid will set values between 0-1.
This attribute can then be used in the copy SOP as a multiplier to get the cubes spinning.
Eg $CR*360

When you up-res the grid are you entering the values by typing them in the parameter fields, or using the parameter ladder? If you are using the ladder then I suspect it may be an issue with the graphics card/driver.

I have had similar problems with my Wacom. As you say it's the way the tablet is configured. I'd always have my mouse on stand-by or moments like these.

you need to add a facet SOP to your sphere and compute normals. Particles use point Normals.

Under the Nvidia driver is 3D accleration enabled?
And at the risk of sounding obvious, shouldn't it be an AGP card? Perhaps you have some system mismatch going on.

You'll not get Quads out of it. It's doing a bricker thing to it.
So if you have to come through the iosOffset you're going to have problems. Do you need to subdivide? Perhaps you could increase the sampling of the isoOffset.

Technical Discussion » Apprentice Crash in file dialog

I find that stuff like this is sometimes to be an Open GL issue.
To be certain I would see if Houdini crashes when opening up any other file dialogs. Open up a few dialogs, say for a file SOP, shake them around and see if you are getting the same problem.
If not then my guess would be that the dialog is trying to open to a location that doesn't exist and falling over as a result. You could try entering the path to the file directly and then opening it to see if the same happens.
If the issue seems to be persist try downgrading the graphics driver. Sometimes having the latest driver isn't necessarily the best thing.

Typically displacement is done before shading, therefore you need cut/paste your displacement segments from the surface shader and put them into a displacement one.
Any of the displacement stuff that is being used by the surface node should be exported from the displacement node and imported into the surface one using the import displacement variable VOP.

It opens fine.
Try opening the file with Houdini instead of clicking on it and letting the OS open it with whatever default programme it is using.

I had the same problem and found you could reduce this to some degree by scaling up your system, running the surfacer, and then scaling down again.
