It looks like the hserver service is not running. Houdini connects to hserver which in turn connects to the license server to obtain a license. However, there is no output under
'hserver -l' in your diagnostic output, and it sounds like you're getting “Unable to connect to hserver for license acquisition” messages.
Have you tried rebooting your machine? Rebooting should restart the hserver service.

Are there any spaces in the file name or in the path to the file? I'm told Houdini doesn't handle spaces well in the file sop.
If the path seems okay, then I guess Houdini isn't able to read in that obj file. Is it a nurbs model or a polygonal model? Does Wings 3D let you save out IGES files? If so, you may have better luck loading an IGES file into Houdini.

What errors do you get when you don't restart hserver and sesinetd?
(Note that Houdini is only officially supported on Red Hat Linux, but I don't see why licensing wouldn't work differently on SUSE.)

Yes, obj models should be supported to some degree. You can load in the model with a File SOP.

Unfortunately, yes, an ethernet card is needed to run Houdini on Linux. Otherwise, Houdini computes a server code of 00000000. (It may work with this server code – I've never tried.)
Other than the ethernet card, there are two other problems. The first is that the host name is localhost.localdomain, but licenses can't be generated for that host name. You should be able to change the hostname as root with hostname newhostname.
The second problem is that it's trying to use a machine called linux as the license server. After you've changed your host name, start hkey, choose File -> Change License Server…, click “Local Server” and “OK”.
If things still aren't working, please post the diagnostic information again after these changes.

Technical Discussion » H5 on Linux, claims 4.X server on our 5 SGI server

Just a few notes that might explain what happened:
- If the license server (sesinetd) is not running, hkey will incorrectly report the sesinetd version as “4.x or older”, instead of saying it's not running.
- Licenses cannot be created for machines named localhost or localhost.localdomain.
- Houdini Apprentice non-commercial licenses have an IP mask of +.+.+.+. This means that the license server machine must be the same machine as the one running Houdini/mantra. So, although a Linux version of Houdini or mantra is capable of using a separate license server running on an SGI, it's not possible for the SGI license server to serve non-commercial licenses to the Linux machine.
- The -m option to sesinetd specifies an IP mask to say which machines may connect to the license server. The default IP mask is +.+.+.*. If the Linux machine is on a different subnet than the SGI, the Linux machine won't have been able to connect to sesinetd and hkey may have incorrectly reported a 4.x version.

The reauthorization warning is harmless. It's just notifying you that your non-commercial licenses will need to be reactivated soon. They don't need to be reactivated right away, though. Two weeks before non-commercial licenses are about to expire, houdini and mantra will warn you. Once they've expired, you only need to reactivate them once, and they'll be valid for another 30 days.
If you try to activate a license and a non-commercial license already exists for your computer, the same license keys will be returned. So, when you tried to install licenses manually, you were installing the same licenses that were already installed, as the error messages implied.
Removing the licenses file and reinstalling the licenses won't get rid of the messages, because the
licenses you're installing will expire in less than 14 days.
Sorry about the annoying messages.

Along with the IP address strangeness, the server code is empty (00000000). Do you have an ethernet card installed? On Linux, houdini uses the MAC address of the ethernet card to compute the server code.
Also, it looks like houdini is having problems resolving the domain name ‘linux’. I suspect the license server (sesinetd) is running, but it cannot connect to the machine ‘linux’ to find it. What is the output of ping linux
Can I also see the output of hostname and cat /etc/hosts

If installing new drivers doesn't work, you may also need to upgrade libGLU.so.1. Some mesa versions of libGLU have buggy tesselation code. You'll find a copy of a working libGLU.so.1 in the Linux7 directory on the CD that you can copy to /usr/lib.
Also note that HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE is Windows-only.

--Rikki--
when running houdini i get the following displayed in my shell
Application data saved to /tmp/riksruin.ada.hip
Spawn Error: : No such file or directory
Error running xmessage
Argument list:
0: xmessage
1: License Error: Unable to connect to hserver for license acuisition
and when running hkey it tells me that the server location on (hostname) is invalid, i have tried re-installing with several different hostnames still with the same problem
Rikki
This error message is displayed because xmessage isn't installed or isn't in the path. Houdini is just trying to use xmessage to display the “Unable to connect” message, though, so xmessage isn't strictly needed.
The licensing diagnostic information will help me find where the problem is.
