Hi..
You should be able to simply drag and drop your shop into a pallete, do make
sure the palette is in your home folder.
You can bring up the shader palette from the main tools menu or by using alg+g.
Then simply drag and drop you shader.
Hope that helps.

Thanks guys..
You are right…
I seem to learn something everyday.
I seem to be able to build networks almost at will without thinking about it now,
I have even started writing SOPs, building sprite shaders and manipulating
geometry in ways I never thought possible, I never thought I would get this far.
The initial learning curve is astronomical and I was close to
giving up, instead I decided to buy a copy of Hescape.
As for all my gripes, no one ever improved without getting criticism, praise simply
encourages one to continue doing what one is doing, criticism allows for new growth
and development….
SO.. If you really enjoy using Houdini and want it to get better.. Criticise what you feel
should be improved or considered… If the USERS don't who will…

Thank you so much for that Jeff..
I do appologise for my error…
Maybe you can look into finding a manual for me, or directing me towards one..
I think Zubin will soon get sick of my emails asking him what SOPs, CHOPs, etc..
I should actualy have inside of Hescape, as I'm sure he has better sup(p)ort tasks
to do.
I hope I have not offended you and I hope you can understand my point, as I'm sure you
have realised, my typing skills are greatly lacking, especially when typing email addresses…

Hi..
Glad to see someone has responded, unfortunately none of you are from SideFX, which
makes me really wonder what they do for support.
Anyway..
I purchased my copy a few months ago and it included 1 years support, so I don't have
have a problem there, funny, my query is based on license transfer and extension,
if they don't want to respond to these kind of support querries what future do they
have when it comes to customer loyalty..
As for living in the UK, well, a few weeks ago I complained about their link to Techimage,
who they claimed were resellers, I had purchased my copy from Techimage and
they told me they were going to drop Houdini from January, so when I mentioned
this fact in a new topic, a week or so later the link was up…I was also sent an email
from Claire requesting information on what kind of training material I would be
interest me, I responded and never heard from her again, she also indicated
to me in that same personal email that there was going to be a UK SideFX event,
that event never materialised..Well, not in this universe as far I know.
I got the feeling someone wanted that topic to die….and die fast.
Well, life goes on…but not for us in the UK, I would love to continue investing in
SideFX, but if I cannot even contact them how can I honestly do so…
As for becomming a reseller, I would love to do so with a passion, but I get the
feeling Techimage may have suffered the same fate… “NO SUPPORT” or
“TOO MANY BAD USER EXPERIENCES”.
Companies like Alias, Newtek,, etc… have an active and responsive support
service, no matter where in the world you live…
I was even contacted by a senior exec a few years ago after I email support
requesting an update on my new license, that's what I call support.
I wonder what the process is to become a reseller, I wonder if you have to
contact SideFX….
Regards

Hi..
I have sent numerous emails to the above “subject” address, but I have never
received a reply, can someone please tell me if the address is valid or not. I really cannot
believe that the support email address on the site is wrong, I really think SideFX need
to update their site if that is the case, I have gripped about this for too long now, from
invalid resellers to invalid support emails, PLEASE, UPDATE IT. I am based
in the UK and as there is no longer a UK reseller (I wonder why..) I need valid
contact information ie. email addresses, having received no documentation with
my purchase I must relly totally on information posted on the site,
so PLEASE, “Support” here.

Hi..
From SESI's comparison image Houdini Escape has Advenced CHOPs, Master
also has Advanced CHOPs, yet I cannot find the record CHOP. Can someone
please confirm what is Advanced CHOPs in Hescape and Advanced CHOPs in
Hmaster, as my purchase of Hescape did not come with a manual indicating
exactly what I payed for, I don't know what I should have…
I guess Advanced CHOPs does not mean Advanced CHOPs once you buy the
software…
Thanks..

I'm talking about version 7.0.379 on linux, the latest version of hesape/houdini.
The problem has been there since I started using the “online help browser”,
so I simply don't use it, it's a total waste of my time as I end up waiting for it
to load up and navigation is non-functional.
Now I Archlinux, the “online HELP browser” simply brings hescape to a craw,
this is just becoming too much for me to bear… No documentation, not updated
training meterial, no information on particle sop, I'm considering the upgrade offer
from Alias 4.5-6.5. Without any documentation hescape/houdini is a waste of
time for me, I wont sit around anymore and hope I can guess how things work,
I did not pay for that….

Lame is not the word..
When I used the online help, the separator jumps all over the place, making
it very difficult to navigate the system.
Now I simply will not use it, after I installed Archlinux (Brilliant), the online help
simply grinds houdini to a halt, what a joke.. It was bad before..now it's a
waste of time to me… I wish I received a printed manual when I purchased
escape, I hope SideFX is not loosing touch of the real world..
Every couple of days I find myself watching my Softimage|XSI training dvd's
just to see if it can shed some light on some houdini tools I know nothing about,
and it works… I was watching the particles tutorials and started to understand
a little more about how it works in houdini..funny that, I wonder what would
happen if I went back to XSI and used the dvd's to learn the app deep..
Woa…Better not think like that…
I wonder…..

Hi..
I think you might have to create a vex shader for that one.
It sounds hard but building your own shaders is not too bad.
I'm still learning, but what I would say is go over to www.3dbuzz.com
and download the houdini tutorials, the lesson on sprites takes you
through an extensive session of building your own shaders…It's
fantastic, a little heavy, I think I might need to watch it 10 more times..
Have fun, Good luck..

Hi..
I did not mean to imply to that SideFX should offer their full particle system
with Escape, I was making the comparison that Alias and Softimage offer their
full particle system with their lower end application, not a cut down version,
I simply wanted to indicate that the difference between their low end and top end
applications is a far more proportional and honest pricing mechanism.
As for Escape and the Particle Sop, yes, Escape does have the Particle Sop, it is
very powerfull, far more so than SideFX would like to advertise. I have found it
hard to impossible to find any information on its use, but the VTMs by 3DBuzz
show you just have powerfull it is and how the tools within POPs can be built
with a little time and effort. It appears to me that SideFX goes out of their to
discourage the use ot the Particle Sop as a particle solution as all their tutorials
are based on POPs, this lack of knowledge sharing to empower their customers
is a real issue for me. SideFX have numerous trainers in house, I would think
that by now someone has thought about supplying paying customers with the
information they need to get under the hood.
Back to Particles on Softimage, the fact is that, the particle system within
Softimage is actually quite good, it's powerfull enought for everyday use
and its quick to build. Why, because of the documentation they give you.
I know Houdini's particle system is untouchable, even the little publicised
Particle Sops.. But the truth is, as long as SideFX keep the power knowledge
to themself, Softimage, Alias, Newtek and the others will kill them and put
them into a niche market simply because, no one knows how to really use
the tools offered in their lower end solutions. Take a look at 3DWorld magazine
or any other CG Graphics publication, when was the last time you saw a
tutorial for Houdini, my goodness, the last time a looked at a CG software
roundup, I did not even Houdini….
If SideFX stay under the blanket they will be left in bed…
I know, I know…
I'm sure some houdini users like the feeling of using such an exotic package,
but as long as it stays exotic, so will the price and number of users…
Escape is seriouslly cool application and I would not swap it for any other
application, it seems to surpprise me every day, what seems to be a feature
to other applications is simply as tool…GREAT.
The more I learn, the more I want to use it….
So SidefFX need to make sure I keep learning by offering me up to date learning
material, NOT LEGACY MATERIAL…. Shame on them for that…
That is the sign of a lazy company, maybe they could update their website,
an active forum does not constitute as an upto date website….
I just want to know what is they are up to and what my favourite application
will look like and be capable of doing in the the next major release, is that too much to ask ?
Over but not out…

You have hit the nail on the head, SideFX really need to re-evaluate their
production software and effective placement in the market/package.
I own Escape and when I look at what Alias and Softimage are offering
you really wonder how long SideFX will ignore the market trend.
Alias and Softimage offer their full particle system and character animation
tools in their lower end packages and Alias effer Soft and Rigid body
dynamics in Maya Complete. It's only a matter of time before Alias and
Softimage offer a deal that cannot be missed, I hope SideFX is ready to
counter that.
The other suggestion you made about about training DVD/materials is also
correct and well put, most if not all of us who love using Houdinii would
pay good money for training material, the problem now is that Houdini
as a package is getting more and more complicated, if SideFX do not
give users a chance to learn the package within a reasonable time frame,
users will simply not be able to take advantage of its power and simply
migrate to a package that offers better learning material and better
understanding of the package…
As they say, knowledge is power..
Therefore, POWER (Houdini) without knowledge is simply a waste of time…
Enjoy

Hi ALL…
I hope all of you have downloaded the houdini vtms from www.3dbuzz.com,
they are fantastic and really give you a huge leg up and will smooth your learning
curve no end.
I now have all of them, well over 14 hours of video…
If only SideFX would consider creating some new ones which simply give you
the common uses for the tools. That's what you get when you get a copy of
Softimage, plus a book. I really think SideFX needs to have a good look at
the way other vendors try to educate their customers, eg, you always get a manuat..
Even if I went down the road to get a ?’/$ 10 toaster, I'm sure to get a manual,
even if the toaster has only two buttons…
SORRY.. about that.
My local/UK vendor gave up on SideFX and now I'm a little stuck and it's starting
to hurt. That said, Escape is great. Will SideFX ever update their Site ? They still
indicate that Techimage are resellers of the houdini software line when they are not.
SideFX…..WAKE UP and LOOK AROUND. I need to feel a pulse..
Is anybody out there…?
Can anyone hear me…?
I really don't look forward to my license update sometime towards the end of this year,
I did email SideFX about the process, but no one replyed…
Is anyone there…
I don't want to pull out my copy of Foundation and all the Free training DVDs I also
got, but customer support is everything…So what if I could only afford Escape…
I feel better now…
Keep up the great work on the software, SideFX….
I'll never switch as long as I can feel a pulse…..

Hi..
I own a license for Hescape and would like a better understanding of particle rendering.
Hescape does not have Pops, that said it does have a particle Sop.
Unfortunately SideFX does not provide ANY documentation/tutorials/advice
on using the particle Sop. All tutorials I have found refer to using Pops.
I would be gratefull if anyone could direct me in the right direction, I guess a better
understanding of Pops would help me, but I would really like to know what the
Particle Sop is capable of.
I do realise that Houdini is a complex beast and the combination of
of the tools is endless (a good and powerfull feature), for this reason
it would be usefull for SideFX to produce short 1min-2min video tuts
on the basic usage and potential of these endless tools, the help pages
simply state what they do…
The Particle operation creates and controls motion of particles for
particle system simulations.
Parameters:
State
Behavior - Type of operation to perform.
Point Reuse - How to reuse the points from the input geometry.
NOTE:
Please don't sue me for this copy and paste…
No disrespect intended…
Anyway…
Err…
So how do I use it…?
Talk about a turn off and a steep learning curve…..

Houdini Lounge » Manuals (Why did SideFX stop distributing them)

I Just a simple gripe..
Does anyone know why SideFX stoped distributing manuals.
When I purchased a copy of Escape I was not aware that I would
simply hand over my money and be told to download the software…
I told them I allready had an apprentice copy and they said great
were done….
Well it was not like that, my reseller was very good, but till this day
I'm still struggling with my simple project. The fact is I don't really
know which SOPs, CHOPS, etc are not included in Escape,
so I'm forever saying Oh No, why can't I get a Function Chop, etc…
I feel a little frustrated, as a few years ago I got Maya Complete,
and a manual, XSI Foundation and a manual.
Basically put, I don't get along with the new/funky documentation
tool, which always misbehaves in one way or another…
When I look at my Software shelf, I can see Maya and XSI but
the one software I most enjoy using, is simply not there…
Why…
I would love to learn this software inside out…
Even when I'm on the loo…(very important to most if not all users)
or about to go to bed or on the train….
I would also like to show other people the book and raise their
interest and hapiness..
