Pretty much! The more you have the more space you have for larger the screen resolution/frame buffer, textures and geometry it can store/access without going out of core to system ram.
Minimum would be 4GB for anything serious these days especially if you have multi monitor setup or HiDPI screen.

Houdini Lounge » OpenSUSE: Leap vs Tumbleweed vs Argon vs Kryptonite

I really enjoy using Houdini on KDE Neon… but it's an RPM world for vfx.
So I'm looking at OpenSUSE Leap/Tumbleweed/Argon/Kryptonite and trying to figure out the best way to satisfy that KDE craving for freshness.
Any experiences/thoughts regarding those options I'd love to hear.

Sounds like quite the setup. If you don't mind me asking what is the hardware involved?
ps. You'll probably have better luck with Linux as it has better memory management.

A better question would be why wouldn't any recent pascal based nvidia card not work with houdini?
I get it that buying a quadro card means dropping a lot of money and one wants to ensure their investment works. But in that same token the money you are dropping should inspire confidence given the universal industry recommendation and support of nvidia cards especially their professional line. I mean studio wise 90% of the graphics cards being used are nvidia.
I really think the only thing one could comment on would be related to a specific requirement such as opencl performance in relation to data sets involved.

At work we updated from Houdini 16.5.473 to 16.5.496 and I noticed there is a lot of visual random fluctuations on the surface in the rendering of the Curvature VOP now.
Which is ironic in that 16.5.489 talks about fixing visual glitches with the Curvature VOP…
Anyone else notice this?

In maya there is a way to set it so the division leaves the uv's intact and inserts the divisions between the original points…

So out of the myriad subd options in the poly subdive sop there is no way to not affect the original uv vertex positions?

Houdini runs like butter on my Dell 7577 laptop with KDE Neon.
The only issue is when I first boot up and log in there is some visual glitches around the mouse. But if I log out and log back in it runs perfectly.

Thanks for the response.
I'm using it to make curvature maps to bring into Mari.
I found that if the geo isn't modeled for subd I don't get the greatest results. I was hoping to use the rounded edges vop with the curvature vop to bake out nice curvature maps on some of the low res objects we get somtimes.

What makes people decide to use the VEX Builder context?
I have only seen other people use VEX inline… except today and then I questioned my whole reality.

I couldn't find anywhere that officially said what the deal was between Materials vs SHOP's.
Until I stumbled across a what's new page in H16.
“SHOPs are obsolete as of Houdini 16.”
