I tried to use detail to get the iterator number which I have no trouble with, but I can't seem to put those number in a group.

returns the closest point (i@pt_close)
Hi thanks for the tip, I noticed that you pre-defined the pt_close as -1, why is that? According to the doc,&closest_pt returns
-1 if no closest point was found.

Are you talking about directory tree?
just mkdir command you can run in terminal. Something like:
mkdir -p /ProjectName/render/geo/otherstuff/etc/etc/etc/
but I think you still have to open houdini and save your project.
if you want to create project just do:
touch youHoudiniPoroject.hip
good suggestion, guess I have to automate this process with a script

I'm not sure how to correctly set it up.
float surfacedist(<geometry>geometry, string ptgroup, string P_attribute, int search_pt, float max_radius, int &closest_pt, string distance_metric)

I usually open Houdini and set up projects from there, but it would be nicer if I can set up the project from simple command line.

Technical Discussion » how to select particles by ID instead of PT?

I'm trying to select few rogue flip particles to delete them, if I simply tried to delete them by ptnum, they'd respawn the next frame, so I can only delete them by ID, is there a fast way to select particles by id?
Technical Discussion » What exactly does collision separation do on FLIP properties?

tamte
its an override to the voxel size of ‘collision’ grid/field
by default voxel size of all grids created by FLIP Object are ParticleSeparation*GridScale
however sometines you want to have independent control over collision grid if your colliders have more detail, so you can override it using this parameter
Thanks a lot tamte!

As titled, there is also collision extrapolation on the flipsolver -> volume motion node. This one has an effect on the splashes of sim, but not sure about the former.

For all I know Houdini can up to the task in a certain scale. To create a legit looking crash with scientific accuracy, I'd suggest using LS-Dyna, check out the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoRWNNIsKZA [www.youtube.com]
I wish houdini 17.5 could have an improved FEM model for crash sim

Technical Discussion » Does GPU with double precision helps with simulation?

I noticed most consumer GPU barely hit 1 teraflop mark in terms of double precision. In houdini simulation, there are solvers that use double precision, such as flip solver(FP32 is also an option). Would such GPU accelerates computations with openCL? If a computer system not only has one GPU, but it also as an accelerator such as Intel Phi, or Tesla V,etc. Would that be utilized when openCL is turned on in Houdini?

but if you insist using terminal you have to create symlink from /opt/yourhoudinioplace to /usr/bin
Thanks a lot, now I can open houdini by simply typing it in the terminal!

Technical Discussion » How to render out extended flattank?

Hello guys, I'm having trouble rendering out an extended flattank. The first image is the flattank with basic liquid and uniform volume shader; the second one is the extended fluid surface with oceansurface and oceanvolume shader. I'm not sure how to get these two things work together, cause when you render them at the same time, you can clearly see overlapping parts and different colors.

int pc = pcfind(0,'P',@P,ch('maxdist'),ch('maxpt'));
@Cd = float(len(pc))/ch('maxpt');
nice tip, the simplest solution is usually a better one
