Technical Discussion » How to animate Carve SOP in sequence on # of prims?

Thanks. I understand that I can use CHOPs and a Sort SOP but the question remains for me is exactly how the connections and expressions are written to target each individual grouped $PR in the correct sort order. What expression would I write in the Sort SOP to reflect the correct order that I have defined by my ordered groups? (group1-group62 with varying prim numbers individually in each group)

Mestela, the question now remains, how do I sort in a custom way? I posted to a different topic asking how I could sort according to group SOPS?
Let's say all of my prims are individually placed, one each, in a sequential chain of group SOPS numbered group1-group62? The order of the sops is important and the order that I would like. How can I use these groups to create an attribute that can be passed into the ForEach so that the prims disappear or reappear, whichever I choose, according to this custom group attribute?

Thanks for the expression. I will try that as soon as I get a moment. I will also have a look at the tutorial when I get a moment. Glad you took the time to respond. Much appreciated.

Note: The purpose of this request is to use it in a file I had posted and gotten a response to. The solution (somewhat solved) used a ForEach sop and I want that ForEach sop to perform its operation according to the attribute value of the sorted $PR's .

How do I sort according to an ordered set of Group Sops? I have 60 group sops, each with 1 primitive, in a sequence group1, group2, group3 though the Prim number is arbitrary and not in the same order as the numbered groups. I want to sort according to an expression or attribute that takes into account the order and sequence of my group chain of nodes. Thanks in advance.

Maybe I could use blackpixel's $SCALE variable to animate the carve from CHOPs in sequence. I could potentially adjust the individual animation curves to happen at the sequence speed and order I desire.
What do you think?

That's awesome I got two different responses and solutions! Thanks guys. The only problem is that with mestela's solution the foreach seems to start the carve before the first one is finished.
What I am aiming to do is to carve in such a fashion that a complete carve is finished before the next one starts. Sort is cool but I think using an ordered group is where I will try to aim my efforts so that I can make it look like an animation I did before but with a very tedious workflow: I made it look like the outgrowth was happening like the development of a line when you draw the line with a pen or pencil. Each segment starts incrementally when the pen reaches the farthest point, not before (otherwise it would look like you're drawing with multiple fingers).
How can I amend the carve solution (or the primitive solution) so that it happens one primitive at a time in sequence? Thanks in advance.

Hi. I would like the carve sop to animate the “off-to-on” appearance of Nurbs Surfaces. I have created Polys and done some operations to convert them to a series of simple Nurbs surfs.
What is the next step? Use CHOPs? but how to get the sequence applied to each primitive in order (I know one step would be to create an ordered group of prims using Group SOP but beyond that I am lost).

Hi and thanks for responding. I actually read that thread before posting. It appears that in Touch the time slice feature is available most of the time in the Common Tab whereas in Houdini the Time Slice feature is visible but grayed out ALL of the time in EVERY Chop. I have found a new location for it in the Record CHOP though. It is in the first tab for the record input and record output. You can change the option in the drop-down menu to Time Slice or rather Current Time Slice or even to Segment in the output dropdown.

Looks like I didn't have to use the reset pulse. I find the Area CHOP has a bit of a quirk in it, perhaps because I'm not yet fully accustomed to using the math that it outputs but for all intents and purposes this solution is the right one for me. Thanks!

Ah, yes, the Area CHOP. That would work in most cases I think. However I have found that the Area CHOP reduces much of the “noise” that exists in a waveform graph. So if you have lots of joystick motion going on, switching directions, then it might be necessary to try the option you mentioned at the end of your post. I will try them and report back.
Thanks for your post.

Did you ever resolve this? I started to get this same problem about a week ago on H 13.0.521.
It is indeed quite lax of me to not post my results. I had forgotten that I posted this after contacting support about the issue (since nobody in the forums was responding). They suggested downloading a newer build and I think it worked for the most part. So you might try upgrading. If that doesn't work for you I would post a separate question about this to the forum to see if someone might have encountered the same issue with the same version you were using.

Hi. This is a basic question about CHOPs usage rather than a technical discussion topic. I have a joystick and have installed the Joystick CHOP using proto_install. I now find that I have values that mean out at 0.5 and range from 0 to 1. I want to have my joystick, rather than max out at 1 when pushed up or min out at 0 when pushed down… I want it to extend its range until the up position or down position (or left/right) is released. That way I have a greater fine control over the range.
Currently as it stands the responsiveness of the CHOP is so fast that it basically has no lag time to get to 1 or 0 (up or down) (left or right). This potential solution would apply to the buttons too.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

You're absolutely right! I just looked at all the attributes created with the Stroke SOP and it allows for all of the tablet options if I were to use a pressure-sensitive tablet.

Thanks. That info page is very useful IF i knew Python. But I have searched for it and there is plenty of information on how to learn Python so once I have some time I will try to wrangle it.
I am elated that you took the time to respond to my query with something valuable. I thank you for that.

Granted I've never had to do anything very complex in all the years of using Houdini. However I do not know how to use Python in a Houdini workflow. How would I go about doing that with a Python SOP if that's the way to go? Do you have an example file? Or a screenshot? Thanks in advance.
P.S. The reason I think the MOUSE CHOP might be the way to go is for a live interaction type of thing. Also the Mouse CHOP allows one to enable the “use tablet” option for things requiring pressure sensitivity and other parameters that a good tablet can offer.

So you're saying that if I just wanted 2D information to be drawn I could pipe a python SOP directly into a curve SOP and get what I'm looking for with the Mouse CHOP?
Thanks for the info about the Stroke SOP. I also found an OTL called the drawCurve SOP which is a more complex approach to the Stroke SOP and actually has a Stroke SOP in it somewhere in the network.
Cheers.

Hi. I noticed there is a mouse chop which allows for input of XY data while the mouse is active anywhere in the HOUDINI window.
I'm wondering if there is a way to “paint” or draw a series of points? I am missing something about the Trail SOPs inherent functionality and I think it could be used to create what I want.
Can anyone help me out with this?
P.S. I tried using an Add SOP with one point at 0,0,0 and piping that into a Trail SOP but it didn't work as I had expected. There must be a way to paint points into the viewport to create a naturally drawn curve.

Has time slicing in CHOPs become a permanently disabled grey text? I can't seem to get it to work. I see that it is available in Derivative Touch though, but not in every CHOP case.
Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.
