Technical Discussion » Skinned Wave Shape Pasted on a Grid Problem

How about starting from this instead. The dark blue carve sop is your master control for the progression of the wave across the surface. The second carve is there to display the rest of the water surface and delete the surface under the wave. And it's important to have “preserve shape” on in the Skin sop since the wave is not actually attached to the surface.

Although as fas as I know people in smaller shops love all these tiny features in XSI or Max which are absent in Houdini animation pipeline. Layers to name one of them.
cheers,

If the rotations are missing, are they even being read in to houdini. Can you see all the channels you want in the channel viewer for chops?
If they are missing, perhaps they are named incorrectly, or perhaps they are capitalized and houdini isn't seeing them.
As to the mismatch , perhaps it's a scale issue.

Sketchup is a very cool tool and I've used it extensively for quick mockups. However what they do to geometry, in order to make Sketchup cool, is a nightmare. This is a direct result of making the tools function as they do. Pay no attention to what's going on behind the current.

I agree with John, somethings up with the install.
I'm on ubuntu 7.04 and have no problems with installs, although periodically a particular build of houdini simply won't work.
You are using sudo when you run the installer, correct?
Other than that my installs are very simple.
If you have a license server working correctly you could also
just extract the embedded houdini tar file and source and run houdini from there.

Doh! never mind:roll:
Csh wasn't installed.
ubuntu 6.10 had it automatically so I never checked. 7.04 didn't have it.
Morning Ben,
Actually it does matter. Since the callback is set to send to a csh and I'm using bash I get this error.
Spawn Error: : No such file or directory
Error running csh
Argument list:
0: csh
1: -f
2: -c

ben simonsprobbinsHey Pete,
Anyways, attempting the callback using a Button to run a unix command. However the callback is set to use csh commands and I'm using bash (ubuntu)
csh or bash shouldn't matter because either will run “mencoder” okay.

Hey, this is great. Hadn't considered making it a Rop.
I was thinking of it as a Cop node, so to convert and input rather than converting an output.
It didn't work for me though.
Since you have an input I had expected it to pick up the Mantra node that I plugged in, but it didn't seem to.
More importantly, ffmpeg and mencoder use a different variable to designate a frame sequence, so I don't think $F will be recognized.
I couldn't see your python code so don't know how you are calling in ffmpeg.
A general concern and limitation that I have been mulling over is that I don't believe either mencoder or ffmpeg recognize the .pic format. The would really put a big dent in the usefulness of a tool like this.
Still, an interesting exercise to explore just how flexible digital assets can be.
thanks for the contribution.

Thanks Ben,
Good suggestions and I will try them. I had thought about the shell script idea and will probably try it however I wanted to have the functionality embedded in the asset. Can I embed a shell script like you can geometry?
Anyways, GrahamT got excited by the idea and proposed helping me with a python script for this with a follow on task of making a tool shelf asset that includes a bunch of options. So now I have my hooks into him and won't let go, poor boy

Yes, I was considering whether a callback would do.
ICP won't do though since it only converts still images.

I want to create a digital asset that will allow me to convert an image sequence to an .avi movie.
I use Mencoder on the command line for the conversion.
Bringing in the image sequence is easy.
I'd like to attach a button to the Mencoder command, but how do I bring in the command line instructions and then attach the button to it?

Would that be like locking a sop, or writing the geometry out with a rop and reading it back with a file sop?

Ubuntu 6.10
I've notice with some of the recent 8.2 builds, specifically in this case 8.2.59 the
“houdini.install” doesn't seem to be working.
I'm using a bash shell so my command will be “sudo ./houdini.install”, which returns an endless series of “./houdini.install: 765: let: not found”.
I can install the build by hand and it functions just fine.

We thought it important to let our whole community in on this
invitation. Side Effects is in the early stages of a new initiative to
support training institutions and teachers who wish to instruct with
Side Effects applications.
If you are a teacher, training facility administrator, or an experienced
Houdini user who is considering teaching, we'd like to hear from you.
Contact either myself, via email, or Aliza Sorotzkin
(aliza-at-sidefx.com) at the Santa Monica office.
The invitation below is for the Toronto office. We'd like to hold a
similar event at the Santa Monica office. If we can hold it early in
June that would be good, as I'll be at that office then.
"Hello,
Side Effects Software would like to invite you to an informal
gathering of training institutions and teachers. We would like to
show you how we have expanded our support and resources for teachers
and schools offering Houdini training. Side Effects would like to
gather your feedback, and comments on other initiatives that could be
of help in your training.
Please join us for beverages and snacks at our offices at 123 Front
St.W. on May 2, 2007; starting at 6:30 pm.

will keep you informed of the results of the meeting.

Using a colour curve cop and opening the “edit curves” viewport, and displaying from the colour curve, or later.
Editing the colour curves degrades the image, as expected. But the image won't re-cook to its original level.

What do you think about using Houdini as a freelance Effects Animator/TD? Is it something worth considering to distinguish oneself from the hordes of Maya animators out there?
Mats
I have found that Houdini is a superior teaching tool and that is why I have stuck with it over the years. There are two reasons why I say this, first there is an infinitely gradient of complexity that I can use to explain a particular concept and that complexity is very easy to scale up and down.
The other, I regard more important, point has to do with the end results of over 10 years of teaching Houdini. I have found that those students who stick with Houdini have a greater chance of maintaining their own artistic integrity, as nebulous as that may be.
Other software packages generally lead students down very particular paths, cause it's easier, and everyones work winds up looking the same.
I don't regard this as the fault of the student, they are after all ignorant of the real work that is required.
As you've mentioned, there are hordes of Maya users out there. You want a job you need to distinguish yourself from the herd.
Regarding using Houdini as a stand-alone artist. I think Houdini is even more valuable to you than to a large studio.
Technical Discussion » UV sets problem

.obj can carry any number of uv sets, provided they each have a name.
If you MMB on the file sop you brought the model in with, is there a list of the uv groups(sets)?
If not, you may have to return to maya and provide names for the uv groups.
These names will be included in the .obj and then the group names can be used to assign the displacement maps.
