Would it make sense to either collapse this into a float or at least have the y and z components automatically channel referenced to the x component by default.
I don't know that there's been a single time that I've had a different value for each component, and I habitually set up channel references every time I use the node.
Also does anyone know where I can get cheap golf equipment? It's exactly what I hope to find information about on this forum.

well… you could certainly model the nodular building blocks in houdini and even have some sort of pre-assembled random variation that you export from houdini… but Houdini is not a game engine… how you program your game to compile your levels would be up to you…

It would help if you posted a picture
but you could use a point node, and manually set the normal to be a particular uniform direction (1 in y)

Recruiters don't make a habit of keeping secret what they want their employees to be capable of.
If you don't enjoy drawing, don't do it. Scripting/Programming will open doors, but is also not strictly necessary.
Start with some video tutorials, and assign yourself some sort of a project to do that uses the skills you've just learned in whatever tutorial you've watched. You'll need a demo reel to get a job, and people will want to see more than just tutorials on your reel, but when starting out they'll understand if it's mostly just tests. Just work on making those tests look as good as you can.

Thanks Jeff! I bought the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 already and that's good to go. As far as I know the Express edition doesn't work, but maybe I've got that wrong?

Hey there, it's been a looong time since I've setup Cygwin, and I honestly don't remember which libraries I was recommended to be using at the time. Can't seem to find the email where I had received that advice either.
Can anyone recommend which libraries should be installed with Cygwin? I for sure want to be using the hdk along with makefiles but hones not really sure that I have any other use for it aside from launching houdini with a &
Oh, I guess I used to use it for opening / making .tar.gz files as well.

ah, yup, got it working correctly now
I can't really tell if it's more/less/just as efficient during cook time…. so due to the amount of time it takes to set-up, and due to the lack of visual cues as to whether the point is added to the group (no viewport highlighting) It's probably not worth doing it in vops afterall.
But interesting to know that it's possible.

I find that I'm frequently doing work with attributes in vops, and then using these attributes in an if statement in a group sop to put some points into a group.
Would this be more efficient if we could create and edit groups directly in vops? My understanding is that it's slower for Houdini to evaluate an hscript if expression than it would be to do the same thing in vops… so it's definitely low priority RFE, but it might be nice to be able to create/edit groups in vops.

You registered on a Houdini forum and your first post was to resurrect a 2 year old single comment thread about softimage?
There is no emoticon to express my confusion. I need something like an emoticon of an old man walking a circle around a group of people playing hackey sack.

Has the process for adding documentation to an otl changed in H11?
In H10, you used to be able to add text to the “Help” section when creating a .otl, and then when you could click the “?” in the parameter pane, this documentation would load in the help browser.
I just loaded an otl that was created in H10 in H11 that worked fine in H10, but the documentation does not appear. It is definitely included in the .otl, but not visibile in the help browser.
Using H11.0.495

add me to the list of people that can't install Houdini 11.
First: when I attempted to install an apprentice licence during installation it gave me a fatal error.
Then I tried to get a Houdini License.
When I try to enter the server key, I'm getting the following error:
Key 1:
ERROR: Key installation failed for Allegro-VAIO
Please ensure that the server code and signature of the SERVER key for ALLEGRO-VAIO are correct.
