Don't edit the configuration files from the install folders, make copies in your Houdini user prefs and edit those. If you're on Windows, those two files would go under C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\houdini19.0\config\
Make your changes there and Houdini will pick them up.

Solaris and Karma » Karma render region?

I believe it was jsmack that shared a much nicer way of doing render regions than the wonky stage image view. In the stage viewer, switch to the 2D Pan and Zoom view and drag a region with Shift+LMB. Clear regions by clicking Shift+LMB.

You could change your background color to Dark and then use Hidden Line Invisible instead of Ghost. It's also possible to change all the wireframe colors by copying the "3DSceneColors" files from your Houdini install to your local houdini19.0/config preference folder and tweaking them there. These correspond to which background color you're using in the viewport options, so 3DSceneColors.dark is for the Dark background option.

briansI did briefly try with XPU, but ran into some issues. A few of the materials are layered BSDFs which XPU currently doesn't support, and I was getting memory allocation errors, possibly due to displacement. I would like to try again once XPU is out of Alpha and I'll be uploading this project once it's wrapped up if anyone else wants to have a go.Siavash Tehrani
it's Karma CPU.
Cool!
Have you had a chance to try it with KarmaXPU yet?
If so, can you see much difference?
thanks!
iHD3Thank you so much, I'm happy you got a kick out of it! You're absolutely right about the rice, the grains could be more messy and maybe a bit squished from being form into shape.
Wow Siavash, that's really beautiful and such fun to linger over. OK the carton is unfinished as you said (maybe it needs to be more like the egg that contains the MaterialX logo?), and mayyybeee the rice grains are a little too perfectly defined (something I do know from real life) but the whole thing just made me smile. Happy Easter! And I'll definitely be checking out that Chris Rydalch tutorial.

I started this little project to get some more mileage with the MaterialX nodes in Houdini, as well as to try out the Component Builder to create variants in Solaris. Thanks to Chris Rydalch for his excellent tutorial on the Component Builder workflows!
The clamshell container still needs to be finished, but I figured Easter is as good a time as any to post something.

Really surprising that there still isn't an update...
If you don't mind tinkering with some of the config files it's possible to get Deadline and Houdini 19 to play nice:
Modify DeadlineRepository10\plugins\Houdini\Houdini.param
Insert a H19 entry for hython and simtracker after their respective H18.5 entries.
Modify DeadlineRepository10\scripts\Submission\HoudiniSubmission.py
Add an entry for H19.
For workstations, install the Houdini submitter from DeadlineRepository10\submission\Houdini\Installers.
I installed for 'Current User' and from the 'Deadline Repository'.
Choose the python3 version of 18.5...
And point it at the Houdini 19 preferences folder.
After installation you will find deadline.json under houdini19.0\packages and CallDeadlineCommand.py under houdini19.0\python3.7libs.
That's it I believe, I've been able to submit jobs from Houdini as well as from Deadline.

Your F-Stop is too large. At this distance/scene-scale you won't notice any DOF effects at F10, you would have to go much lower.

I need to submit some bug reports because I also find SOPs-inside-LOPs to be very broken from a viewport-interaction standpoint.
Question: Are you using the standard Solaris desktop, or your own custom desktop? From the beginning I've found anything with the viewport in Solaris to be more unreliable with my own custom multi-diplay layout.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Alembic animation import to maya missmatched shader groups

Hi Peter, I would do it something like this:
Give boolean cutter object vertex normals (Normal SOP) so it doesn't mess with the shading during boolean operations.
Keep your existing groups and then use the Boolean SOP to generate additional groups for the cross-section surfaces.
Use Name from Groups (Name SOP) to create an alembic path attribute (name it "path" for simplicity's sake).
Use Attribute String Edit to rename these path attributes to something Maya likes, for example part1 becomes part1/part1Shape.
Export with ROP Alembic Output using the Build Hierarchy From Attribute option.
Hope that helps a bit.

You would use the Configure LOP. Scott ran through an example of adding render and proxy purposes to an asset in the H18 reveal:

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » How to flatten primitives within a group?

You could, however that will leave all your roofs at the same height. Primitive Properties will use each prim's centroid to do the scaling.

One way to do it is to use the Primitive Properties SOP. Set your top prims as the Source Group, enable Do Transformation and then set the Y scale to 0. If you don't already have a group for your top faces you can use the Group SOP to create one (Keep by Normals, Y direction, low Spread Angle).

Houdini Lounge » is it possible to layer or mix shaders in karma XPU ?

stephenvfxjsmackDo we have a work around?
XPU only supports select compatible shaders, layering is not possible.
For example: a matte white bottle with a gold and shiny logo on it.
The mixing can happen before feeding the ubershader inputs.

The image link is broken.
The Curve SOP was updated in Houdini 19 and apparently it now creates multiple points for each click. If you enable point number display you will see overlapping numbers at each point. I assume this is to enable the rounded corner functionality.
To get around this you can append a Convert SOP and set the Level of Detail very low, then pipe that into your resample with Treat Polygons As set to Subdivision Curves.
