(...) it has a good chance of having a native exoside quad-remesher type of auto retopo tool (...)
The list at the end of the video contains "Fast Remesher" tool listed in "Labs" section. Is it the new quad remesher you mentioned, or some other tool?

Unfortunately nothing to do with the quad remesher.
Fast Remesh(er) is a multithreaded tool based on the original Remesh Node, so way much faster than vanilla.
I released it for the Tech Art Challenge and they reworked it for the Labs collection, adding some nice new features also.
cheers

So the million dollar question is what happened to the promised quad remesher?
I think it will be ready for H20

H19.5 is a wonderful release, but i noticed that Sparse Pyro still doesn't support GPU.And all simulations in Houdini still can't use GPU and CPU together,if you run out GPU memory, the simulation won't automaticaly switch to CPU.

Just curious,is this technolgy very complicated?Because the Axiom Solver has achieved that, and it's developed by one man.

I have no mean to offense SideFX team.

I guess it's a sooner-or-later, but I really hope Karma XPU and MaterialX get production-ready in H19.5.

Probably not,maybe two years later.

a.The ugly interface compared to C4D.
b.Houdini is not a general 3d package, especially in product promo area.Using houdini to handle the cad model and build scene is a nightmare.
c.The lacking of modeling toolset.

As i konw,UI/UX update should not influence the software development, the teams are independent.

(Also: can't think of a single reason why anyone would think having a proper autosave that stays on could be a bad thing… )

Can't understand that either,at least they should provide an option to let user decide.

Houdini Lounge » About the scene management, can we have a new solution?

What I mean is for example grouping similar objects, restructuring hierarchies, turning copies into instances to reduce memory footprint, renaming objects from “part_297584_cd_VX-07” to “screw_iron” 1-250 with automatic numbering and so on. So you can quickly find and isolate any piece of geometry you want to work on.
Part of this is being able to see the most important properties of an object at a glance. In max, XSI, C4D and even blender you expand the tree and you can immediately see pointgroups, subsets of components, assigned materials etc. It helps you read a scene quickly before you even start working on it. A large scene does not necessary mean large scale but often one object containing a large number of parts. Being able to manage that in one centralized interface can speed up preparing a large scene significantly.

Exactly! That's a big weak point in houdini!

Can we have a new solution for this?
Solaris/LOPs is targeted to be the new layout and lighting solution, it may need some time to mature and become more user friendly and functional alongside with usd itself, so time will tell, but it's good to start getting familiar with it

I haven't touched the Solaris, but can the traditional workflow will benefit from those usd stuff?

Houdini's node-based nature is great for vfx,but it really sucks on scene/object management, especially painful when you importing complicated models(eg.CAD models or kitbash) .

Blender or C4D's layer-based object system is great for organizing thounds of objects. That's why most of us choose to do the whole shot(eg.scene building and shading)in other DCC,only open houdini for some hard vfx work.

That's really a pity,we should complete a shot/scene in houdini, but it's really painful to do this. Can we have a new solution for this? By the way,C4D R23's node system is closly connected to the original layer system.
