Well, you need to unpack your alembic geo for fracturing first. Convert it to polygons. During that step you can transfer the current path att (if there is any) to the generated geo. But you will probably want to create a new path attribute after you fracture or not?
Check the pack and unpack SOP and definitely the convert SOP.

paulprkYes, Thank you. I think you understood my rather fuzzy question. I was indeed wondering about workflow in essence and I was arriving at the same conclusion. In my specific case I am trying to mix mortar and brick, where the brick will later be replaced by highly detail geo. and the mortar remain the same. So I think I will use a combination of repacking the bricks mix with some of the mortar to make the sim go faster and constraints to make the break realistically.
Hey. Usually after clustering you'd create constraints. For example stronger constraints for objects within the cluster and weaker constraints between the clusters. Otherwise you might end up with concave geometry and bullet will not be happy.
Theoretically you could unpack it and pack it based on the cluster attribute you created. But this depends on what you are trying to achieve I guess.
PS: there are other steps after the destruction that I am considering as well hence my extra care on the packing and repacking…

Ok here is the simplyfied setup..
Is a basic setup of me trying to understand what is actually clustering…
And if the repacking is necessary to use its benefits… Basically clustering then is a naming technique right?
Nico.

Hi everyone!
I have a question about clustering packed objects.
I create a random cluster attribute and name each group of packed objects by their cluster. So each packed object with the same cluster will have the same name (Cluster1, cluster2, etc.)
I thought Bullet will automatically cluster the packed geo by their name but apparently I am wrong it still treats each point (packed geo) individually.
Do I need to re-pack the already packed geo in order for bullet to interpret them as clusters?
Or is any other way to work with clusters after I packed the geo?
Sorry I cannot add a sample file yet… I will try to set up something tomorrow.
Thanks,
Nico.

Are you trying to render on multiple machines or just batch render projects?
If the later. you could create a cmd file on your user folder (if you are working on windows)
with the following lines:
mread Ihoudini/Jobname/hipfile1.hip
render -f 1 100 -V /out/beauty
mread Ihoudini/jobname2/anotherhipfile.hip
render -f 1 200 -V /out/beauty
-f is for frame range
-V is for verbose
And then just execute the cmd file with Houdini Command Line:
hbatch NewBatchFile.cmd
I basically do that all the time at work to leave my machine rendering without having to set up a render farm, once you get used to it is super convenient. You don't even have to open Houdini to re-render stuff.
Hope it helps,
nico.
EDIT: “:”and backslash“/” are appearing as emoji in here, hehehe… be notice.

Hi,
I used to have a bunch of factory default presets in the transform SOP I think, right.
Now I have none. I can only think I delete them by accident in my last install when I cleaned up my documents directory so Houdini rebuild it. Any way to get them back?
Or those presets were never there? or are not there anymore?
Nico.

dansidiThis was so long ago I think I was refering to the marker tab on the display options of the viewport (pressing d on a viewport) the options there were of help to me.Nicolas Heluani
To whom it may help apparently I overlooked that you can effectively override display options for specific elements and selection on a scene under the display option marker tab There you can set display options for Scene Geometry, selected Scene geometry, current model geometry, etc. Is not the same but it works for my objective.
Hi Nic,
Where can I find that display option marker tab thing?
Thanks!

WrenIn my there were 2 issues combined: a redshift conflict and some user preference or something in Documents\houdini16.5 folder. Because after I deleted the folder content and let Houdini rewrite it everything works peachy.
So was this only related to user pref's?

So I was wondering, if I use two different colliders with different resolution grids in a FLIP sim.
Do I break the internet. Ok sorry for the silly joke,is it a more efficient sim or it just recalculate everything to the smallest grid resolution?

Another update!
I tried to revert to my previous know working version and I still got the same issue.
So I deleted all files in my Documents\houdini16.5 folder and tried opening the same file and now even 16.5.473 opens correctly.
There must be some incompatible settings (“custom desktops or shelfs”) or something that was causing the crash!
At least I have Houdini now!!!!

16.5.439
Give me the same error.
For reference here is the Crash log.
Update: 16.5.405 also gives me the same problem and now I cannot access previous versions!!!!!
I am stuck with no Houdini!

I am having trouble with both current builds,From RS and Houdini. I already logged the bug in Houdini.
H 16.5.473 crashes with segmentation error.
12320: Fatal error: Segmentation fault
And it also crashes with RS 2.5.71 enabled.
I will have to revert back.
Running on a Windows 10
Bests,
Nicolas.
Update: Apparently there was some issues within my preference folder Documents/Houdini16.5. Which sfter deleting it and letting houdini recreate it solved the crash. I am now using 16.5.405.

Ah ok. I completely misunderstood you before. But I am still not sure what you want to accomplish in the context of my original post…which is about batch rendering different hip files. If this digress too much from that subject I will recommend you start a new post. Because if I understand correctly what you are trying to do is basically render the same mantra rop multiple times with different obj filters?

Rather than creating flags on rop nodes and having your python plugin check for those flags a better solution could be to create a plugin that write the command file listed above and later an external file that execute houdini command and hbatch that command file. I hope I am making any sense. That way you can just ‘send’ wathever rop you need and execute it later. On a personal note I will say that a plugin like that will be very popular as it is a common workflow for indies to do this.

Hi @ndixon54,
You probably are not getting much help here because your problem could be caused by many different issues on your set up. The best thing would be if you can share a simplified replication of your problem.
According to what you describe I can think of 2 mayor culprits:
1 collision geometry in bullet colliding with each other.
2 rest length of the constraints wrongly imputed.
Bests,
Nico.

Have you tryied adding an output node and exporting the sim? I am a bit confuse that your Dop network did not have any output. Or that there was no file export for your sim in any place? which lead me to guess that you are running this through memory?
