oldteapot7Quite some time, but I used a huge amount of samples, 128-256 with de-noiser should be plenty, not to mention much faster to render! 😄
And how long it took to render on 16 core AMD CPU? Btw iam planing to upgrade my old box to 16 core CPU i hope it likes Houdini and vice versa

oldteapot7Nope, just decompress in the right folders then add the Karma node, and you're set, but I suggest you don't decompress the 4K texture set (63.4 GB zip) if you want to render with XPU, unless you have a video card with 48 GB of VRAM, as the full scene takes around 64GB to render on CPU, the basic scene has 1K textures!
WOW! Cool, thx
If ill import it to Karma XPU i can render it without problems? Or i have to setup materials and shit?
My specs
AMD 5950x 16 cores CPU
128GB DDR4-3200
RTX 3080 12GB
Here is a 4k render I did with the full scene using Karma CPU, since my video card only has 12GB VRAM...

Hello everyone!
Here is the link for the free ALab USD scene from Animal Logic, just in case you never came across it, it is big, but it is a full production scene to test out Houdini, just follow the instructions to decompress, open Houdini, open the Solaris desktop, add a reference node, point it to entry.usda file in the ALab folder, add a Karma node, adjust settings to your liking, then render!

Technical Discussion » Any way to use the GPU to calculate Voxel size for skybox ?

Hello everyone!
I am playing with the awesome new skybox, and I was wondering if there was a way to utilize the GPU to accelerate voxel size calculations, as they take a lot of time when I go from say 5 to 1, at the moment the CPU goes 100%, but the GPU is at 2%?
My specs
AMD 9-5950x (16 cores)
128GB DDR4 @3200
RTX 3080 12GB
Thanks

Linux Mint is the easiest IMHO, that's the one I use, and it looks a lot like Windows, at least 21.2 does, there is a drivers' manager that will install the latest NVidia drivers, so you should be good, Houdini runs/renders faster on Linux, and it is pretty stable!

This weekend, I rendered the Houdini 20 splash at 4K to use as a wallpaper, this scene would make a pretty decent benchmark!

osongHaving done hundreds of tutorials in the last 20+ years, I can attest that a good masterclass takes a lot of work, and yes, it may take weeks, especially if it involves a lot of research and high quality project files!
if a 2 hour masterclass takes weeks to prepare, you should consider living a bit further away from black hole

I just watched the Luchador & Chicken | Rig & Network Walkthrough [www.youtube.com] that was released a few hours ago, and it made sense to me, here is what I got out of it after a first watch...
Import your model in separate parts.
Use KineFX to create a skeleton for your model.
Use KineFX to skin the different parts using the best method to help avoid vertex painting.
Merge your whole model together, then use Apex to create the rig.
No Python programming involved, and you end up with a fully rigged, production ready character with blend shapes and graph, and all procedural to boot.
Did I miss something, because if not, that's pretty straightforward to me, and I am no TD here! 🤔

I feel you on this, Houdini can be quite technical, it took me a couple of trials to wrap my head around it, still not completely there TBH, but I am working on it.
That's the problem with low level applications like Houdini where you have fine control over everything, all that power comes at the price of complexity, my guess is that it's not that easy to overcome the 20+ years when Houdini was mostly aimed at TD's.
But I think that they made serious efforts in the last couple of releases to make it more artists friendly, some of the new tools are rather simple to use IMHO, I think that they are aiming at making Houdini as artist friendly as possible while still maintaining the level of control that makes Houdini such a power house!

LukePI love the fact that SideFX is a no BS, no hype company, they develop the best VFX, and arguably the best CFX DCC out there, and each year they make our jaw drop with their new release, and Houdini 20 sure doesn't disappoint in that regard!
Folks at SideFX are geniuses. I’ve never seen any software pack so many things into one release…

Linux Mint here, dead simple to use, and you can setup your interface pretty much the way you like, XnViewMP is a pretty decent image viewer, it has its own file manager that can generate thumbs of EXR and HDR files.

raincoleAkeytsu does look good, as I recall it is Windows/Mac only, being a Linux users I never tried it, let's hope that other tools like Cascadeur, which I use, will fare better!
Learning from Akeytsu doesn't sound like a bad idea. Akeytsu has fallen flop, but I think its design is good for animators. (I kinda feel it fell not because it's not good, but because there isn't a big market for animator-only tools)
