Well,
last two days I am learning about rendering, and in one moment I started to think how nice would be to have something like -H host1,2,3… option for mantra rendering, but for simulation cooking… so the question is, is it totally impossible or not?

I guess I will have to try drqueue… sunGrid is (un)fortunately non-windows based, and our render farm is windows based because of 3dsmax…
Another question is is there a way to check activity of render farm computers (other then remote desktop connection) when I do mantra -h host1… command?

I read the docs and I just want check if I understood right, The only way to have behavior similar to for eg. backburner in max, is to use alfred (pRman) as a server/manager for distributed renderings? And if it is, is there a plan to incorporate some kind of mantra render manager in future? It could ease a lot of things for small studios that have small render farms.

I'd recommend using obj format for geometry import/export… it is the easiest way I believe…

Hello to all,
I was doing a bit of learning, and I watched 2.takes_rops tutorial movie,
everything went fine until I made a shadow pass take. Every time I try to launch render I get this error:
mantra: Singular matrix detected “/obj/grid_object1”, object ignored
and output is black frame with no shadows in alfa.
I went back'n'forward few times without success.
Things I noticed that are different then in the video are:
In shadow_pass mantra node I have Expression stack error
Same error shows up in grid_object1 node
here's a file:
it is v9.0.803 on winxp

as others already said good knowledge/feeling of motion are necessary. I depends what do you want, but I believe that showing that you feel the rhythm and movement are the best ways to get a place somewhere. And one maybe a bit overlooked aspect is the fact that you should make your showreel looks good. Well designed, with smartly chosen music, nice booklet together with dvd… because all those things can make your work draw attention. This is visual art we do, and presentation must be good looking.

Well if you have time (money) to invest in good training, houdini is the choice. At least I think like that. I stopped working in maya almost completely (in fact I use it because I cannot buy houdini license yet) and I just learn more and more about houdini It is tough, but rewarding. If you already have a maya pipeline… well try to learn apprentice edition first and then show how things can be done in houdini. Success is inevitable I think 8)

1st basic understanding of real camera principles is helpful.
check this for eg. (wikipedia is also a good source)

2nd in rops, when you select out node in the bottom of standard (first) tab you will find depth of field options that you need to turn on. Also you want to play with camera attributes (aperture, focal lenght, f-stop… )

my first thought is NO. mental ray is far more usable for that kind of work. faster, with better pre made shaders…
but as a houdini lover I would also say why not, learn, practice and try… people here managed to make some beautiful renderings with mantra… so it is possible for sure

one happy bump.
I just changed houdini.install and sesinetd.install as suggested, and everything worked as charm… I even think that ati is working better then under the windows :shock:
