Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Particles passing through animated collider

Sometimes it is easier to just give your collider some thickness than trying to solve the math with substeps that will slow down your simulation.

Remember, your particle separation is a divisor against your domain size. Its efficacy is based on the domain it is dividing. Shrink your red domain box to increase your resolution (and physical memory usage) while keeping your particle separation the same.

I don't get any lockup on my system. Houdini completes the render in 49 seconds. You might want to try changing some settings. 1280x549 is kind of weird. Perhaps try 1280x550 or 1280x720, make sure your resolution is evenly divided by two?

Couldn't you convert the pyro VDB to a mesh, use that as your geo light, but not render the geometry?

Just cut and paste any node from a .hipnc file into your project. This will downgrade the license and force the watermark to appear in your render. Otherwise, just parent a grid yo your camera and assign a material to it using a logo from the $HFS/houdini/pic/ folder.

That was it. Thanks, everyone!
I was using ray:hitN instead of mtlxNormal node. I guess hitN is not the same as the geometry normal.

@jsmack I tried the very small range numbers and very large. The greaterif didn't seem to help either.
I just wonder if the ray_import is actually working?
@jamaro Your method certainly works for CPU only render.

Getting close with your suggestion. I see some purple, but I need red on one side and blue on the other.

Indie licenses are not compatible in commercial environments. What you can supply to a commercial vendors using your Indie license is rendered frames and animated geometry. You can rent commercial licenses if your vendor is intent on obtaining the HIP file.
Another option is to just kick out animated VDB sequences and or Alembics and produce a companion render file using Blender, which you can deliver to a studio.

I tried this type of setup, but couldn't get it to work. N.I means reference the ray normal and export it using an integer signature, right?

You'd think the kma_ray_import would offer some type of 0-1 output value you could use to drive the bias on a mtlxMix. Can't figure it out yet. Some way to fetch the sign of the magnitude of ray:direction then remap that into 0-1?

This one conforms a flat logo to a surface before the extrusion process.

That's cool, Alex. I knew about raw strings in python. I didn't realize you could leverage them inside VEX as well.
I believe sprintf() is an implementation of the printf() function found in the C language. There are a lot of additional modifiers you can add to format number and letters inside a string.

Can't you use sprintf() to achieve the formatting you're looking for?
s@result = sprintf('\$createSetResult = \`sets -name "column"\`;');

You might want to post a screenshot of your material graph or post your hip.
Mixing colors should work for XPU, mixing shaders is CPU only, AFAIK.
Don't overlook setting the Signature type on the mxltxMix node. It defaults to Float, you may want Color.
