It did not take long to save up the money but the 7k has to go to video training. It has too. That is a very important to me as to how much i can get

well, it is a quite a lot of money for video tuts…
I think that you can buy all houdini things for several hundreds..
cmivfx's 3DVDs about houdini are $171
the book Magic of houdini is $32
gnomon's 2dvds are around $100

and that is 300$ for everything

then you have great amount of free things:
sidefx tutorials [sidefx.com];
buzz is old but still good;
a lot of material on forums here and on odforce.net;

old school blog [sidefx.com];
www.houdinitools.com…

I forgot something for sure

Also you can take a look on ‘'live’' houdini trainings, since that is great way to learn…

So for houdini you definitely do not need 7k for tutorials.

there is something like that (well exactly like that) in Reflex animation software made by http://www.digitalfish.com/… [digitalfish.com] unfortunately it is used just on calArts for now…
but it sounds like dream-tool for char animation…

this is what I get in the end of my installation. :shock:
I had to reinstall windows, so I suppose I missed to install something, since everything worked fine before. It is win xp sp2, houdini 8.2.66 (although I tried few releases and it is the same)
Any clues?

Adding 8.2.66/bin/gfont.exe

Adding -Sq

Adding -o

well you have the font manager window that has a good concept, at least for me. when you select the font and hit alt+v you can see the font preview in gPlay window.. although it is a bit buggy on my computer, but maybe it is because of known ati and openGL issues.
Still your suggestions are good…

I know one of the Final Render's developers, and he is pretty much an expert in Renderman… so..

anyway, as an Houdini newbee I just want to say that 4 or 5 years ago when I first started up Maya I was copmletely puzzled with everything, and I thought I will never learn it… now I am so far from that point, so when I have that feeling in front of Houdini… :roll: oh I will never make anything.. I just remember the time when maya was “unbeatable”… so just more good video and written material will make Houdini more spreaded in future…. I really believe in that.

Respect

sorry for confusion, I asked about the OGL frame rate display in the viewport,
so, performance monitor does the job…
it is a bit “big” frame rate shower

what puzzles me still is:
if I understood well the values in hz are in fact fps? they are around 52… but in animation options window FPS is 24 and maintain raltime playback is on… but this is like 2-3x faster then realtime???

thanks for help

I am in animatic making phase of work for film I am doing in school, and I was wondering would it be possible somehow to use houdini procedural system for importing sequence of images and easily manipulate with them. By manipulating I consider changing positions an duration… in fact what I do in premiere but just in Houdini, + of course bunch of cool things I can do more by connecting various nodes…
I try with just importing files into compositing part, but I couldn't manage to manipulate with individual images…
I have have a lot of camera moves/combinations ov cuts and traveling, and I thought that it can be much more fun doing that in 3d… something like a classic montage table but in Houdini

Hope this have at least a bit of sense :?

Technical Discussion » 1 min animated film project, guidance needed

Hello to all.
I have to make some very important decisions regarding the technique I will use for 1 min animation I have to make in my school (it is La Poudriere, animation school in France). 25th of January is a deadline for presenting projects for approval, and till then I have to finish/polish my script (the theme, by the way, is the whole world is upside-down), show sketches for characters, props…, and explain the technique I plan to use.
And this is what I was thinking about. Those two links are to illustrate my idea, they are two Aardman commercials for Robinson Milk that were my initial inspiration:
1st [djordje.petrovic.googlepages.com] 3mb, quickTime
2nd [djordje.petrovic.googlepages.com]7mb, quickTime
I contacted Aardman and the director of those commercials Scott Playdell-Pearce to ask if they can help me a bit with my research and the answer I got was very helpful in one way, and very <_< in other. As I thought they used combination of fluids and particles in Maya with a LOT of scripting. Basic work flow was to use rendered frames to drive fluid simulation in 2d fluid container, mix with particles, forces… and with a lot of compositing in the end. I did few tests to see how things will work for me, and first problem I had/and still have is my lack of knowledge of mel…
So, since I learn for some time bit by bit to work in houdini, I thought to ask you people do you have some ideas if this kind of effect would be possible to achieve in houdini, and how…. Because if it is, and if you can help me by guiding me through the process I would prefer spending my brain powers on houdini then on maya scripting…
One of the first problems I stumble upon is efficient way of loading image sequence into the fluid container. The script I found on net (written by Duncan Brinsmead) has some strange behavior of not loading all the images sometimes, and sometimes unloading them when scrubbing the time line… so…
as I said I'd have to re-write parts of it, and in general to mess to much with mel… and I simply don't know how to do it…

These are some tests I made yesterday… nothing special, but for me enough interesting for the beginning. I did a small animation and rendered it in black and white so I can use it as a density map.

I'll stop here with hope that this will be interesting enough for you to participate.

Thanks in advance

Djordje

p.s. I posted the same topic on odForce…

(disclaimer note: I uploaded them to my googlepages just because it could be a bit more time consuming to find them on Aardman site, and since this is purely for educational purpose I hope this won't be a violation of copy rights in any way. However originals can be found here: Aardman Animations [aardman.com] among mr. Scott Playdell-Pearce's works. All credits goes to Aardman, and two links to my googlepages must not be re-posted or used in any way than the one I described in my post.
