does Blender run native on a apple M1? what i know is that cycles has M1 support under development.
cinema4d had a huge rewrite at the core and viewport that has been started years ago.

i am pretty sure sidefx will do a metal based karma render engine, but that that will come when the XPU will be production ready.
currently apple M1 is still new and it just takes time, in one year we will have more information.
if houdini will have native support for M1 that is another question.

Well mantra is End of Life (EOL).
Karma is the way to go but on a osx you only can get cpu rendering. The karma gpu alpha version needs nvidia gpu's to work.
The intel one api could give nativ support to intel gpu and ARM cpu's. But it is not ready what i have read.
At the moment only octane, redshift and cyclesX are using the metal api. More to come.

Whats also a option could be USD export to blender / cycles x / luxcore (if it works).

karma cpu is working but karma xpu is not showing any result (blocked out )

MaterialX is in XML why it is faster i don't know.
What could be is that USD and MaterialX are newer concepts how to handle data and the vex compile was just a speedup of a older data construction (ifd or cross compile in USD).

I was wondering for ages about the mountain sop. I thought, why the heck was it called like that? Why not simply "normaldisplace" or whatever :-D It seemed way too specific.
Mountain sop is one of the oldest sop node's, we talking here +20 years of age. I don't even know if it was also in prism avaibale that would make it even more older. That was a node for creating mountains in that time ;-)
But over all a nice update what SESI have done.

i had to recreate the test setup, didn't know about karma fog but it looks like it doesn't work with XPU.

sorry, but not everyone has the annual amount of money to pay at once even when it's more convenient in the long term, and also to see after one year that you need to have that same bigger amount of money ready if you want to renew your subscription, that's inconvenient for many users.
if I remember correctly there was a monthly subscription price for indie not long ago and I actually came here with the idea of subscribing to it just to find out there is no option to do that anymore, thanks sidefx, you just lost a customer here, bye
If you are a houdini artist you will earn the money in no time. As Andr has said the apprentice version is ideal to learn and build your CG skills.
You always can use blender!

sidefx can't do these task alone there is so many code that is not native.
i am sure there will be sooner or later a statement coming from SESI maybe when H19 is out or H19.5 we just need to wait.

Don't invest time in mantra if you need to it is EOL. Solaris/karma is the way to go and you will get update and speed improvments.
