Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Simple light object instancing

I don't think you can instance lights in Houdini. You can use a Copy sop to create a geometry that you then turn into a single geometry light. You could also write a Python script to manage light deployment in a scene, but it would need to actually create a physical light at every point.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » [Solved] Offset animation Pscale

There is a thread on OdForce [forums.odforce.net] that demonstrates how to start an animation when a particle reaches a certain location. Perhaps the technique could be modified to examine @pscale instead of @P?
So are you animating pscale from 0-1? Do all copies eventually travel through the range of 0-1?

Even if you purchased the same memory, you still have to inspect it with CPU-Z. I did the same thing, I purchased from a vendor named AddOn and out of the four “matched” chips they sent me I got three different speeds that were speced all the same on the label.
With AddOn it was intentional mis-labeling of an inferior product sold as a superior product at a higher price. Most people never inspect their ram chips and yes the ram chips do come up and function at mis-matched speeds. But with Houdini you really need to inspect those values to eliminate that as a possibility.
This is why we need better import inspectors at the borders it really is a free for all in the world market and there are tech rip-offs going on.

It's hard to imagine what your end goal is, but you can always write vex code to drive the index on a Switch node. So inside your solver would be a massive switch network.

Have you tried adding a shop_materialpath to the primitives before they are packed? If you have a matching Mantra material in the shop path then the textures should show up.

It does work that way by default, but in your RED Translate node you have effectively created a pivot offset with the 0.4 value in the X axis field. Set it to 0.0 and it works as expected.

Maybe you have mis-matched memory chips? This did a number on my Houdini experience about a year ago. I kept getting crashes. The thing is, I purchased additional memory to the same spec as my existing memory, I was adding more. However, after inspecting the actual values of my new system memory using CPU-Z [cpuid.com] I discovered that the vendor was actually selling slower memory as if it were faster memory. Check if all your memory chips are running at the same speed.
Eventually I just purchased a matched set of Crucial 32GB memory and my problems went away.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Use OpenCL global switch?
- Enivob

I have noticed this as well. I think OpenCL is only partially implemented. When I took the time to dive into an asset and enable all the OpenCL switches, Houdini crashed. So I would trust that the developers have already been down this path as well and the provided configuration for any given asset is probably optimized for stability and speed.
FLIP work is just slow, there is no way around that AFAIK.
FLIP was the first thing I dived into when learning Houdini and it was torture on a 2.7Ghhz 6 core AMD with only 8GB of ram. A faster computer, and more RAM can help with this. If you have an understanding of overclocking you may want to consider that. Some processes inside Houdini are still single core and having the fastest possible CPU speed can help give a performance boost. But bad overclocking can also introduce system instability so you must walk a fine line there.

There is no full computing on the GPU. When you enable OpenCL you can expect about a 30% increase in speed. At least that is about what I experience.
There are a couple of GPU render systems for Houdini, you have to buy them and own a Houdini Indie license or better. Check out Octane or Redshift.

I don't think $SF exists at the upper level. So you may want to try and add it as a detail attribute from within DOPs network when it does exist. Then fetch that value, via an import, and route it to an upper level user defined parameter that you can copy and use in an expression.
Just guessing though…

Houdini Learning Materials » How creating camera lead to path?

You can assign a camera to follow a path then animate the position channel from 0-1 to make the camera follow the path. However, I find free-form keyframing of the camera much easier and more flexible.

In your cube example you can double your selections by turning off Select Visible Geometry Only (the eye icon). This will cause your selection of faces on one side of the cube to pass through to the other side thus cutting your selection work in half. But that really will only work with your cube example.
Houdini selection is quite robust, if you have not watched the Go Procedural how-to selection video on Vimeo, head over there and check it out.

Try BillowySmoke shader instead. Then rename the temperature field to density, if you don't have a temperature field within your volume. Then you can use the ramp to dial in a color gradient.

Thanks for the link.
So the answer is no, I can't give them the .hiplc file.
I can give the client all the assets that the .hiplc produces, however.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Can I deliver .hiplc files to a client?

Hi All,
I am just looking for some clarification on what I can deliver to a client with my Houdini Indie license. I know I can deliver rendered footage. I also believe I can deliver exported geometry. But can I deliver the final .hiplc file to a client who does not have Houdini? Let's also say this client makes more then $100,000 per year. Does this mean that the client would need to own a full license to legally open up my .hiplc file?
I appreciate any insight on this.
Thanks

The problem was that you edited the object before the group was created. If you apply your edits after the Group node, your secondary reference to the original geometry would still be valid. Try to make your Group selection early on in the chain. Often what is seen in Houdini networks is a NULL is dropped down to indicate a marker where certain geometry can be safely fetched. Then your Object Merge can fetch from that node.
Also to emulate your suggested style you can drop down a Delete node and supply the Group name from your selection. Then you have the option of deleting the selection or the inverse of the selection. This is an easy way to split a single object into two network streams for further processing.

I don't think so, you probably want to use Alembic .abc files instead. Or use .bgeo.sc files. They can hold attributes. It depends upon what target application needs to read the resulting file.

This happens to me as well. It is like my zoom gets to the end of a scale somehow. What was suggested to me and sometimes works is to select the geometry you want to get near to then press SPACE-H then SPACE-G. So the “home” resets the zoom scaling a bit and the “G” gets you closer to the object.
SPACE-H helps reset zooming issues.

It could be that when you are inside the network you have selected a node that is not the final node? So you are only viewing up to that point in the network. When you pop out one level the Output flag is honored and the viewport reveals the final result.
