Sure. I'm usually on the way to the forums so it could be there too as far as I'm concerned. I hit the home page to see if there's some new tutorial or announcement on the way to the forums.
Personally, I'd love to see the subject lines of the last 10 forums posts, or the “hot” ones, there too. For that matter a quick link to odforce would be great too. )
Thanks, Kevin

I thought I saw a thread about a new sidefx.com site. I'd love to see the current production build number on the home page, just to save a couple clicks in and out of the build page. Small, subtle, whatever works.

I was just comparing those two pages as well. I decided the new layout meant I didn't have to scroll down so that was helpful.

I think the new documentation looks nice but is actually a step backward.
Just compare these pages for example
http//www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini14.0/expressions/
http//www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini15.0/expressions/
The H14 page is far more helpful.

Just ran 50 frames though GM, a fairly beefy volume driven by particles into a VDB density then into a pyro solve. GM took 3 hours to render for $25.61 in credits. GM support has been very responsive and set-up is a breeze (helps if you've used Hqueue with Amazon, etc but it is easy either way).
I'll render out the next 50 overnight on my local machine and try a rough comparison.

Tod,
Point your Mantra camera parameter at the camera inside the AgentCam node. So instead of
obj/AgentCam
use
/obj/AgentCam/cams/agentcam_1
the actual camera is buried in the agent layer named AgentCam (as I understand it.

Rohan Dalvi did a nice intro to grains
https//vimeo.com/132847114
Try increasing the number of constraint interactions on your grain solver. Also, don't over crank any of the force weights (stress, clumping, etc) past 1.
To restart the sim, you need to cache and save the sim. Cache is on by default but you'll have to set up saving it out using the Output node. The help files cover this pretty well.
Good luck. Kevin

hmm… yeah, the wording seems to have changed on the london event
“Side Effects Software, in partnership with Escape Studios, owned by Pearson College, invites you join us for the official launch of Houdini 15 on October 5th!”
now it says

I want to know when the download will drop too!
Houdini makes great tools but has never been one to build up the excitement around a launch (except maybe with H13 which was a fun launch). To be fair, with Janet Fraser's retirement probably left them a little shorthanded in the drumbeat dept.

Same situation here. Hoping Apple will get its act together…
“Which leads me to my point, I rather use houdini on my laptop with all the glitches it has right now under OS X while having all these tools around it (specially if I am on a shoot) than going to Linux and having a myriad of holes in my workflow.”

How do you use the total number of primitive groups in a parameter? I have 7 primitive groups created by the Partition SOP and want to use that to drive the number of material created by a Material SOP.
I was thinking it would be a $NUMGRPS or numgroups(“..”) or something similar…
Thanks!

Wondering if anyone else is getting more memory crashes since 0.395? Nothing changed on my machine but the .sim I've before and after the update has been crashing b/c of memory since the new build.

My R2D2 unit with 32GB and dual 700 Firepros runs H fine. No real issues. Also runs several other 3D apps, e.g., Modo, Substance and Vue with no problems. I will probably double down on the memory to 64 GB when I get a chance but it isn't a priority.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Orientation of copies to a wire

I've copied geometry to the points of a wire coming from DOPs. The geometry copies fine but I can't get the geometry to orient itself according to the point normal on the wire points (set to the tangentu).
It seems like a perfect solution for the SOP Solver but I couldn't get that to work. Any advice would be much appreciated. Specifically I don't think I understand what DOPs is doing to the point normals or why I can't reset them to the wire tangent coming from DOPs?
Thanks, Kevin
&- test file attached

This used to drive me nuts (still does sometimes), i.e., what a parameter is expecting, e.g., HSCRIPT, VEX, local, etc. I love the VEX snippets boxes. They want VEX. I wish all the parameters were that clear about what they need.
I also wish there were more clarity in the help files about what each node expects, e.g., this node operates on points, this node expects a volume, etc.
My 2¢ worth, k

The good news is once it's ported to Metal then it'll run on iOS devices 8)
Why make detours? Port it straight to WebGL instead.
With Metal I'll be able to use Houdini on my Apple watch…
