I am using Houdini 15.5 on my MacMINI running El Capitan so I don't think it is OSX related. Your machine seems to be up to spec for video card. The only other thing you might want to try is to run Disk Utility and check your disk for problems. A lockup on save might still be related to a bad sector on the disk.
Can you do a save on the default empty scene?
Maybe try saving to a USB drive just as a test..?
Do you have any strange non-english characters in your system user name?

You can convert the cloud to a VDB then use a file node to import the resulting file. This should help performance and lock in your cloud as a single frame object.

Instead of typing in the Velocity fields use code in the VEX window. Also remember to enable the popvelocity node, in your screen shot you have it turned off.
Adjust multiplier as needed.

Many low-end Macs don't meet the minimum requirements to run Houdini. Can you post your hardware specs? For instance you need a non-intel graphics card with at least 2Gb of vRam to run Houdini.

The $FF variable is not available in the VOPs context. However, it is piped in as a global named Time that you can route directly to flow. Throw in a multiply or divide math node and you can re-construct the typed expression as a node setup.

It also happens on OSX so upgrading to a new OS probably won't fix an application bug.

Glad it works, but I think you are also on to something about the file extension. If you are using Apprentice or Indie it changes the file extensions behind the scenes but does not update the fields that reference those files.

It may be related to your graphics hardware. Go ahead and put your machine specs in your signature.
Also press the D-KEY while your mouse is over the 3D window to bring up the display options. Make sure you have HDR rendering under the Effects tab enabled.

jb123You can create more complex sims on a single machine. With only 32Gb you start to top out and sim time rises dramatically when physical ram is exceeded.
What are the
advantages of having 128 gb of ram over 64 or 32 gb when working in the
Houdini environment?

For best performance write out the current animated character as a .bgeo.sc sequence then bring it back into a new geo object via the file node. Use that new geo as a fluid source for the shelf tools.

If you are just trying to install Apprentice you don't need the License Manager. Choose the other option.
On OSX your user account must be Admin of the system or the installer/licensor can't write to certain places, even though you may have typed in an Administrators password for the installer. This Admin mode seems to be a requirement for first run.
You also must be connected to the internet.
MacBooks with Intel Graphics cards are not supported or often crash. I can run Apprentice on my El Capitan 2012 MacMini but if I invoke any tools that add textures (such as the characters) Houdini will crash.
Check the System Requirements link on the top of the page, under Support, to see if your machine is up to spec.

The @ symbol denotes an attribute added to a context, such as Points, Primitives, Detail (global to the object). When you reference an attribute and it does not exist Houdini creates the attribute for you and sets it to zero.
$ variables are built-in values that you can use.
So you created a new attribute which got set to zero.
Then you referenced a global value via the $.

Activate The Particle Fluids TAB and click the FLIP Tank shelf tool. Read the messages that appear at the bottom of the 3D window they may instruct you to press the ENTER key when your mouse is in the 3D viewport. It takes a short while but Houdini will generate all the nodes you need for a simple fluid simulation.

You also have to configure the second source Volume Path to point to the correct sub node in the referenced object.
