Constant Freeze while playing video

Hey everyone,

Now that I finally have Houdini Apprentice installed on my Debian Etch system I've run into quite alot of unstability. I'm currently working through 3dBuzz's video tutorials and it seems the freeze ups occur whenever there is video playing in another window. I'm currently using the default movie player in Debian. Typically, the movie will continue to play and Houdini will lock up, the viewport freezes, open tab windows freeze, and my mouse freezes on screen. Eventually, the video catches back up but Houdini stays frozen and forces me to quit. If I can get the mouse working to right click, close, the quit window pops up hallow and if moved it creates the ghosting effect. I'm thinking some setting may be incorrect with my graphics card in houdini. So far the longest amount of time before freeze up is around 5 minutes. Any suggestions?

My system:
P4 2.6ghz quad-core
2 GB Ram DDR2 800
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 768?Mb
Debian Etch 32-bit
Houdini 9.5.230

Are you using the Nvidia graphics drivers and do you have the opengl installed and working?

Envy is a good tool to install nVidia/ATI drivers if you haven't tried it yet:
http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html [albertomilone.com]

Note though for Etch, it recommends launching it from the shell:

Hi, yes I have the nvidia drivers open and I believe opengl is installed, working who knows. I would think if opengl was not enabled I wouldn't see anything in the view ports at all.

I tried using envy but it errored out while trying to find nvidia-kernal-common so I went through the Nvidia install instructions and had the program recompile me a new kernal. Everything works now with the exception of Houdini.

If there's an option or a command to make sure OpenGL is enabled please inform me. Thanks.

something is definately not right. I did find the nvidia drivers settings and opengl is enabled and working. I tried increasing the slider to performance to see if that would improve anything. I opened up houdini and moved the viewport in two directions and it froze. Is there a houdini setting I'm missing?

Post your xorg.conf file. If you do have a line like:

Option “RenderAccel ” “On”

then delete it. Also turn of fancy desktop effects (probably disabbled by default in debian)

Hmmm, what did they do to xorg.conf? That looks messy…Is this really the file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf?

That looks like a instruction set for compiling the Xserver rather than the actual .conf file. Definitely though it is not what Nvidia would have generated, if Nvidia had successfully installed, since it would have created the Xorg.conf file for you.
The beginning of that file, what we are expecting to see, is something like this:

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@yellow) Thu Jun 5 09:27:12 UTC 2008

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder26) Thu Feb 14 18:13:41 PST 2008
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a ”real“ xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Identifier ”Default Layout“
Screen 0 ”Screen0“ 0 0
InputDevice ”Generic Keyboard“ ”CoreKeyboard“
InputDevice ”Configured Mouse“ ”CorePointer“
InputDevice ”Synaptics Touchpad“

EndSection

*sigh* what is wrong with configuration files with normal text in it? Damn autoconfiguration tools…doesn't make life any simpler…Paste your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, maybe that one makes sense….

And do update your graphics driver. Use the one provided by Nvidia and not the one from Debian. DebDevs really dislike proprietary drivers so you prolly have to do some tinkering to get it installed.
