Hi !
wanted to try Houdini Apprentice but no luck with install/running.
WinXP SP1,P3/733Mhz/512MbRam/GF2/plenty of HD space
Network (TCP/IP) running flawless
i ‘ve seen the problem in an older thread before,
and there was no solution. I’m a tech-wiz believe me- so please no basic tips about wrong configured services or something -
heres the problem:
During install ( near the end of it, tried standalone/network already ) the 2 houdini services get started
(sesinetd.exe and hserver.exe) sesinetd runs perfect, hserver.exe crashes after about 6 secs. with Div by zero - see crash-dump below)
this behaviour is consistent and i tried to deinstall/reinstall houdini a hundred times - no luck - t.
everytime hserver-service is started (manual or automatic it crashes)
I really can't believe such a basic flaw can slip through the testing-cycle
i mean div-by-zero is the most basic programming error that can happen, even if hserver doesn't like my hardware/software config there seems to be no error-checking in the code ?!??
So - is there a know solution ( an update-patch ) maybe ? or should i drop my interest in houdini, (using Max in my Job) , cause of this ?
And please don't tell me to switch to Linux ;-? it's better i know but this is no option for me ;-)

and after reading my post again - i feel sorry that it sounds
a little aggressive - i wrote it directly after hazzling around with the hserver-service -
so this aggression goes against the technical problems -
not you or anyone from the sidefx/houdini guys ;-)

Which version of Houdini are you running?
Houdini 6.0.286 -
or more exact i tried to run it - but never came to state where hserver.exe kept on living…

Perhaps the problem has been fixed in a later version of Houdini. Could you please try downloading and installing Houdini 6.0.340 from http://www.sidefx.com/dls [sidefx.com] ?

I wish we could reproduce this problem here at Side Effects Software.
Is there any way you can post a stack trace, JoeFrog? That would help us a lot to find and fix the bug.

Okay - here we go again,
This time it's a different WinXP Pro installation,without the tweaks and disabled services
a serious user must perform, to deactivate all the nonsense running on XP by default……
This is pretty plain after setup and without XP SP1 - but not even i did
expect it - shows the same thing.
I repeat my stats on this Test:
Hardware:
……P3/733Mhz, Asus P3B-F, 640MB Ram,
……Asus V7700 GF2 GTS Dlx,
……Drives C,D,E,G,H,K, all NTFS, all at least 1 GB free

……are NOT activated for this network, ( makes no difference - tested !!)
On this system i started the Houdini 6.0.340 setup,
same effect, near the end hserver.exe got launched
and crashed, a second try with manual launch shows the same.
So thats all i can give you - i stop for now.
At the end of the post you find all the drwatson-output from the 2 crashes,
hope it helps you in your debugging (and no sensible information slips through with it ;-)

This time it's a different WinXP Pro installation,without the tweaks and disabled services
a serious user must perform, to deactivate all the nonsense running on XP by default……
This is pretty plain after setup and without XP SP1 - but not even i did
expect it - shows the same thing.
I repeat my stats on this Test:

On this system i started the Houdini 6.0.340 setup,
same effect, near the end hserver.exe got launched
and crashed, a second try with manual launch shows the same.
So thats all i can give you - i stop for now.

Thank you for your help, JoeFrog. We believe the problem has been fixed in version 6.0.353. It should be available on the download server ( http://www.sidefx.com/dls/ [sidefx.com] ) within a week or two.

I have the same problem – I get as far as the splash screen and the program crashes! (I'm a liitle luckier than you - my XP will load in it about every 50 - 100 tries! When it does, I get an error message that it couldn't run the program!)
I guess we'll both have cross our fingers and wait to see if the problem gets solved in the next release….

This is an really old thread and as noted should have been fix back in 6.0. Please post to the Houdini 8 Early access forum.
